It doesn't always work. Which is why I don't do it as regularly as I should. Thank you for the reminder.
Meanwhile, the Post Office and its handling of signed for parcels. I had one arrive through the letter box the other week, no bell rung, and it claimed to have been signed for by me on line, by squiggle. So I rang them up to be told it shouldn't have happened. Which I knew, obviously. Then this week, doorbell rang, and I was handed a package. "Isn't that to be signed for?" I asked, as the email about it had said it was needed. "Oh no, that's been dealt with," said the young woman, and sure enough, the tracking site said that squiggle, in my first name, had signed for it. I'm expecting a few more packages, and when it happens again, I shall compose a letter. What is the point of paying through the nose for a service the posties think is OK to bypass?

The idea of Squiggle signing for your parcels has given me a real laugh this morning @Penny S - thank you!

I'm generally grateful if I'm out and my postie signs for me, rather than taking my package back to the depot in the next town.
  • Penny SPenny S Shipmate
But if I'm in, and there is no attempt to contact me... And I'm afraid I don't 100% trust the posties as I used to. They aren't regular. And they put things for next door into my bin cupboard with no card left so I only find them by chance. Things have gone missing. I haven't had a thank you from my usually prompt nephew, though it was signed off by squiggle and the middle of his surname. Puts me in an embarrassing position about asking And they will be all tied up with new baby stuff.

I'm having trouble with deliveries from the post office here, too. I had a package that was to be delivered to me on Monday, but there was no package, and the post office and company I bought from both said delivered.

I sent a 'missing mail' form to the USPS, and called the company that sent my package. USPS has not responded at all, and the company has said they'll make a claim for me after ten days pass.

We used to have a wonderful woman who delivered the mail here. Since she retired, there has been a string of new people delivering mail, but they don't seem to care at all about accuracy.

Somebody received my package. Somebody has not made any attempts to get the package to the rightful owner. Yet. If they do not, ICTH that person.
  • Yep. hate to sound like "in the olden days" here, but our current mailman drives the wrong way down a one-way street routinely (I've nearly hit him several times) and puts half our mail in our neighbors' boxes and vice versa at least once a week. There isn't a chance in hell I'd trust him to sign for a package. It'd probably wind up on the roof, or in Washington DC...
  • Thankfully our present mailman seems very efficient. He goes so far as to walk up the steps and put packages on our porch! Our old mailman at our former address would cast mail here and there in this box or that. Well, it was a good way to meet the neighbors as we were all exchanging mail almost on a weekly basis. I once retrieved a package from blocks away and not even the right number or street name.
  • I'm glad you've got a good one. They are worth their weight in gold.
  • Penny SPenny S Shipmate
The one who delivered here when I came knew where to get the post for the previous occupant, who did not get her mail redirected officially, to he.
  • ArethosemyfeetArethosemyfeet Shipmate, Heaven Host
All our posties are great. They have miraculous powers and can determine almost immediately when someone has moved and where (in the island, at least) and redirect without missing a beat. If you mark post "LOCAL" they'll catch it and stop it having to take a round trip to Glasgow. One Christmas the plane was late with the post so they made deliveries almost up until midnight on Christmas Eve to get things there in time for the 25th. I've not had a "sorry you were out card" from them ever and if you call them to let them know they'll hold post when you're away and deliver it once you're back.

And here also. That's why restrictions on imported food - meat/meat products in particular - are so tight.

TICTH trains that slow down just enough that you miss all the buses that would have got you into town in time for the connection to work.

Ten minutes at one stop and 25 at the other ... grrrrr!

Piglet that sounds like something that takes a particular degree of skill in How to stuff up your passengers' day

TICTH Cellphones. Aroha smashed one and the wee one I've been using has done something really weird. Meanwhile the gold pay-as-you-go that I use in emergencies has run out of minutes.

Luckily I bought another one to become my main phone (replacing both the smashed one and the wee one) today. Tomorrow I'm going to Vodaphone where the Helpful Young Person will do their magic and I will put some money on my gold phone and all shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.

I actually have this fantasy - which may or may not be accurate - that all the Helpful Young People hide out the back, like penguins on an iceshelf trying to decide which one they can push in first. If that one survives they all go in, but if it's eaten, they don't. In the case of the H Y P they are saying - "I dealt with her last time -it's your turn today". or "OMG, that woman should not be let loose with technology - can't we encourage her to use another cellphone provider" or "I just remembered I have an emergency dental appointment at the other end of town in 3 minutes,"

Anyway of your charity please remember the Helpful Young People of the local Vodaphone shop.

Thanks Wesley. Between us we did it! Mostly the Helpful Young Man. If the weather's OK tomorrow I will drop in with a block of Manuka Honey Chocolate for services above and beyond the call of duty. He did reassure me that I wasn't the most difficult customer her had ever had - mainly i think because when more people came into the shop I suggested he serve them while I waited.

I think I'm going to CTH the powers that be at Belfast Cathedral who've just fired their organist on the grounds of "financial restraint" and decided to stop paying their choir.

