Haven't been able to figure out what the problam is with Dear Lord & Father...
It's been grumbled about on here a couple of times recently. Puzzled me - I thought it was the modern stuff that gets up peoples noses.

'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' is Unitarian. It makes no mention of Jesus' divinity.
  • Does it rule it out? If so, creepy.

Is it Unitarian? Whittier, who wrote ‘The brewing of Soma’ from which the hymn is taken, was a Quaker. It first appeared as a hymn in Garrett Horder’s Congregational Hymns of 1884. I agree it could be sung without offending Unitarian or Christadelphian sensitivities. But my guess would be that it’s not the only hymn in the book which doesn’t assert the divinity of Jesus.

As a wedding hymn a couple might choose on their wedding day not to sing a hymn whose second line is ‘forgive our foolish ways’.

My son and d-i-l had it at theirs, though they're not in any sense Welsh.

    They're still married.

My son and d-i-l had it at theirs, too, though they are Welsh - I did request it, and it was in honour of the bride's father, who had died very soon before the wedding (we sans it at his funeral, too)

They are still married and expecting a second child

Ken, late of this parish, loathed Dear Lord and Father of Mankind passionately. I wish I could find one of his rants on the subject.
  • TICTH our smoke detectors, which beeped on and off during the night. I turned them off at the mains but they still beeped once or twice. I'll have to try and clean them.

I was so tired that the blackbird only woke me briefly!
  • I wish I could be woken by the lovely song of the blackbird.
As it is, the first sounds I hear in the pre-dawn are the screeching of the herring gulls that colonise the flat roof of the low-rise block of flats next door.
  • ALEXA is misbehaving at the moment. I tell it to play Radio 4. Up comes the - unnecessarily long and wordy intro ending with 'BBC sounds' - then ... nothing. I tell it to tell me the time, or time one minute and about 12 seconds later it starts. I've tried turning it off and on and it might work for a while then stops.

I can manage without. but I've put it on my list of things for the Tech chap to sort out next time he comes.

Whittier was a Quaker, but the New England Quakers at that time tolerated wide-ranging theological views. Unitarianism developed in early nineteenth century New England, and its influence was widespread.

I agree that Christian churches should continue to use it just as I think we should continue to use "It came upon a midnight clear".

Seriously for a second - it could actually be very appropriate if the couple have had an - interesting - past.

TICTH the Royal Mail. They tried - unsuccessfully - to deliver a parcel to me last week (not their fault - I was at work). When I went along to the post office to collect it, I was told that the Post Office and the Royal Mail are two separate entities, and my parcel would be at a "local" delivery office, the whereabouts of which I don't know. However, if I went to their web site I could arrange to have it delivered to my local post office, which is just along the road.

I filled in all the bits and pieces to do that, and lo and behold, when I got home from work today there was another card saying they'd tried to deliver it again to my flat.

I phoned the number on the card, went through all the rigmarole of "press 1 for this, press 2 for that, say your postcode", and now I think they're going to deliver it to my flat on Saturday, but I'll believe it when I see it.

A friend of mine told his bride-to-be that if she wanted "Dear Lord and Father of mankind", he was going to have "Have Courage, My Boy, to Say 'No'"!

  • @SusanDoris our alexa is also being slow to respond generally.
As far as bbc radio listening is concerned, I think you need to add the "BBC sounds" skill, then ask it to "open BBC sounds" before then choosing a station or podcast to listen too

I just say to ours "play Planet Rock" or "play Radio 4"* and it does it.

*Other radio stations do apparently exist

Talking is easier. Especially when my hands are covered with flour.
  • I've got my radios tuned to FM not DAB at the moment because Radio 4 has been unreliable on DAB. I got bored of turning on the radio to get the scrolling window telling me that there was no service, or the service dropping out when I had my hands covered with flour.
  • KarlLBKarlLB Shipmate
Quite. So Planet Rock needs to be streamed from t'internet, as DAB is unreliable and it's not on FM

Thank you for that advice, I will try it today.

  • @SusanDoris - it might not be Alexa, it might well be that you are tuning to Radio 4 on DAB (digital radio) which is being unreliable at the moment. So much so that I've retuned to FM and am ignoring the lesser sound quality as it's better than no sound.

Thank you - I think you could well be right, especially as the radio I have in the lounge is FM and if I go and listen to that, it is, as I found out a while back, ahead of ALEXA by several seconds.

CTH the advert that suddenly boomed out on bbc radio four for a play.

The description was enough for me to have the room swiftly turning.

    Radio was suddenly turned off.

    Along the way broken crockery.

    + an evening of discombobulation.

If I wanted to listen to a play like that I would. No need to advertise it so gratuitously though.

