End of life

I don't know whether this belongs here and I'm not after a Purgatorial discussion but simply want to share a few thoughts and request prayer.

I'm currently caring for my late wife's mother along with the Gamaliettes and professional carers as she nears the end of her life.

It's hard work but very moving and rewarding as she is still able to respond to us and to the Christmas carols and choral music I play for her on CD. I even sing some and she likes that too.

Yes, there are the 'personal' bits and the tiredness, the roller coaster of emotions until a care plan emerged.

There is a calmness and serenity about my mother in law that I pray continues to the end. At times she's been positively radiant with joy as she listens to a service on the radio or to traditional carols. There's more there than simple familiarity with melodies and words.

I don't want to over-egg this but there have been times when she's reached out as if to embrace someone unseen or lifted or clasped her hands as if in prayer or praise.

Of your mercy pray for the soul of my mother in law as she passes the threshold between this world and the life of the age to come.