They've got form in this regard: David was hounded out after 15 years of service when they got a new Dean, and his successor didn't fare too well either.

Why can't clergy understand that good music is one of the things that keep cathedrals going?

If you are patient and courteous then there is no way you are even on the wall of shame. Just being slow only makes you a normal requester of help, however much of a numpty you feel.

Actually their thought might be closer to, "I hope I get Huia, it might take all afternoon, but then I do not need to deal with any whinging or aggro."
  • LKKspouse needs extra prescriptions for pain relief after replacement knee surgery. For some reason they like to prescribe five days supply.
Just before last weekend she contacted the surgeon's office for a further prescription and late Friday was told it had been sent to our pharmacist. On Saturday the pharmacist said it had not been received. A painful weekend and on last Monday the prescription was resent.
Yesterday (Friday) the office was again contacted for another script. We were told it had been sent. Friday afternoon we were told the script had been sent. I arrived at the pharmacy and was told that script could not be opened and had to be resent. Calling home we found the office had closed for the weekend. Why the pharmacy didn't contact the surgeon's office directly for it to be resent, and waited to tell us it had to be resent I don't know!
So it's going to be another weekend of pain and tears!
  • Gee DGee D Shipmate
And just how much did the surgeon charge? Rather more than twopence halfpenny I'll bet.
  • TICTH my computer. I made a mistake and have irretrievably lost most of tomorrow's service, including the sermon. The annoying thing is that I nearly printed out the "hard copy" but decided to put it off till later. Oh well ...

Next door neighbour, with whom I have been on good terms, has not let me know, gace to face or via a note, that she has got scaffolding put up today at her bedroom window, which is inches away from my bedroom window. No lieing in, which is my usual wont, with breakfast in bed. No afternoon nap with a view of the sky. I can pull the curtains across, and will need to in the morning before workmen's hours. I watch the night sky as well.
It won't last long, but seeing it was a bit of a shock.
Thinks back - did I let her know when I had my windows done?
Failed to post this yesterday. They did not turn up early at workman time this morning, but there have been mumblings outside since ten-ish. I feel very sleepy.

Had you updated your TomTom satnav maps?

Is it updatable? My Magellan came with lifetime updates. What they didn't say until I asked why it wouldn't update, was that it was the production lifetime of that particular model that they meant - something like three years. The confounded thing is now all but completely useless in many areas.

Updated, and it knew one currently closed road. Useful information about lifetime traffic. I'm not sure how it applies to either Tomtom or Garmin, but I bought both on that phrase.

Scammers, my husband wasted an hour on the phone to one yesterday, but pulled back before any lasting damage was done. Then another chunk of time to the bank to sort things out. He's far more trusting than I ever am!
  • North East QuineNorth East Quine Purgatory Host
My mother is currently upset as she thinks she fell victim to a scammer. She drove to the bank to cancel her card immediately afterwards, but then she had to cope with being cardless for several days.

The name of the company is genuine, so I don't know whether it was a scammer using their name, or a forceful salesperson . I tried emailing the company to complain, but they have an automated system which required me to fill in a reference number, which I don't have.

So, along with Sarasa, I condemn such calls to hell.
  • People who donate trash they no longer want. I volunteered in a church thrift shop and people would donate bags of dirty worn-out stuff, get a receipt, and disappear quickly. Or worse yet they would leave stuff on the front porch when the shop was closed, such as broken TVs. and we would have to pay to have it hauled away.

I live in a senior mobile home community where they just remodeled our clubhouse, and I volunteered to start a new lending library. I requested donations. Along with some nice books in good used condition, I found a box this morning filled with the following: A German dictionary, a number of children's books, and ten different books on dieting, along with a AAA travel guide from 1984. Perhaps the children's books would be read to visiting grandchildren but the rest I will slowly dispose of over the coming months.

Air New Zealand who have announced they are cancelling flights over the next few months. The reason they have given is lack of staff, yet they are refusing to re-employ people laid off due to the effects of Covid on travel and instead are hinting at employing workers from overseas instead.

The timing is catastrophic for the holiday season and for megoing to see my brothers.
  • Rats. This is the second time this year there has been a sign of a rat in the house. The first time there were 2 one was with children. Thankfully trapped and killed before offspring were produced. Now Molly part terrier found a new visitor on our enclosed porch. I am now having to wire under our mobile home and have new traps installed. So far besides being unhealthy, unwanted roommates, the cost is now a total $1000.00

Rat is dead. Rejoicing in the house. Reverse trap set and wire in place, in case of other would-be visitors. Sad things is I can no longer feed the birds, as bird seed attracts the rats.
  • Yes, we had to stop feeding the birds for the same reason.

We had to take down our bird-feeders in Fredericton one spring because there was some kind of bug that was affecting the birds. We missed them, but the following year we were allowed to put them back up again, and it was lovely when they started to come back! :)

Bears are not generally a problem in the UK, but bird-feeders do attract squirrels.

Ingenious little beggars they are, too, and will stop at almost nothing to raid the feeders...there are videos galore on YouTube showing various efforts (some successful) to thwart their burglarious efforts...
