@Net Spinster Are you saying the last count had 1,356 family units this year, but there were 440 units last year?
No: of the 5,138 homeless people 1356 were members of families with children. Those 1356 (of whom 855 were children) made up 440 families (which could be one adult one child or more than that).
Thank you for the clarification. No dispute here. I have been involved in the homeless count in Spokane over several years. If anything, I always felt it undercounted the real numbers. Even the Housing and Urban Development Department admits it is not an exact count. But, it is what we have.
People talking here on CBC about Trump going to say to Putin he gets to keep Ukraine parts of it that Russians conquered if Trump gets Putins oil and mineral stuff and whatever. Those are 2 bad guys there. Sell out land because your greedy.

For fans of ultra-lowbrow political insult, MAGA grandees Marjorie Taylor Greene and Laura Loomer are currently having an exchange on X that sounds like it was transcribed from the walls of a washroom stall.
This is probably best kept as a "google it yourself". For now I'll just wonder if CrossFit gym is happy for the free advertising.
Marjorie Taylor Greene is likely the most vocal Israel-skeptic in the House Republican Caucus, a position the pro-Israel Loomer views as rooted in antisemitism. So when Loomer says that "Jews forced Marjorie Taylor Greene to [perform certain allegedly immoral actions]", the meaning is likely that MTG wants people to believe that Jews are responsible for her own moral failings, not that they actually are.

I think Zionists calling Marjorie "Jewish Space Lasers" Taylor Greene antisemitic comes under the heading of 'accidentally correct'.

I carry no brief for either; but I think in her own way MTG is positioning herself for holding attention and being there after Trump is gone, whereas Loomer is focused on the shorter term strategy of 'doing slurs and publicity stunts'.

Yeah, being so openly and vocally Israel-skeptical would be a good niche position for MTG in the Republican Party. Though perhaps a little TOO niche, if the party as a whole won't tolerate that view.
(This is a party whose leader tries to ban antisemitism while simultaneously complaining about "Shylock" bankers, so who knows.)
And AFAICT, Loomer doesn't actually occupy any political office outside of "hanger-on in Trump's circles", so yes, this is probably just about advancing her career as a media shock-jock.
... And AFAICT, Loomer doesn't actually occupy any political office outside of "hanger-on in Trump's circles ...
If you think that your country is run by people who occupy a political office, you illustrate why the people who don't occupy a political office get away with it. Peter Thiel, Kevin Roberts, anyone?

I would not put Laura Loomer in the same category as a billionaire donor or the head of the Heritage Foundation, as far as being a power-behind-the-throne goes. Looking at her c.v., I wouldn't even rank her as high as an entry-level Fox News anchor.
(Incidentally, I have had occasion on this site to mention the Byfields, a family of chesterbellocian Anglicans who played a semi-significant role in right-wing Canadian media in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. One of Loomer's employers has been Rebel News, an organization technically descended from the Byfields' magazines.)

I may have to stand partially corrected. According to an article I just read in The Guardian, Loomer has been influential in getting certain administration staffers dismissed, and is now on a crusade against RFK jr for his supposedly left-wing anti-vax agenda. Apparently she is known in some circles as "Trump's Rasputin".
So, probably more powerful than a low-level Fox mouthpiece, at least. Still wouldn't put her in a class with Thiel and Roberts, though I suspect the comparison is ultimately asymmetrical: Thiel and Roberts have diffused influence over the entire conservative movement, whereas Loomer has direct influence over the actions of one powerful man within that movement.
It appears Trump got rolled by Putin. The presser was not a presser but a couple of speeches. Much confusion from the reporters
I anticipated this would happen. Trump is in damage control mode. There was no deal Trump could make that Putin would accept. Trump thinks this is a property deal, it isn't. For Putin this is personal.
... against RFK jr for his supposedly left-wing anti-vax agenda.
Left-wing anti-vax???
The people most likely to die from lack of vaccination are those who don't get vaccinated because of their extreme right wing views that consider these to be anti-choice (or, more likely the right wing views of their parents). If anti-vax is predominantly believed by the right wing, and therefore leads to deaths that are biased towards right wingers and their children, then it follows that anti-vax must be left wing because it kills off right wing voters.
... against RFK jr for his supposedly left-wing anti-vax agenda.
Left-wing anti-vax???
Well, just for starters, I'm pretty sure Big Pharma(generally viewed as allied with the right) are PRO-vax, and I suspect Loomer is mouth-piecing for them.
Also, I wasn't paying much attention to the anti-vax movement in its early days, but I always got the impression that it had a following among the more luddite fringes of the environmentalist movement, eg. RFK jr. himself.
So Loomer might be framing it as "Buncha anti-capitalist hippies trying to put the hard-working, life-saving entrepreneurs at the drug companies out of business."
Left-wing anti-vaxxers certainly exist, more so pre-covid than now since the far right picked up that ball and ran with it. I know a very hippy-dippy former nurse who home birthed her three youngest, refused to vaccinate them and home educates (in fairness her eldest, about 8 years older, had a really rough time in mainstream school and ended up going away to an independent school of the unprogrammed sort).

Here's the thing. Left-wingers don't want right-wingers to die EITHER. It's rather presumptuous, nay UGLY, to think that all left-wingers want right-wing children to die. Just cut that out right now. It's pushing the bounds of libel.

I think @Alan Cresswell was describing the world as Loomer sees it.
(Though my own guess is that she's more just shilling for Big Pharma[probably a paid lobbyist at this point], and knows that calling your enemies left-wing is very helpful for turning Republicans against them.)

Yeah, a Good Life type interest in producing your own food can look awfully close to the 'homesteader' movement.

