Did they ever return? No, they never return. And their fate is still unlearned

To borrow from a Kingston Trio song.

The Kingston Trio came out with a song of a man commuting into Boston, after paying a lower fair, could not cover the higher fare which changed during this commute on the MTA.

Well, one of our congregational friends set off to Atlanta, Georgia, with her daughter to attend a family wedding. They flew out of Spokane this morning, but their flight out of SEATAC was cancelled and they had to take four alternate flights to make it to NYC this evening. They have a flight for Atlanta as we speak.

But it will be anyone's guess how they will be able to return, since by Monday it will likely be worse.

Has anyone else been hearing--or experiencing--something similar?

Gayle King, from CBS News, was to fly to the West Coast today. She said she had three tickets on separate airlines, just in case, which is okay if you have the money or a company travel budget to work from.

And a follow up question: who will be flying for Thanksgiving?
  • I always hated that song. If his wife can give him a sandwich why the hell couldn't she give him a dime?

I think all Charlie needed was a nickel to get off the train.

It’s a playful critique of bureaucracy and fare hikes, suggesting that even love and sandwiches can’t overcome a system that’s rigged against the common person.

The cancellation / delay of flights in America is being covered by the the BBC but a link to an American news source would be helpful @Gramps49

I love the song, and have since childhood, even though like you, I always wondered why Charlie’s wife didn’t stick a nickel in with that sandwich. But then, the song is meant to be absurd, and that’s part of the absurdity.

While the Kingston Trio made the song famous, they didn’t write it. It was written in 1948. Walter A. O’Brien, a Progressive Party candidate for mayor of Boston who couldn’t afford radio ads, hired folksingers Jacqueline Steiner and Bess Lomax Hawes to write it and sing it from a truck as it drove around Boston. (The Kingston Trio changed O’Brien’s name to George, as Walter A. O’Brien had been blacklisted as a Communist, which he denied.) The song is, of course, based on “The Wreck of Old 97”, which in turn is based on “The Ship that Never Returned.”

As an aside, the smart fare card for the now-Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) is called the “CharlieCard,” and bears a picture of Charlie. Having grown up on the Kingston Trio, that really cracked me up when I encountered it in Boston.

Here is a running report from Yahoo News of the airline restrictions. I note there is a report that up to 20% of airline flights may be cancelled during the holidays if the shut down does not end.

I ask again: who is planning on flying in the US during the holidays?

If you put a nickel into the sandwich, he might break his teeth on it.

Not us, and we're not going by train either - they've been booked solid for a long time.

Our commuter plane, a small jet run by Horizon still takes off from Pullman to SEATAC in the morning with a returning flight about 12 hours later. We also have one mid-day flight and one around midnight. No disruptions there either.

But, since the kids live approximately five hours from us, assuming good roads, we often drive. We kind of expect a little heavier cross state traffic if the airlines stay down. Time will tell.

Yeah, it's an indictment of people who don't understand how inflation works. Something that directly addressed stagnant wages would be more effective.
  • And I started out by commenting on the difficulty my friend and her daughter was having flying from Spokane to Atlanta Georgia. Found out I errored on one score. It was three missed flights on Friday. She was to fly back yesterday. Spoke with her husband at church service. He was not sure how she was going to make it home last night.

This morning, our local morning commuter flight to SEATAC was delayed by an hour. Not sure why.

From the sounds of it, while the Senate has voted to end the shutdown, it will still take time for final passage of the necessary bills in both houses, the president's signature, and then the process of getting Air Traffic Controllers back on line for all the travel disruptions to clear.

And this is to say nothing about SNAP recipients getting what's due them--that is a topic for another thread.

And don't forget all the people whose healthcare is about the become unaffordable because "moderate" Democrats surrendered.

Again, could be subject of another thread.
  • Found out my SON is in North Carolina today and is supposed to fly back to SEATAC tomorrow. He is supposed to take over childcare duties this weekend while his wife flys to Kalispel for a long-planned yoga retreat.

Even though Shutdown may end tomorrow, CNN reports it may take months for everything to get back to normal.
  • For a second I thought this might be a thread about deportations.

Talked with the father-in-law of my friend today. She and her daughter had no problem getting back on Sunday. Still have yet to hear about my son.
