Well, I'm off to have a covid test tomorrow. I had a sinus infection over easter, did a sleepover wed/thu and now have a sore throat again. No aches or fever. Its extremely unlikely that I have the virus, as there is almost no community transmission here, but because I work with vulnerable people, better safe than sorry.

    Good luck !

I have a chronic sinus problem that causes post-nasal drip. When it acts up, I get a raspy sensation in the roof of my mouth -- not exactly sore, but noticeable. Lest I be deemed to be offering medical advice on the Ship, I'll PM you re what works for me.
  • I'd never thought of that, but the dentist thing IS very comforting! Not sure I could sleep with it, though.

Before buying a weighted blanket one might want to try sleeping in a very cold room with several blankets and/or quilts on top. When we visited my brother and his wife last year we found that they routinely turned the thermostat down to about 63 F. every night and piled on the covers. We loved it, slept like babies, and woke more refreshed than usual. We reverted to old habits when we got home, though.

It's good for making you feel It's Not That Bad plus nostalgic for that time you were drinking it on that evening in Istria/ Corfu/ Slovenia/ Sicily/ Ahrweiler/ the Douro/ Stellenbosch etc.

The effect is temporary, but can be reinduced.

For me, I think a weighted blanket would have the reverse effect. I'd feel trapped--especially if I got tangled up in it.

As someone who has a similar problem, I’d be quite interested in your solution as well!
  • Results for me on Monday. They stick a long plastic thing right up your nose, and then when it reaches the end, they push it up some more! Painful and disorienting, but only lasts a very short time.
  • Ouch!

Hope the results are OK, IYSWIM...

Me too! I do these lymphatic drainage massage things I found on youtube that help with sinuses, and also the thing where you press your tongue on the roof of your mouth and press between your eyebrows, but if there is another thing that works well, I would love to hear it too.

  • OK, I've PMd you too.

    I've PMd you.

me too, if you didnt' mind?
  • Well, I think I have to put the brakes on it. If people report back saying that it really does work for them, I may reconsider.
  • Glad I got in before the rush  . I’ll let you know if the solution works - as we’re in peak hayfever season I’ll have plenty of cause to try it out...
  • So today my partner received shielding letter from NHS to say that due to her health problems she is particularly vulnerable to covid-19 and must stay at home for 12 weeks from today. I thought the 12 week period started about a month ago...this will take us up to middle of July! According to the letter we also should be practising social distancing at home....it's hard to know how strictly to apply this while keeping your spirits up.
  • I thought it was 12 weeks from the date of the letter - I would check that very carefully if I were you. And as for social distancing - well, that's a decision for you
  • The letter is dated 15th April and says 'at least 12 weeks from today'.
  • Jeepers. I'm sorry - I thought they might all be dated from the announcement of the lockdown. This has certainly happened with other such things that I have seen.
  • I thought they might all be dated from the announcement of the lockdown.
I imagine that, like the lockdown itself, it will be subject to extensions according to when and how quickly the rate of infection & death reduces.

  • The person I know who has had three of the letters was groaning at the thought of 36 weeks shielding.
  • North East QuineNorth East Quine Purgatory Host
My parents have had two shielding letters; the first started the 12 weeks at the beginning of April and the second has re-started it in mid April. So 14 weeks in total.

Would someone explain what the "shielding letters" are all about? And how can a governmental agency order you to practice social distancing in your own home?
  • DoublethinkDoublethink Admin, 8th Day Host

They are advice rather than an order.

They advise people who have been identified as at the most risk of severe complications from covid-19 to take more rigorous measures to isolate from other people.

If you receive one, it advises you not to leave your home for any reason (essentially any reason than to flee immediate harm, like it’s actually on fire). However, councils have access to the lists of people in their area advised to shield, and you can register yourself as identified as vulnerable. This then gives you priority access for deliveries of food and medicine, and potentially access to regular phone calls from volunteers if you want/need that. Carers coming in as part of existing care packages would continue to do so, and would be expected to follow infection control procedures .

(People self-isolating at home because they are symptomatic, regardless of risk category, are advised to try to isolate from others in the household - there are descriptions of how to do this on the government website.)

@Huia, can we borrow your prime minister for a bit? We need her!
  • Well yes, seeing as we don't appear to have one of our own at the moment...

If Ms Ardern is n/a, can we have Frau Merkel on loan?
ION, I dragged myself out of my Pit this morning, and went off to Tesco at about 10am. I was delighted to find NO QUEUE, and obtained everything I wanted, including some RADISHES...

I observed that many of the staff were wearing new T-shirts emblazoned 'We're All In This Together', which, thought I, struck the right note.

The spouse of my alcoholic relative is claiming that they now have over 100 empty bottles in their garage, which won't be collected until All This Is Over.

We have been speculating - if hand gels work against COVID 19 if the alcohol content is high enough, will be being constantly pickled in alcohol protect my relative?

Sadly no. The CDC recommends hand gel be at least 60% ABV. The WHO goes even higher and recommend 70%-80% ABV. Unless your relative drinking straight absinthe or Everclear the concentration isn't high enough. This is actually a fairly serious issue since various health organizations have felt the need to emphatically state that if you try to make hand sanitizer out of ordinary vodka (typically ~40% ABV) it will be ineffective. They wouldn't do that if people weren't trying it.

My window boxes on my balcony usually have soft fruit growing in them. Without access to a garden centre to buy strawberry plants, I found some seeds at the supermarket. I now have carrots and radishes growing. Though, both seem plentiful on the shelves at the moment.
