I had my cataract surgeries at 58. Best thing that ever happened to my vision.

My cataract surgeries were done in 2023, and I'm still thrilled to be able to see when I get up and during my showers! Not buying any complicated eyeglasses will save me a lot of money! Plus, I can see the road signs when I drive at night!

    It's all wonderful!

Wow. It's been this way so long I can hardly imagine having clear, unhaloed sight. I wonder if I'll be able to distinguish between darker colours in artificial light? It's led to some interesting choices of clothes some winter mornings.
  • Hmm. I keep getting reminders from Specsavers to visit them again - I went a couple of years ago, when floaters first appeared, but was reassured that there was very little wrong with my vision, given my age (I do wish they wouldn't say that).

Still, I think I'll go for another check-up in the Spring...

Another NYR, I suppose, is to try to walk around outside every day (unless it's really pishing down with rain), rather than every other day, when Shopp Ing might be required.

That's a very good idea, BF (the outdoor walking, I mean). My little 5-10 minute amble to the office and back (plus a quick flick round Tessie's every couple of days) may not be much, but I think I'd probably seize up if I didn't do it for a few days!

I really need to get back into it. But what with waiting for deliveries and appointments I haven't had the chance for three days, and am feeling it - was awake for hours last night through lack of exercise. I don't believe in making formal resolutions but I do need to get out more on a regular basis like I used to.
  • My daily walk is not likely to be more than a slow 100-yard Totter to the Car (in which, of course, I can sit me down for a Rest), but, in Sun-Shiny weather, I might see if I can get as far as the Office - another 100 yards! - in which, of course, I could also sit me down to recover...

Noticing a resurgence in the nighttime Achey Legs I've reinstated the morning exercises. The most important are probably the stand from a sitting position without using hands (ideally 30 repetitions but at the moment I can manage 15) and stand on one leg and raise the other to the side (+ankle weights).
  • HuiaHuia Shipmate
I just did 30 standing from sitting without using hands and its more challenging than I thought it would be, so I'm adding to my list.

Just before Christmas I had a pain in the muscles in my backside - then I went out collecting pine cones to give to the family over the road as they use a wood burning heat source. Instant cure!

I hate exercising, but when I'm doing something useful at the same time it isn't as boring.

Now I'm waiting for some rain because the area is very dry and sparks from a chainsaw could cause a fire.

We have more than enough water here @huia I’d gladly send you some! The standing from sitting exercise sounds useful, think I’ll give it a go. I quite like exercising when I actually do it, it’s the getting started that’s the problem!
  • HuiaHuia Shipmate
Thanks for your kind offer Sarasa. We are expecting rain in in about 10 days time, but also temperatures around 32C and a hot wind that will quickly dry it up. I hate hot winds, winds are meant to be cold, so you can whinge about them.

When I was getting Aroha's food out of the bathroom cupboard tonight I found a laminated list headed 50 Reasons to Exercise that I must have been given at some time when I was more energetic. I Googled the title and it popped up, though attributed to 3 different sources. I'm going to put it up somewhere I can see it with a vague hope I might become inspired. I'm also going to ask a friend with a compressor to blow up the large exercise ball I have. Balancing on that while I'm on the computer will mean exercising while I read the Ship, how's that for multi-tasking? Is there such a thing as lazy exercising?

Also I'm going to get a quote for getting my bike fixed up ready for cooler weather in autumn . The gears need checking, which could be expensive. I'm the slowest thing on Christchurch bike paths but a new one that goes along the coast has just been finished and it's perfect for those who hate dodging cars.
  • Well, I duly started off my NYR about exercise today, by walking to the car and back.

I improved the Shining Hour by tidying the interior of the car, and using my new Tyre Inflator to pump up a tyre which has an annoying slow leak.
    :innocent:

Fresh Air was inhaled by me, too, as the wind has turned north-easterly, which for us is the Cold One...
  • HuiaHuia Shipmate
The north easterly is our coldest wind too BF, called "the beasterly easterly" by some of my older relations for the cold blasts in winter, but in summer I think it makes the hottest days more bearable. The north wester is the warm wind, like the Mistral in France I'm told.

Coming from Wellington to Christchurch the thought of a warm wind seemed like a contradiction in terms, and after 27 years here it still surprises me at times.

You either have that mindset or you don't.

I have two friends who are fitness instructors who frequently advertise classes and go on long walking trips at weekends. I can think of few things less interesting than trudging through the muddy countryside in a large group at someone else's pace, without time to stop and stare and wander off the assigned route, take photos, etc, go home when you feel you've had enough. Except possibly running, when you're moving too quickly to be able to stop and enjoy the scenery and get mental refreshment out of it.

But it seems popular enough to clearly be something that many people enjoy so each to their own.
  • My daughter-in-law posted this. I love it and am going to try and do it.

I've signed up for a basic Tai Chi and body alignment course because it's been advertised as improving balance and helping prevent falls and I've noticed my balance isn't as good as it used to be.
  • I'm afraid my NYR of taking a daily walk at least as far as the car has failed on at least two occasions on account of (a) too much water, in the form of an abnormally high tide, or (b) horrid Patches of Treachery (aka ice and/or snow - walking on which is not a good idea if one is reliant on two crutches...).

Better weather will come, however, and I'll do my best to take the daily totter walk...honest, Guv...

Thanks @Gramps49 I love Calvin and Hobbes.

@Bishops Finger I think safety overrules any resolutions.

    My thoughts exactly!

  • You'd have far too much time to think up resolutions if you end up flat on your coccyx. Sensible call.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Very sensible call, BF; I absolutely hate Patches of Treachery, and will only brave them if I absolutely have to.
Touch wood, there still isn't any of the sn*w with which we've been threatened here, although I shan't be holding my breath. There was slightly sleety stuff falling as I came home, but it doesn't seem to have amounted to anything - yet ...

Work was decidedly less frazzled today, and even with a quick whizz round Tessie's afterwards, I was still home by half past five, which left plenty of time to make a paella for supper, with plenty for leftovers. :)
  • I have delayed the "lose weight" bit of my resolution because my scales had a flat battery . I have just replaced the battery, know what the Christmas damage was, and will start.
  • I can't put in my retirement paperwork until less than 90 days from the date of retirement so I have to wait a couple of weeks. But things are advancing.
  • No Patches of Treachery to speak of this midday (I rose late from my Berth), so The Walk was accomplished, along with a trip to Tess Coe - but daily exercise on shore may not be an easily-achieved wossname...I shall try, though...
  • My resolutions are not going well so far. Exercise (have done it twice), riding exercise bike at home for 2 mins every hour and build up from there. Trying to buy nothing, slightly more successful as I've forgotten to bid on items that have taken my fancy at local auction house. Budget says thank you! I need to buy a pair of shoes to wear at home in winter and the pair I liked the look of is reduced by half, so even though not working for my NY resolution to buy less, they are probably too good to pass up. I am trying also to reach out to friends via email, to try to keep in contact a bit better and I'm off to do another now. It's too easy to assume people are going ok and I hope that popping a message into their inbox might be nice, I hope so anyway!

My excuse on the walking front is that we are having summer temperatures much higher than usual, and over more days than usual. I tried going to bed earlier so I get up and walk to the shops first thing but it's difficult to go to sleep when it's so hot so I'm sleeping in later. I'm doing the movement exercises inside before the house heats up too much.