( now wondering if it was all a spoof and actually comedy )

Myself, for sitting here thinking unEasterly thoughts about lying liars attending Eucharist while their victim feels cast out from church. Every time in his life he has felt drawn to Christ, up someone pops who claims to have Christ in their life and then proceeds to behave as if whatever they have is not Jesus in any shape or form. And the same goes for the so-called Holy Spirit who delivers false witness against him. Who is obviously not the Holy Spirit I have encountered.
I try to be universalist. I don't want to exclude anyone from salvation. But...
  • It is hard Penny. I know someone who felt loved by God, only to be judged and rejected by the first church he tried to attend. I am sure Jesus cried. It is hard for me to reject their actions and still try to love such people. I struggle.

FedEx. If they can't deliver by 12, they shouldn't say that's when it wll be delivered by. I am still waiting at 1.15, the plans for the afternoon are almost certainly all to pieces. All I can find online is that it is on the van.

  • All electric power went off for our whole neighborhood this morning for five hours. I called the electric company and they told me that it was a pre-planned outage for repairs on the system. I said if it was preplanned why would they not notify us so we could also preplan to be without power. The answer was they are sure "someone " was notified. Really 50 people are without power but that is alright because someone knew about it? None of my close neighbors were the one privileged person receiving the message. I think they forgot to notify us and that was the quick answer that came off the top of their heads. Either way a screw up. Thank goodness I now have a gas stove.

Non that I know of, and if so I hope they had a backup system, for emergency shutdowns. As many people here are of retirement age I would not be surprised if some have medical issues.

After a death due to a power cut here all companies now regularly send out a questionnaire regarding medical need for power. It shouldn't have needed a person to die for this to happen.
  • TICTTH the far too naive (read: criminally foolish) pastor who placed a newly-released middle-aged male sex offender with an eighty-year-old woman friend of mine in her upstairs apartment. My friend lives alone.

She's all right--if you count frightened, financially victimized (he trashed and nearly burned down the duplex) and unable to attend church (because she fears running into him there) as all right. He's out of the apartment now. But why the fuck did this idiot set both of them up to fail?

And he endangered the ex-con as much as he did my friend. If she had been the sort of person to make false accusations or even exaggerate, God help him with his credibility against an old lady full of rectitude who had generously taken him in because she thought the pastor's request was God's way of giving her a sign.

About the only thing I'd consider placing in an apartment like that would be a fluffy bunny rabbit. Maybe, just maybe, an adorable young married couple with no kids who are attending seminary. Maybe.

But the pastor in question is over six feet tall and 200 pounds, and probably played football in college. No doubt it never entered his mind that this pairing was dangerous for both of them.

    Fuck that.

Even with the best will in the world, some people just. don't .get. it. Not long after I was raped a friendly, well meaning work colleague questioned why I didn't want to visit the street where my rapist lived. I said, "Bill you are 6ft 4 and built like a brick shit house..."

"Oh", he said, looking at me. End of conversation.

Later we talked more meaningfully because he actually was a nice guy and open to learning.
  • @Lamb Chopped Indeed what questioning said. Although my experience with pastors and offenders has me not at all surprised. There was a pastor who wanted me to talk to a judge and get the wife-beater out of jail and back with his family because," He was a good provider and if only she did not provoke him all would be well." His third arrest by the way. Neighbors had called the police the first two times, she called the last time after he broke her arm and blackened both eyes. I do have to wonder what kind of training these pastors are getting? I know not much if any in this area. Wake up seminary there is more to being a pastor out in the real world than being able to quote Bible history and preach a good sermon. Sorry for the rant LC but you hit a sore spot with naive pastoral care and offenders.

"if she did not provoke him"?
If someone used that sort of argument in my presence I might be provoked, and only if very lucky would avoid imprisonment myself. And I'm not 6 ft something and muscular.
Might the pastoral training perhaps have included the idea that women are supposed to be submissive to their husbands? There are, are there not, churches which have that idea?

We (female) admin staff were obliged to take turns staffing the switchboard which lived in a cupboard at the back of reception with only one door. One of our number was abused and threatened by a man coming into the building (the security guard having gone walkabout). The reaction of the office manager as we comforted the shaking woman? 'She must have provoked him'.

I was >this< close to punching his fat red face on the grounds he was provoking me.

It's the time honoured misbelief that if somebody has 'served their punishment' then we should forgive and forget, and that forgiveness implies pretending that something never happened and everything can be normal again in the way that things used to be.

NO forgiveness does not mean that, and we certainly do not say what you did is ok as we forgive you.. what they did may never be ok even with forgiveness.

With forgiveness we have to be aware, that what somebody did will always matter and being sorry does not mean that a person will not do it again,

Forgiveness certainly does not mean putting the offender in a position where they can offend again or putting people at risk
