But, oh dear - when we got to the vet I was unclipping her when she launched out of the car, her legs didn't hold her, she fell on her face - grazed her chin and broke a front tooth. So, another operation on Tuesday.
Aroha, my cat, whose name means "Love" in Maori went up the road and beat up the disabled cat, whose able bodied friend beat up Aroha. One vet visit later Aroha is recovering and I've discovered that "Fancy Feast" is a useful hiding place for anti-biotics.

I think catios are a brilliant invention @Huia. I haven't worked out a good spot for one at our place. I think we would need a portable one, so it could be in different spots for winter and summer. I should look into that ....
Very strange trip to the dog park. I took Molly for her walk at 6:15 this morning to our little mobile home dog park, and found the park filled with quarters. Not in a pile as if they might have dropped from someones pocket, but scattered here and there. ?????????? I am now three dollars and twenty five cents richer.
I had to look up "catio" and realised that we had a rudimentary one that my father built for our two Siamese when I was a child. Here a couple of our neighbours have them and they seem an excellent idea, both for the safety of the cats and the preservation of the wildlife.

We don't use the term, "Replace", as we wonder who will be our next companion, because dogs are irreplaceable. But we will turn our mind soon to who plugs the 🐕 gap in our lives.

You could ask your local animal shelter for advice if you want a rescue. I have heard that you can get portable ramps for elderly dogs who have trouble getting into cars, but our dog only weighs 12.5 kilos (and is young enough to jump in anyway) so I haven't needed to try one.
Stupid cat is ill with a UTI again. Crushing up anti-biotics into its food (they know, the buggers, they know) because I don't have sufficient hit points to survive trying to give him a pill directly. He's a very placid animal normally but, well, we all know what pilling cats is like. Vets have a special spell they use which causes the usual methods ("just flick the pill to the back of its mouth, then rub its throat a bit") to actually work but it's clearly a class ability only available to Vets of a sufficiently high level.
Aroha needed medication recently. She beat up the disabled cat up the road, and was, in turn, beaten up by the disabled cat's housemate.
I wasn't confident I could get her to take it, but I put each dose into a small amount of Fancy Feast, a food she adores, ensured she had eaten it, then fed her as usual. I was very relieved it worked and she was back to being her usual self.
I had my cup of coffee by my chair. I got up to use the bathroom. I returned to find Molly my dog drinking out of my cup. YUCK, NO, EEEEEEE. Now the question is has she done that before and I did not know it and drank it anyway? I have seen really bad things in her mouth. Dead Mouse anyone.
We found out on Monday that cats who have had kittens early (before being fully grown themselves) are prone to cancer of the nipple. Cassie is going for surgery next week - hopefully it’s just in one nipple and they’ve caught it early enough.
Her daughter, typically, is not at all sympathetic.
Cassie came back yesterday with a Cone of Shame (which she has managed to remove overnight) and an unnecessary bandage on her paw which she won’t let me remove. I haven’t yet seen the shaved tummy which she says is now Strictly Private. She’s about as resentful as I’ve ever seen her, but the vet says the cancer appears to have been in one nipple only with no trace of any secondaries, so hopefully she will be fine.
…and now Cassie has to have a body suit instead, because she is able to remove the Cone of Shame. She is telling us very loudly that it is Too Hot and this is Even Worse. It’s going to be a long week.
Our fluffy cat has been watching Cheery daughter very suspiciously as she packs up her stuff for a house move. We know that the actual moving day will be stressful for him, so I am hoping Cheery son will oblige with the needed amusements, cuddles and if needed a nap on his bed while we get on with the moving stuff.
When we moved to this current house poor Mr Fluff disappeared under one of the beds and didn't come out for a couple of days, he was so upset. At least this time we know to provide lots of support for him, whereas we were a bit taken by surprise during our own house move.
Molly had an argument with a skunk, The skunk won. I rubbed her down with tomato paste, washed her with dog shampoo, rubbed her down with dry dog shampoo. Better but still a bit of a smell. Dog skunk cleaner ordered from Amazon to arrive tomorrow. Washed her collar as well. She did not seem to really mind the stink, but was not too happy about the attempted clean up.
We’ve had an unusual amount of skunk activity lately… slightly odd to be making breakfast and seeing a characteristically black-and-white entity in the garden finishing up lunch. Fortunately the cats, though fascinated, have been content to be fascinated from a safe indoor distance…
Cassie had the body suit removed last night and is finally allowed out, which she’s very happy about. She’s made a good recovery and the vet thinks he probably caught the cancer in its early stages, so she should be fine.

