Mum was discharged from rehab last night and spent her first day in her new home today. I'm heading over on Thurs. to help her with admin.

    Good progress then.

Giving thanks for my wonderful neighbour.

The laptop I use came up with a sign saying I needed to recharge the battery. I couldn't understand why because it's always plugged in. I crawled under the desk and pushed everything in hard (in case it wasn't properly plugged in) but that didn't change anything. I was a bit worried about calling a serviceperson, partly because of money, but also because I had a feeling it might be a simple fix, so I asked if either of her teenagers were about and could check things out for me, thinking that if it was more complex I wouldn't feel such an idiot calling Geeks on Wheels.

Neither of her children were home - but she came over, diagnosed the fault, (I didn't know one plug in a multi board could be faulty while others worked) and took me shopping for a new multi plug board and groceries.

  • They're not hiring my ancient enemy to be my manager (three month hiring freeze) and my dog has a high chance of being cancer-free. Thank you, Lord.
  • Wonderful news, @Lamb Chopped!

    Great News, LC!!!

Great news about the hiring freeze Lamb Chopped. By the time it's over may that woman get a new job in Alaska.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
What has Alaska done to deserve that?
  • Wonderful news LC. Prayers of thanks tonight.
  • Thank you all.
She’s been literally on the other side of the world for 20 years, and i wouldn’t grieve if she returned there.

Good to hear your two pieces of good news @Lamb Chopped . Though not in your league, I was really surprised how upset I felt about an ex-boss who I thought had treated me unfairly when I saw her at a conference years later. It was definitely a case of forgotten but not forgiven.

Despite the horrible events of the journey home today (see prayer thread for some details) I wanted to give thanks for a week's holiday in Spain for Little Beaky and family. Several people told them that they should take the little brothers away and leave him with carers as the logistics were so tricky and also " he doesn't really know what's going on so why bother".
He proved everyone wrong. He can now communicate using his eyes to answer yes and no and has had a week of fun in the sun making choices about activities and loving every minute of it all. He has stayed well throughout too. The whole family had the best time and apart from the monumental mess ups by BA today, the week has been glorious, unimaginable a couple of years ago 😍
  • With me it's almost the opposite--I forgive you, but stay the hell away from me, you're one of the major reasons I have PTSD and I can't bear seeing your face. Go and get a 100,000$ job for all I care, become a movie star, whatever--just not HERE.
  • Wonderful stuff MrsBeaky. As a disability worker I hear that all the time, and from people who should know better.

I give thanks for your family's resiliance and advocacy. I hope your daughter especially has plenty of supports and time for herself.

I would be very happy if NZ adopted the same legislation, but given the next government (election later this year ) will most likely be a swing to the right and MPs who don't seem to care much about vulnerable people  I don't think it's likely.
  • I’m back from a week away with my eldest daughter, her husband and son. Her daughter, 16, was at home by herself all week as she is working in her first job. She a few wobbles, but coped alone well.

What an amazing day. I was wandering through a small mall and found some end of line shoes at half price and I had the money to pay for them on the spot. Then I decided I would stop at the Supermarket to buy some eggs for tea, but changed my mind when I thought I'd lost my tablet.

I emptied out my bag when I got home and my tablet was hiding at the bottom. Also my neighbour who keeps hens had left eggs on my doorstep, so I didn't miss out on them either.

My Guardian Angel deserves a payrise,

I thought you were going to say that the phone had somehow got into one of the shoes! But a good day for you overall.

Not such a good day here. There's a total fire ban in place for much of NSW, with the weather bureau describing the conditions on the Far South Coast as catastrophic. And its only the middle of September! Having to cancel the planned bbq dinner this evening is a minor effect.
  • HuiaHuia Shipmate
I think we may need to bring in some fire bans here too. The strong winds we have been experiencing have dried out grasslands. and while the Port Hills are currently covered in green grass, due to heavy rainfall, it doesn't take much for them to brown off.
  • I can't remember - do you get southerlies? If the Port Hills dried out as you fear, a fire there and a southerly to get it going would be unpleasant. Thinking back, was there a Shipmate who lived there?
  • My beloved mother-in-law died peacefully at the end of June, but it took until last week to gather the family for her (Presbyterian) memorial service in New York State on Saturday, and then the (Lutheran) burial of the ashes in Nebraska on Tuesday, the day after her 95th birthday. The cemetery is one of the most beautiful places I know, just outside her home village, surrounded by the cornfields worked by the families (mostly Danish) that have always worked them, and full of lively memories. It was a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze blowing over the fields - one of those days that we'll remember all our lives.

That sounds lovely, ST. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
  • My MIL is in her own home and starting to ease back into work. She no longer has a gastronomy tube, and is eating solid food. By my calculations we are in stage three of her recovery and return to wholeness. Thankyou all for your prayers.
  • Hurray!

Now very happily slumped after an eventful 48 hours which included playing all the hymns in my church's hymnbook, all 840+ of them. However, I belatedly realised I had no recollection of two from the Christmas section, which was amended this morning after church. Not going to say I've played them all when I haven't - no one was following along at that point to tell me at the time.

Along with a job offer to be confirmed and a new contract to sign tomorrow (though not sure when I switch departments yet) I am a very contented and thankful Japes. Also, a very sleepy one who is about to have a nap. 12 hours on the organ bench with 5 minute breaks is somewhat more than I am accustomed to and my legs/buttocks are protesting slightly at the moment.