I have a vague idea that the Kibbo Kift was pulling in members from bohemian neo-pagan circles. Though that perception might result from their connection with Social Credit, which in its British incarnation tended to attract self-styled intellectual eccentrics from across the spectrum.
How come Putin, who has been accused of several war crimes gets the red-carpet treatment, including a flyover of a B2 with several F22s, four in the air and four on the ground while European Leaders along with Zelenski is greeted at the White House front door by a hhandshake from the person in charge of protocol?
And, then, the next day, a Russian personnel carrier is seen running around with a Russian and American Flag on its antennas. Talk about an insult to the Ukrainian people.
While I am at it, with the gang related mass shooting in NYC this past week, I am surprised Trump did not order National Guard personnel on its streets! He gets all upset that a White Federal Employee in DC gets mugged; but when several black people at a bar get shot up, all we hear is crickets.
Sure don't want to go to heaven if that bad guy is going to be there even when I got no believe in heaven anymore. Could be a hell for a few people that I can think about. Don't believe in that no more also. Too bad.
That link says that this guy is serious. I looked up on search and there are lots of links about this. That he means it. In that link his press secretary says so.

I was raised to believe that we defeated fascism in World War II and that we would never allow it again in the world. I don't always state publicly my political opinions, and like anyone I don't always know all of the facts, but when it comes to this man and this administration I'm not going to be like one of the silent minority of 1930's Germany. This man is a danger to not just America but the entire world and that's not an exaggeration, he's dismantling democracy and endangering the planet on a daily basis, and we. all. know. it. -JW III...
'To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.' - Theodore Roosevelt"
A friend of mine--yes, I have some--pointed out when Obama was president, certain militia groups warned he was going to send the military in to certain cities, and they were organizing to fight him. It did not happen.
But this president has already sent the military in to Los Angelas and Washington DC. There are reports he is planning on sending Guard units into Chicago--could be this week. This in spite of the fact the Illionois governor and the mayor of Chicago have said there is no need to send them in.
Where are those militia units now? All I am hearing is crickets. Don't tell me it wasn't a racist thing.
Americans, if you live in cities like Chicago, Baltimore, New York City, Seattle, expect visitors soon, courtesy of DJT.
It's so good to see imagination running overtime. Or, maybe someone needs to have a hearing test. Because, I don't know anyone calling Trump "President of Europe". We have three Presidents of European Institutions, and many Presidents of nations within Europe, but wouldn't call any of them "President of Europe" ... much less some trumped up idiot elected to lead a nation that's not even European.
TRUMP:
I know loyalty. I know winning. You’re too idealistic. This isn’t the Age of Reason anymore—it’s the age of survival.
JEFFERSON:
And in trading liberty for survival, you will have neither.
I did not risk treason against a king to see my country fall under the rule of another—in a red tie instead of a crown.
Power must always serve the people—not bend them to its will.
TRUMP (standing up):
You had your time, Tom. You wrote your fancy words. I’m doing what has to be done.
JEFFERSON (softly, yet fiercely):
And I wrote those words for moments exactly like this.
When the flame of liberty flickers low…
When truth is drowned out by volume…
When one man seeks to become more than the people who gave him power…
That’s when patriots must rise—not with muskets—but with memory. With courage. With principle.
Because tyranny never knocks—it slips in through applause.

Former presidents get lifelong Secret Service protection. Former vice presidents only get six months. Anything else is at the discretion of the executive branch. To the best of my knowledge the only vice president to be the target of an assassination plot was Andrew Johnson. John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirator George Atzerodt was supposed to kill Johnson at more or less the same time Booth killed Lincoln, but Atzerodt went to a bar and got drunk instead.
Apparently Mr Biden extended Ms Harris' protection, but Trump has cancelled it. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that she hasn't ruled out standing as a Presidential candidate in 2028 ...
Claims of trump's alleged death started after US Vice President JD Vance said that he would step into the President's shoes in case of a ‘terrible tragedy.’
Probably working on plans for the invasion of Chicago.
Or he is planning on how to get rid of JD Vance now that Vance has been so presumptuous as to suggest that he could fill Trump's shoes. That is not the sort of thing Trump will let go unpunished!
Probably working on plans for the invasion of Chicago.
Or he is planning on how to get rid of JD Vance now that Vance has been so presumptuous as to suggest that he could fill Trump's shoes. That is not the sort of thing Trump will let go unpunished!
(1) Under the 25th amendment, if JD Vance gets half of the cabinet to sign a letter declaring that Donald Trump is unable to carry out the duties of the presidency, JD Vance becomes Acting President — which for all practical purposes is exactly the same thing as being POTUS — as soon as that letter is transmitted to Congress. Now it’s true that Congress could assemble for the purpose, and by vote restore Trump as president, but before that could happen we get to . . .
(2) Under the holding in Trump v. United States, it simply can’t be disputed that the president’s core powers include commanding the military, and issuing pardons. These are in no way areas of “shared responsibility” with Congress, where the president’s immunity from criminal prosecution, both while he’s president and afterwards, is “merely” presumptive: immunity here is absolute.
Again, neither (1) or (2) is something that can be disputed: it’s as black letter as American law can possibly be.
It follows that, if JD Vance should through a combination of bribery and extortion, induce half the cabinet to sign the requisite letter, Vance would instantly become POTUS. He could then order the military or the Secret Service to assassinate Trump, after having — remember, he’s already president — pardoned both the cabinet, himself, and anyone else involved in this PERFECTLY LEGAL COUP from any prosecution for murder, conspiracy, and sedition, as well as for offering and accepting anything and everything in the way of bribes for having committed murder, sedition, etc.
Again, it's unlikely that this scenario would play out as speculated (or at all), but it would be perfectly legal under recent Supreme Court jurisprudence.
