I'm still not quite sure why I appear to be confusing people here. I'm not saying that lynching randomly is better than lynching for reasons of suspicion. Of course it isn't! But both of those things are better than not lynching at all.
Miss du Chat looked at the Honourable Miss Alton in confusion - surely she could understand the maths? Lynching someone innocent will improve the odds for the Mafia - from 7:2 to 6:2, and assuming they can pick someone off overnight, from there to 5:2. So if someone is not certain, no lynching keeps the odds better for the innocents.
And keeping on insisting on this is just adding to Miss du Chat's convictions that the Honourable Miss Alton was in fact rather phony and dishonourable.
Phereniki is thinking about the odds (& at the same time thinking that this is why ratio and probability are taught in school and she must remind her dear charges of this should she return to dry land after the break!).
We have learned from the other night that there is a doctor on board who, for whatever reason, wishes to remain anonymous. Phereniki hasn’t quite got to grips with how this might influence the odds.
Is one of these 2 a wicked murderer? How to tell? The map making has little to say. Kookoosint had felt that Miss Amy was a naive innocent, and that the bad ones would more than love us to crucify* her, but is there any flogging to do before hand?
Miss Amy's nomination. Is she a naif? or wicked? But Fletcher is also appearing unusual? Must needs do some more navigation.
Miss du Chat looked at her fellow passengers and wondered how sacrificial she felt. "The problem with anyone being sure about the identity of the doctor or detective is that the Mafia will target those characters."
Last night the Mafia must have targeted someone protected by the doctor. For the doctor to have worked out who to protect the doctor must have spotted something, which could have been a Mafiosi being threatened.
Dear me, says Kookoosint. He is developing the hunch that the Bad Ones are controlling the debate. He wonders, wonders, wonders, then folds up his map. Puts his pencil behind his ear, after putting his long dirty blond, sunbleached hair into a pony tail, sets his teeth on edge, accidentally bites his tongue whilst setting his teeth on edge, cracks his knuckles, visits the head (ship's toilet) and has a long, long think there, then washes his hands in sea water and vinegar, looks at the ukulele and picks it up, starting to sing (tune see Here):
Jack was every inch a sailor
9 and 20 years a whaler
Jack was every inch a sailor
He was born upon the bright blue sea
He sailed away wi' a bunch of motely looking thugs
He'd packed his clothes, a bottle of scotch, but never took no drugs
He thought he's see a fine bright port but unfor-tune-ate-lee
the ship went down and now he has to vote within round three
He consid'red the dishonourable Ms Alton, named Amy
And thought a little 'bout that one named Pher-uh-wren-ick-key
He patted Rover, Miss du Chat and hear the birdie sing
And cast his vote reservedly and then enthusiastic sing'd:
Fletcher, you are going over-board
I think you're a Mafia over-lord
Time to crucify you - we're done wi' thee
And chuck you in the bright blue sea!
*sigh* Surely it is pretty logical that if we do nothing and let bad people kill us it will be bad? I do not know whether Ms. Alton is right about who she suspects, but I fail to see why we would lynch her for not being a pacifist considering that no one else here shows any signs of pacifism either.
It seems to me that Fletcher is either guilty or quite smart, or of course both. Lacking any information on which of these despite requests I will have to be suspicious.
Miss du Chat looked at Gwai and Kookoosint and pondered some more. She sat there wondering to herself. "One of you must be the other Mafia, but which? Because I am so, so certain that Fletcher is innocent after last night, and it's not surprising that he isn't saying much after that attempt to 'garrotte him with a butter knife'."
I don't like to be seen as being heavily influenced by others ** but the timing of others' choices, and recent statements from someleads me to believe that i should also
- Vote for Amy
**on the other hand, who am I kidding ? I hardly put up a fight when CharlieBoy (may he rest in peace) opened that surprisingly delicious second bottle of Glen-Unpronouncable on our doomed ship the other evening.
Miss du Chat has become very suspicious and is continuing to look carefully at everyone's actions. When there were 4 votes to lynch the Honourable Miss Alton, 3 votes to lynch Fletcher and 2 no votes - which will count towards no lynching, then the vote is to lynch Miss Alton. The only options for anyone voting at this stage are to:
Vote to lynch Miss Alton - which at this stage changes nothing and could be a good way for a Mafiosi to cover their tracks;
Vote to lynch Fletcher, which outs anyone voting after all that has been said at this stage as Mafiosi - and results in a no lynching,
Vote for no lynching which does nothing.