Cats at mine had lots of attention from Cheery son while we helped Cheery daughter with her house move. We have decided to leave her bedroom door open, as they keep wanting to be in her bedroom, which i both good and bad. Mr Fluff (Monet) sits in the centre of the room, looking confused (to me, anyway). My other thought was that the cats are scoping out her former abode, for their own space! I wouldn't put it past them!
Stan the Man has been confined inside for nearly 2 weeks with a fracture of one of the small bones in his left forepaw. Probably sustained after jumping off the fence (about 2m) & landing awkwardly. Limp has improved but he will remain inside for another 10 days. He is displeased but resigned to confinement. Silly boy thinks he’s still 2 not pushing 11. His sister Lily has to be let out surreptitiously; luckily it’s been wet & she only wants to go out to relieve herself. Despite all this Stan remains his usual sweet natured self.
I’m pretty sure that between them our cats have at least a dozen…
Very strange cat and mouse event yesterday. I was in the basement for some reason and saw something that looked like an unfamiliar mouse toy on the floor. Turned out it was a very dead, sopping wet dead juvenile-looking mouse. Found another one nearby then after throwing both out male cat shows up with another probably dying mouse he had just retrieved from underneath the washing machine. Last mouse placed outside on chance it was viable.
Whole thing very strange as I say. I don’t think we’ve ever had actual mice in the basement in our 15 years here. No idea how they got here and what relative role between cats and other factors in their demise.
Maybe the cats brought them in? Years ago I came home late to find a dead rat on my path. I went to bed thinking that I would bury it in the morning. When I got up I fought it lying in the hall and my cat proudly proclaiming he had caught and killed it.
They never go outdoors which is the puzzling bit… so the mice must have got in somehow. I’m not totally surprised our basement isn’t impervious to mice though slightly surprised we’ve gone so long without seeing any if that’s the case…
We had an infestation of mice a couple of years ago and never did find where they got in. Apparently they can get through the tiniest cracks. We filled in everything that we could get a pencil into and hoped for the best. So far so good...
The dog was completely useless. We had mice running around the living room and she didn't even bother to get up and investigate. We had to use traps in the end.
We use humane traps because I hate to murder the little beasties. The difficulty is in where to release them, as they can find their way back from surprising distances. Yes - I actually recognised them in the traps on several occasions. Now we usually drive them a few miles to give them the opportunity to explore new woodland frontiers. (I'd rather leave them at the obnoxious neighbours' house, but they have cameras everywhere).
We tried humane traps and the mice just laughed at them. Getting them with snap traps wasn't easy either: we had to resort to glueing the bait to the trigger...
There is no point in doing catch and release unless you're going to drive them at least 3 miles away, they just come back. We would have done that if the mice had cooperated though: they were field mice, so would have been fine outdoors.

We've been using them for several years and found they work well. The usual bait is a small blob of peanut butter - not too much or they leave a lot of mess and the more muscular ones have the energy to claw away some of the plastic. A mile seems to be enough distance here, but much less and you start to recognise them when they come back for the free meal.
Standing outside last night around 10.00pm and the bat(s) whizzing to and fro faster than the eye could follow. Too quick to see whether it was just one or more, but magic either way.

Mochi is in peak condition, and is bringing home the local mouse population to ‘play with’ at night.
