  • I love a bit of grace in victory in the morning. Or I would.

Grace, eh. He wouldn't have got a look in against Starc and Boland.

    Nice one!
On the other hand, perhaps W.G. would have been amazing.
  • What was class though was the way several England players shook Head's hand when he got out. That innings changed the game.

    It was good to see.
    Who knows what happens next?

Show me a 'good loser' and I'll show you a loser!

    Oh dear
  • Joe Root.

    Rooooooooooooooooot!

Great innings, especially with all sorts going on at the other end. Can't imagine many more will be added tomorrow, but you never know...

  • Rooooooooooooooooot!

I love it when the crowd shout that. First of all I wonder why they are booing and then I realise.
  • I said (to myself) that if Aus got a 130 run first innings lead, England are done for. With a couple of wickets in hand, it's (as I post) 131. Soz, poms. 🏏 🇦🇺 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
  • OK, Starc has gone, just gives him more time to rest before he destroys the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 opening order.

Question: what is the point of selecting a spinner if he is going to bowl 11.4 overs for 34 while the opposition run up 511?

In theory you don’t know how the pitch might break and presumably want to be prepared for all eventualities.

And once they are there anyway it’s a case of giving your pace bowlers a break.

What I mean is - wouldn't it have been a good idea to bowl Jacks more? It's not like the seamers were less expensive - they were more expensive!
  • At that point it probably became a case of 'but the ground isn't turning and if we overbowl him he'll be too tired to bat well and that's why we picked him'. The powers of going into a match with a somewhat vacilitating plan.
  • There are only three things England need to improve. Their batting, their bowling and their fielding...

There's about 30 hours to go before the start of the 3rd Test (it's an 11:30pm start, moved forward from midnight). Am thinking it will probably be over as a possible contest by breakfast time on Wednesday.

Losing a well-fought contest is disappointing, but you can congratulate the opposition on a good game. But the series so far has been largely gifted merely by a lack of braincells and effort, with a handful of exceptions.
  • I note some cheating Aussie scored 130 on the first day.
My football loving friend maintains VAR has ruined the game. AI is similarly corrupting Cricket.

What happened in the Third Test is that the umpires made a couple of mistakes, even though they were using technology. In the days before Hawkeye and Snicko these mistakes were constantly happening and players just had to put up with it. The difference is that we are now used to the review being ultra-reliable and thus get more upset about errors.

I don't think it is at all like football since VAR since cricket is by nature a stop-start game with many more decision points. I do have reservations about Hawkeye's impact - I feel it downgrades the authority of the umpire with knock-on effects for grass-roots cricket - but I do not think a few high-profile mistakes would or should lead to its removal.
  • I guess we could argue a win of sorts as England finally take a Test into the 4th day...
  • FORASMUCH as it hath pleased Almighty God of his great mercy to take unto himself the souls of the English cricket team: we therefore commit them to the Adelaide Cricket Ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes ... (Did someone say Ashes?) 🇦🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏏⚰️

We could get a financial win by not paying for a plane ticket home for Brendan McCullom. Just leave him in the Outback somewhere to go find Ange Postecoglou.

Souls? What souls? No guts, no souls.
    Dust and ashes .....

Well I now see why Jacks barely bowled in Brisbane. I guess he is just not very good at bowling. Kind of the new Iain Salisbury. He bats OK for a number 8 but surely it would be better to pick at least 4 bowlers on the basis of their being good at bowling.

This is England we are talking. They've not shown that sort of sense in selection in my lifetime that I recall.
  • I suspect sales of tickets for Day 4 are going to be a bit on the slow side....

I doubt Day 3 sales will be any faster bar maybe as souvenirs.

Flippin' heck, I was not expecting that!

Woke up at about 4.30, couldn't get back to sleep, so put TMS on in the kitchen and did the washing up and pottered.

Judging by the silence on my team's WhatsApp I'm the only one who's up to hear it too. There are advantages to mucked up sleep patterns!

A great pity it came when the Ashes were gone, but I'll take all the crumbs I can get.

It's been a low quality series all round, but at least in this instance we were the least bad of the two sides.

I had the commentary on low volume so it was a steady hum in the background, only slightly waking me when something exciting happened. Was grateful to Ben Stokes getting out, as that woke me up properly and I found my alarm had failed. I'd set it to give me time to get up, have breakfast and get an early train, but as it didn't go off, Stokes' demise gave me notice that I had 30 minutes before my train (the station is about a half a mile walk from my home).