Interesting. She keeps wondering about Jonathon, together with Gwai and Kookoosint, who have both voted to lynch Fletcher. Now would a mafiosi make sure their companion is definitely lynched?
What else does she know? Jonathon and Kookoosint both voted to lynch Lambie, who was acting suspiciously - almost as if she wanted to be lynched. A Mafiosi would have wanted anyone innocent lynched, but that's not conclusive. They both voted for no lynching when the options were Rover or No lynching. Hmm - she keeps worrying away at the problem.
Gwai looks confused. Did I fall asleep again? Did we somewhere get told that Fletcher was the intended victim of last night's mafia attack? Is that what you are saying, Ms. Cat? Because if that was announced, I missed it. And if it wasn't announced, how do you know he was the intended victim?
Voting is now closed. We have eight votes.
Fletcher Christian has three;
The Honourable Miss Alton (Amy) has five.
The Honourable Miss Alton is therefore duly lynched. She was innocent.
Night falls. While everyone discusses the matter, will those of you with night actions please inform me of them by this time on Sunday.
The look on their faces when the end comes. The joke will be worth the telling.
Miss Alton (no time for honourifics) has an ironic smile on her face as she is led up to the gallows. (A gallows on a lifeboat? Why in the... no, don't think about that now.) She has acted with integrity throughout, and is about to pay quite a price for it. If that doesn't tell you something about human nature, then what does?
She refuses a hood. She wants to look her accusers in the eyes as she passes on. Some of them might be feeling rather uncomfortable right now. Some may be rather pleased. But the windows to the soul have the curtains drawn. It is impossible to tell which is which.
As the rope tightens round her neck, Amy tries to use her last moments in this world to contemplate something profound. Too late. The mind cannot focus, and as the baying crowd fades from view, everything is bathed in golden light. It is time to go.
Out, out, brief candle. Life; a shadow and a dream.
How can anyone who appears so innocent be so innocent? It doesn’t seem possible!
Another innocent lynched, there can’t be many of us left. He peeps out from under a paw and thinks “maybe I’m the only innocent left?”
Miss du Chat sat there weeping. She was confused. She knew Fletcher was innocent and had hoped that his certainty meant that he knew something suspicious of the Honourable Miss Alton. She is now regretting all those mean aspersions she cast on that poor innocent girl.
Amid the weeping, lamentations, and gnashing of teeth{Rover's] a stowaway crept out from under the life boat. Would the remaining crew allow him/her[yet to be determined] to remain on board. or would the miscreant be hurled overboard as a substitute for the innocent Miss Alton?
There is not yet any opportunity for a stowaway to appear on the lifeboat.
If a participant doesn't post or vote for two weeks we may consider applications to replace them. Participants whose character dies do not count. Applicants who do not appreciate the reasoning behind the ruling will not be considered.
You all wake up. The waves are a little choppy. A friendly shark is circling the lifeboat with a hopeful look in its eyes.
Kookoosint (NOProphet_N0Profit) is sadly deceased. He was innocent.
Please discuss your response to this sorrowful turn of events. As usual you have until Thursday morning to nominate suspects or scapegoats according to preference.

Dead Kookoosint has a map in his pocket, a marlin spike in his forehead, and blood dripping into his ears (he's lying on his back). The map notes who he voted for in the last round. Did this lead to his demise?
His dying thought was of Miss Amy. He was secretly in love with her. Though only after she was dead. Now his disembodied thoughts are that perhaps, romantically, his body can be consumed by the same shark who ate her, and thusly, that their bodies may be united after death in a way their hearts weren't before death. Hey but wait, their hearts could be united. . . .
I am quite concerned, and I don't think we can afford to have anyone not sharing their thoughts. Who do you suspect, Phereniki? What do you think? I am uncomfortable with your general silence.
Miss du Chat has not slept well. She wakes to see another victim and starts sobbing again. Her last few speculations have not gone well, so she has resolved to not say anything. She thinks back through everything she said and did the day before and worries away, because she had wondered about Kookoosint. Did that mean that the Mafia planned his murder in the night? Oh no! another person to feel guilty about to add to poor Lambie and the Honourable Miss Alton.
Well, if we didn't sleep great, we kept quiet to not disturb those who managed it.
