The cap-retrieval reminded me of one of the swimming badges I had to do at school, but in my case it was a brick. I remember being worried that I wouldn't be able to do it because I couldn't open my eyes under water (and was very short-sighted even if I could), but it turned out to be quite easy - just aim for it when you dive in, and rummage about a bit ...

Now back to proper athletes ...
Royal Life-Saving Society, bronze medallion. And making a float out of clothing too.

In Proper Athletics there have been runners falling like ninepins in the 5,000m heats.

That was impressive for Ms Julien Andrew to win the women's 100m by a clear 1m of their winning margin.
I think you mean Julien Alfred.

Indeed - IIRC a pair of pyjamas. Having said that I didn't get a bronze medallion - just a silly wee badge to sew on my bathing costume!

Now that brings back memories. Dress for the occasion in pyjamas and swimming trunks. Jump in, swim some distance in pyjamas, then whilst treading water remove pyjama bottoms, tie knots in legs, and make in to float.

So if I'm ever going for a stroll along the river bank in my pyjamas and fall in, I'll be OK.

  • Oh dear, posting after bedtime again, sorry!
What I intended to say was that falling seems to have been feature of these Olympics.

There was much falling off gymnastics equipment earlier, and today the skate-boarders were falling from great heights. The first round of the park-style(?) finals saw the first six of eight contestants fall, and more to follow in the other rounds.
No doubt plenty more in events that I didn't see.

  • I found out today that a new sport this year is Breaking (competitive break dancing). Reminds me of the school arts weeks in the early 1980s, where we also had BMX displays.
A missed opportunity for Boules this year I think.
