Maybe in fact the whole hat thing is a gimmick and he wants everyone to keep talking about the hat and his appearance rather than all the bullshit he spouts on a regular basis.

Galloway is pretty up-front and vocal about expressing his opinions. I don't think he is trying to distract attention from them.
  • Oh right. You think that all the Muslims in Rochdale were aware that the BNP had given him support and that he had completely different leaflets printed for the "Muslim" areas versus the "White" areas?

You think he is something other than a two-faced waste of space?

The BNP giving someone support is Nick Griffin trying to be relevant, probably best to ignore what the BNP may or may not say and consider each case on its merits.

I've seen the two letters that you refer to, and he does have form for sending out letters specifically to the Muslim communities in elections in contests. OTOH I've also seen people from his campaign say that they hadn't seen either letter.

According to the 2019 census, "the ethnicity of residents in the borough of Rochdale is 74 per cent white, 19 per cent Asian, 4 per cent black, 2 per cent mixed and 2 per cent other". even if 100% from those non-white classes had turned up to vote he'd have only come second. So he didn't win on some imagined 'Muslim vote' alone.
  • Nope. He said one thing to the Muslims and another to the Brexity misogynist white voters.

He played a whole constituency and because none of the major parties stood up, he romped through the centre.

The established parties left a hole that needed to be filled. Labour and Greens disowned their candidates, the Tory candidate went on holiday, and the LibDems seem to be keeping a low profile in a constituency they once dominated (MP plus control of Borough Council) but where the misdeeds of the last LibDem MP for the constituency still blight their image.
