I've been thinking about getting an air fryer and saw all the posts earlier in this topic about small, compact fryers. My question is, are they portable? I don't have enough room in my small kitchen to have it permanently on the work surface, so could it live on a shelf in an alcove just outside the kitchen door (where my "toaster oven" currently lives) and I can just carry it into the kitchen when needed?
Depends how small it is, and what you consider portable? The smaller one drawer ones come in at around 5kg, the dual drawer (or stacked drawer) types will be correspondingly heavier.
5kg is more than 10lbs in old money - which doesn't strike me as all that portable.
I'm not sure how different the current appliances are from what I had a few years ago - effectively a small convection oven with a paddle. Once I got a cooker with separate oven/grill and fan oven, then it was redundant.
I consider I could get by in the kitchen with a sharp knife, a large wok with lid, a baking tray, and a microwave.

Well, as upthread they are just small fan ovens. So it may not be useful depending on how you use your kitchen. For me they are handy as they heat up fast, and are easier to clean and don’t heat up the kitchen in way that the main ovens would. There’s stuff that still going in the oven, but for smaller quantities, especially on a weekday then it’s handy.

My air fryer sits in the corner of the kitchen in what is a fairly inaccessible space, ie beyond my easy reach. I keep it on a wooden board and pull it forward when I use it. The board also serves to avoid any chance of burning the worktop. I hardly ever use my oven now.
Thanks, especially to everyone who has discussed air fryers. I have been thinking about getting one for a while, and I'm going to look at some over the next couple of weeks. I seldom use the oven now since I managed to set the last one on fire, which was really scary.

I'm quite happy with mine and find the large handle makes me more confident with it. Replying to say watch the sales. I came across one just by chance that was 1/3 off. Good luck!

Yes, my mum does exactly that
Battersea Dog's Home?
I presume you can get something like roomba that does wooden/flat floors or whatever.
Self-cleaning no, but I can recommend a pair of crawling 10 month olds for keeping a floor dust free.
😂😂
Presumably you can opitimise this by putting them in Microfibre onesies …

Even better if you can find one who prefers the bum shuffle to crawling.
