Here are a couple of questions: How many Shipmates have you met in person? (For me: one.) How many Shipmates do you sometimes contact by E-mail (not the message facility on the Ship)? (For me: two.)

In person: at least a dozen, probably closer to 20 - 25. Via email: two or three, maybe. On Facebook: a gazillion. Approximately.

Having been on several shipmeets without keeping count, I may have met 30 or so shipmates, possibly more. I keep up with a few on FB but don’t email any. I also follow the blogs of 2 ex shipmates.

Quite a few, many of whom have become RL friends who I still see even though they’re not on the Ship any more. I met my wife through the Ship and several Shipmates came to the wedding.

I think I've met 10 Shippies over the years at meets in Edinburgh (and a casual one in Linlithgow*), and at a Real Life™ event in New Brunswick.

I'd be delighted to meet some more! :)

    * does bumping into someone in the chippy count?

I have not (knowingly) met any in real life. I'm in contact with a couple via off-Ship (as well as on board) means. I don't do Facebook.

    I feel quite the outsider.

I've met a few, including one I met on a retreat who pm'd me when she worked out who I was. Living in London when we had relatively frequent shipmeets helped.

I’ve never met a shipmate in person, at least that I’m aware of. I swore off Facebook, and I can’t think of any shipmates I’ve emailed (as opposed to PMing on the Ship).

But I can’t say any of that has decreased my sense of community here.

A bunch! There was a Shipmeet or two in the DC area in the early 2000s but I don’t remember everyone there. I’m in touch with a lot of Shipmates via Facebook, though I’m awful at keeping track of what their Ship names are except in a few cases…

London Shipmeets, the Scarborough meet, a Swansea weekend… plus quite a few who were local to me. And three while visiting a fanous mouse…!
  • I think I have met or six in person.
    Two a few times.
One other in Tamarama and one in NZ
    Two have visited my home.
Two have died a few years ago.

I don't have regular email contact.

What I said about feeling an outsider sounds as though I meant something I didn't. I feel there's a strong online community here and that I'm part of it. I'm just realising how many people are, or have been, involved in offline contact that I haven't been part of.

I've met loads of Shipmates, and am grateful!
Colorado Axe Murderer meets were lots of fun.
Zandolit was extremely brave to meet Daughter-Unit and I when were were dressed in our Jedi robes.

    Yes!!
Some Shipmates have come to My Fair City, and two stayed with me.
Met several of you when we were in England and Paris.

I think often of the ones I've met who have gone to Glory

  • I’ve met 3 shipmates at Greenbelt but that probably says as much about the community at Greenbelt as it does about the ship. But I don’t need to meet shipmates to feel part of the community here; it’s an online community.

At one time both our vicar and the area bishop (pete173) were on the Ship. But not any more.

Yes, that’s what I was getting at above. And it’s an online community that allows for some anonymity. That can present challenges, but it can also create safe space.

Lots. I used to go to meets in Oxford. Joan the Dwarf, Quinine, Robert Armin, Andy [something], the famous rachel, Debye Waller, Angel of the North, Motherboard, Trisagion, George [something], Ruth W... these are the ones I remember. There were others. Of all of those the only ones still on the boards are Sandemaniac and Celtic Knotweed.

I was in touch with Robert Armin until the day he died. I'm still in touch with Quinine, ChastMastr, Firenze, Jedijudy and Piglet.

We met @rosamundi in Oxford a few times too. Hope you are doing OK, Ariel! We are close enough we ought to have a mini-meet.

I'm not sure we ever travelled far to a shipmeet, but I do recall the last one we went, bar meeting people at the Cropredy Festival (I recall meeting Jigsaw, and @Ags most recently, and I'm sure there were others in old Ship days, was with the Welsh contingent - St Gwladys as was then (@Priscilla - that's you, I think?), Darllenwr possibly, plus one other, at a local pub for a meal.

