I am exhausted. I had a wonderful birthday today. My brother in Chicago posted a card which actually arrived exactly on the right day -which is amazing. I had an early lunch with a friend I first met in 1981 during a holiday job while I was at University in Wellington, bought some winter clothes and visited the Library.

I caught 7 buses, some of which went through areas of Christchurch that were completely unknown to me. Given that I have a Gold Card which allows free bus travel after 9 a.m on weekdays and all weekend I might go back and do some exploring later during the summer (too many people with colds- and worse over winter).

Happy birthday Huia. I recommend exploring the city by public transport; with my gold Opal card I can jaunt around Sydney by bus, train, light rail and metro as well as to Central Coast & Newcastle (160 km) Wollongong and the South Coast ( 120 km) Southern Highlands (120 km) & to Lithgow ( 140 km-just the other side of the Blue Mountains) and the odd day trip can be great fun, even in the rain. The scenery on the train trips is beautiful ( especially coastal lines) and at the end of the line one can grab a pie and a beer at a local pub, check out the op shops and wander the streets till time to catch the train home.

So glad you had a good birthday dear @huia. I love exploring areas by bus. It sounds like a good winter project.

Reading this thread I suddenly realised that both Mr Cats and I have forgotten our anniversary AGAIN. We have forgotten more then remembered it over the past 27 years. My reasoning for this is that since we had less than a month’s engagement, we never had time to get the date fixed in our heads (21st May)!

We mostly remember our anniversary, @cathcats, but once only remembered when my sister-in-law sent us a card.

Thanks everyone. In my mind I've already spent the 2 $50 book tokens several times over. I discovered a book titled, "Women of Nuremberg" about 4 women involved with prosecuting Nazi war criminals, but then I found the library has it on order and now I'm 4th in the queue, so I will search further.
  • Glad to hear you had a great birthday @Huia, I'm very pleased for you! Hunting around for specific books can be so much fun in the detective work involved. As for the spending of book tokens, oh so many books and never enough tokens!!
