Is there an App for..?

Surprisingly often I wonder if there’s an app for some handy wee function or other; something it seems there must be, but a search of Google Play or the App Store isn’t bearing fruit.

I wondered if there happened to be a handy Ship thread somewhere for people to ask about and/or make suggestions for an app for something in particular, but I can’t find one, so I thought I’d start one and see if it proved useful. I think it’s probably a Heaven thing rather than All Saints - although I am intrigued to see what a Hell thread on the topic would produce 😆.

I’m looking for an app to track professional reading. I’d like to be able to record books / articles / website stuff that I can log as part of CPD (teacher in my case), but the App Store search isn’t being that helpful.
Bonus points for being easy to export (or even copy & paste) into the online portal we have to report training and stuff on. Extra bonus points for a nice clean, maybe even cute bookshelf-type interface

  • Try looking up “reference manager” and see. The ones I saw were aimed mostly at people doing theses etc I think, but might work for you just as well.

What I’m trying to find is an Android usable app that will make the phone screen and flashlight flash on and off in a super eye catching pattern when the phone rings, so my dear husband stops ignoring his phone when people call, even if it’s in his very lap.

I used Endnote as a reference manager when I was doing my doctoral thesis and it was very good, it integrated with MS word and would also let you save pdfs of articles into it. That was about 19 years ago, I imagine it has more rather than less features now. It will depend a somewhat on how much functionality you need and how much you are prepared to pay though.

@Lamb Chopped My hearing aids are linked to my phone can Mr. Lamb's aids use that app? I have it set to a loud Billy Joel tune enough to wake the dead. Others can not hear it, just me.

  • He wears them far less than he ought to, because they hurt him, I think, and he never would confess that until it was far too late to get them remade. And it's going to be the devil of a job talking him into trying a new set at vast expense. So I'm looking for other ways to alert him to a phone call that don't involve him actually hearing anything.
  • @Lamb Chopped I did some online searching. I expect you are a talented searcher, too, so I may not be linking to anything you haven't already seen. However, just in case...

Scroll down on this page to find some info about using the accessibility settings on one's phone to make lights flash. The thread is old, so the info might be out of date. However, reading it might suggest ways you could play with Mr. L's phone.
  • Ha. I did it, and it worked! At least I think it worked, we'll get the real test when someone calls and we see....
  • Cool! So glad.
