European Parliament passes migration bills

So this package of bills was passed today in the European parliament. It seems like a moderately big deal but I cannot really pick out what the major planks of the legislation are or what they imply. Can any Euro-shipmates shed some light?

  • A couple of comments from the Guardian's report:

The Greens said that “with the migration pact, the lack of solidarity towards asylum seekers & between member states will only get worse.”

The Left group in the European parliament said “today is a dark day for human rights, but the fight for a humane migration policy does not end here.”

My gut feeling (and it's no more than that) is that life will indeed generally become even harder for migrants and refugees. The UK is no longer in the EU, so (in a sense) we don't have a horse in this race, but we may feel the effects, no matter how hard our so-called government tries to *Stop The Boats*.

Yes, EU Shipmates may well have some interesting and enlightening comments from their POV.

They've been concerned for a very long time:

The votes came after years of deadlock, debates and negotiations over the EU’s migration and asylum policies.

The pact’s approval was met with a mix response. It was backed by the parliament’s biggest parties, but elicited strong criticism from some political groups and NGOs.
  • I’d bet there hasn’t been a single decision of the EU that hasn’t “elicited strong criticism from some political groups and NGOs”, from one side or the other.

To an extent; however it's worrying how quickly the far right have been normalised (c.f Meloni).

Maybe, but you'd have to look at the substance of each individual complaint before dismissing the lot of them (which seems to be the implication).

Alas! that seems to be the way of the world at the moment...
