Computer may be dying

HuiaHuia Shipmate
Hi everyone, I'm not sure where to put this, it's just an early warning that my computer may be dying, so if I suddenly disappear it's most likely to be the computer, rather than me.

My access to emails has already died. I probably won't be able to get it fixed for at least a week, unless I rob a bank.

Meanwhile you can ignore this if I keep posting.

Good luck with getting it fixed before you vanish!

@Huia, is there anyone who can help you figure out what may be wrong with your computer? I hate to think of your being cut off from the Ship and the wider Internet. When we have power cuts here, I can still read online and send brief messages via my phone androids/ Samsung Tablets. Are you able to do this?

Yes, best wishes for a speedy recovery! I hope repairs are not too expensive - I once found it cheaper to buy a reconditioned laptop, rather than to have the old and dying one mended...our local computer hospital (ha! :grimace: ) wants about £100 just to look at the thing...

Currys has an ebay ‘shop’ where it sells returns at low cost, if that is any use.

Magically I now have emails again and when I click on a thread it goes to the most recent unread post which it wasn't doing before. I don't know what happened, but it seems to have righted itself. I will still make an appointment with the tech people as I want sort out some less cataclysmic glitches that are probably a result of my ignorance.

Ultimately I want to find the community group that offers cheap help. I know they exist, I just need to find where they hang out.

If things get really dire I can use free computers at either the community library, where I volunteer or the City Library system.

    Thanks for the support.
  • I suspect the librarians are most likely to know who those people are!

Librarians know everything, or at least where to look it up.

Mine always did that for the Ship and other threads. A couple of months ago, that just stopped with neither explanation or warning. I kept going and it restored itself on Thursday morning. I don't know why, it just did it.

I've decided computers are just weird, I still don't know how I ended up with some really old stuff I'd saved on Internet Explorer suddenly appearing on this computer when I switched to using the neighbours powerful WiFi (at their invitation of course - I have neither the desire nor the ability to be able to do otherwise).

I was delighted that some more recent meditations that I thought I'd lost forever turned up too.