I've met quite a few at shipmates over the years and stayed with one former shipmate in New Zealand (and met present shipmate Huia there too) so maybe I get an award for travelling the furthest to meet other shipmates?! Attended Wightmeet once so spent a whole weekend with a bunch of shipmates. I attended Ken's funeral so met a few there. There's at least two shipmates who still post who I knew IRL before the Ship. There's several I interact with on Facebook (mostly on Piglet's daily Wordle post)...but don't necessarily know what their ship names are! One of the shipmates I know in real life is my former minister - we sometimes communicate via email, and sometimes by Ship pm. So quite a few really!

I have good memories of Shipmeets in both Toronto and Ottawa, most recently with AtA and SPK in Ottawa last summer. Canadian shipmates have become a smaller crowd over the years, and Canada being what it is, dispersed over a very large area.

I do not know how many shipmates I have met. I once sat in a room knowing that out of about five people there, four at least were shipmates and this was not a shipmeet! Rules about not outing a shipmate applied so I did not mention it especially as I did not know the shipnames of at least one. The first shipmate I met at shipmeets response to my real life name was along the lines of "O you are X, your stats help was very useful". I also have known a person who signed up for the ship who never posted, yes I checked that there username existed on the boards at the time. I have to presume there are other shipmates who I have met who I have not recognised as shipmates. How many is anyones guess.

I am not famous, these are not necessarily high profile shipmates but I think for a certain group of people at a certain time (2000s UK) the ship became a bit of a cultural centre. I was among that group and there were others. The group which is UK I think has overlaps with University Chaplaincy, University Christians (staff), Alt-Worshippers, Liberal/radical Christians and may be Nonconformists.

So out of those I know I guess around twenty at various times.

I'm married to one shipmate. And I think I've met like half a dozen to dozen shipmates in person, mostly at local shipmeets, perk of living in a big metro area that people travel to. Mamacita lives pretty near us (regionally speaking), I think she's the one I've seen the most IRL.

And I think I'm in touch with 30 or so shipmates on facebook.

So, counting ex Shipmates, I've met 27. That I can remember.
How many have I stayed with? 5
How many have stayed with me? 10. Including the great privilege of having Uncle Pete under my roof.
I'm in regular, like almost daily, weekly, or at worst monthly, touch via FB and/or email and/or messaging services (not the Ship) and/or phone with 10 Shippies/ex Shippies
I see daily or most weeks 2 (one is my wife, the other my bishop).

Nice to meet you both 👋🏻

  • To the best of my knowledge I have only met two shipmates, and in both cases this was long before I came on board. One I first met in 1970, the other about 15 years ago. It took me some time to work out who they were from information in their postings.
  • I met a fair few Shipmates many years ago at a MW event which featured in a Christian Resources Exhibition. IIRC there was also an evening Meet (on the day of the multiple MW Reports - just after Easter 2006?), at which I met (inter alia) ken and Daisymay, both of whom are no longer with us. A few others have also crossed my path IRL now and then.

Today, there are one or two with whom I communicate by PM - a useful facility.

I've been to a couple of Shipmeets, but many years ago. Both were very enjoyable. I'm unable to remember exactly where one of them was, but the first was at Highgate Cemetery and would have been around 2007(ish) assuming my memory and mathematics are correct.

First meet I attended was in Oxford. Welsh Dragon, the Famous Rachel plus others whose names I can’t recall. Rowen, over here on sabbatical, poss Beets (Beethoven) and of course, Dolphy. Elsewhere, Pipkin, Poppy, Arietty, Quizmaster, Spike, Smudgie, Marvin, Pete (RIP) , Tractorgirl and all the Wightmeet crowd. And others. Have met with HeavenlyAnnie once at Greenbelt . Sporadic email contact with some of these or messenger, generally initiated by my good self, I’ve just realised. A good many more on Facebook although either not wanting to out people or else don’t know their Ship names anyway.

I don’t have that same sense of community as I felt way back in the early 2000s, but as several here have said, one moves on. Still (and as a newly-fledged pensioner now) should/when that happy time comes when I pass on to Higher Things , I’d hope some posters here will remember me with a smile.
