  • I often attend evensong at an ancient church similar in size to Wells Cathedral and I have a remarkably similar experience: the music is uplifting, the service is reverend and prayerful, but the sound system is poor to hopeless.

Result: I can scarcely make out what is being said or sung and I have taken to looking up and printing out the readings and the psalm so that I can follow them.

Can someone please wake up to the fact that sound systems matter - and that people with soft voices ought not to be chosen to read the lessons!

Surely the photo at the top of this thread is not Wells Cathedral! Look more like a church in a city in the SW of the US to us.

It’s Gesu Catholic Church in Detroit, Michigan, which was MWed a few weeks ago. This has happened a few other times recently, where the wrong picture has ended up on an MW report discussion thread. Not sure why.

  • It's a bug in the software. Whenever a comment is filed for a report that was ported over from the old Ship, as opposed to being filed on the new Ship, the photo is wrong. This has been fixed several times but always reasserts itself whenever the software is updated. I've given up having Pease keep fixing it.
  • Well, it keeps things interesting. Thanks, Miss Amanda.

80 people at a weekday Evensong - not counting the choir! - is a very good attendance indeed IMHO. I wonder if there was some sort of special visiting party IYSWIM?

Wells Cathedral may be small, but it makes up for that with that amazing west front (as in the photograph, which is now Wells).

Shame about the acoustics, though. Maybe they've improved things since 2017!

Life has its little mysteries and this but one of them!
  • I think that this was the hymn you didn't know.