We've all been so quiet , scared to say anything in case one incorrect word or misunderstood intention casts us under suspicion for what's been going on
Poor Kookosint. He was good company - i liked his singing, and he was generous with the supplies, and friendly too.
we do need to keep talking. we need to strike a balance between not giving the bad guys a chance to pick on us, or others to incorrectly suspect us, and from saying so little that nobody gets challenged, or nominated, which the bad guys would dearly love.
Has anyone seen that parrot ?
How's Rover this morning ?
Miss du Chat looked at Gwai and Kookoosint and pondered some more. She sat there wondering to herself. "One of you must be the other Mafia, but which? Because I am so, so certain that Fletcher is innocent after last night, and it's not surprising that he isn't saying much after that attempt to 'garrotte him with a butter knife'."
The other Mafia? We haven’t found the first Mafioso have we?
Hmmmm - could this be a slip of the tongue, a lowering of the guard? Could Miss du Chat be crying crocodile tears?
Miss du Chat looked up, "Um, Rover, at that time I was convinced that poor Miss Alton was the first Mafiosi, and was trying to work out who could be the second." She paused for thought, "if the Mafiosi thought I was suspicious of Kookoosint, it could they thought he was vulnerable to being murdered over night."
M" She paused for thought, "if the Mafiosi thought I was suspicious of Kookoosint, it could they thought he was vulnerable to being murdered over night."
I've been chewing over this, and there may be a missing word or two which might make the understanding easier
But something doesn't make sense (not in terms of your actions) If you (so convinced of Fletcher's innocence) were suspicious of Kookosint, then why would the Mafia target him overnight ? Surely they would be better to let him live and run with your suspicions the next day to try and get him lynched instead ?
(missed edit window)
I feel like that Columbo chappy with his "and one more thing" technique
I'm still suspicious of the Parrot, who, if innocent, seems like a more obvious target for the Mafia to get better numbers.
Is she playing the long game, saying very little publicly but pulling the strings along with a more active and vocal colleague here at sea level ?
Alternatively, if she's not causing a fuss, and not casting suspicion on them, they might be happy to let her live..
Miss du Chat looked up - "sorry not to be clear, I was wondering because I mentioned I was suspicious of Kookoosint at the same time as I was talking about Fletcher being attacked. I just wondered if my suspicions made him a target for the Mafia, since we now know he was innocent."
"I would like to hear from @Gwai to find out why she was so suspicious of @Fletcher Christian and from Fletcher to find out what he thinks, as well as the parrot, @Chelley"
I said why multiple times. Because he nominated Miss Alton before he could have possibly known she was guilty and then stuck to her obsessively. One good reason to do that? If he knew she wasn't guilty and nominated her because of it.
I am also nominating the parrot although I do not promise to vote them because we can't possibly afford not to catch a murderer tonight. We have to nominate the right people to vote for them.
Miss du Chat looked confused, she looked up and asked, "But Gwai, why would an innocent person nominate an innocent person deliberately? Because that's what you are suggesting. That's not the action of an innocent person, that would be the action of a mafiosi ."
It would, and that is the very good reason I thought he was guilty!
Madam cat, you may have noticed that a few people have already been wrongly lynched on this boat already. I am pretty sure without checking that both you and I have voted for the lynching of various innocent people. You may think I am guilty because of that, but I doubt you want to suggest yourself as guilty. So possibly we should conclude that Fletcher kept nominating an innocent person because people make mistakes and Fletcher made a mistake. Feel free to ask him why he was so sure Miss Alton was guilty when she wasn't. I am sure I don't speak for him!
Miss du Chat looked at Gwai - "but I have asked Fletcher why he was so certain ... " she started sobbing quietly again, "and I bear my own guilt for the death of those poor innocents, Lambie and the Honourable Miss Alton."
We have to nominate the right people to vote for them
“I’m with Miss Du Chat. I’m not sure how much we can trust you Gwai. Unless you two have an agenda amongst yourselves? Mademoiselle, do we put him forward?
The situation is getting rather desperate! I do loathe this lynching but it all must end somewhere. Any sign of land yet? And how are the sherry stocks?”
Miss du Chat looked at Phereniki: "I am convinced that Fletcher is innocent, so wouldn't nominate or vote to lynch him. Currently I am totally confused as to who else is innocent or guilty as my ideas were all upset by the innocence of the Honourable Miss Alton".
