  • From the report:
Later, a ‘concord of clergy’ puttered down the side aisle dressed in various garb. I thought correct vestments for evensong to be black cassock, surplice, and tippet (black preaching scarf). Some clergy had the cassock and surplice, but every member was wearing a purple stole around their necks, including the archbishop. I thought this was incorrect, but maybe times have changed.

@Tracker, I raised this very question in the thread on the MW report on Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s funeral.. You can see in that thread what others had to say.

I thought of it today, when I attended a funeral in a nearby Episcopal church. The rector, who gave the homily and led the prayers and the commendation, wore cassock, surplice and white stole. The bishop, who read the Gospel and gave the blessing, wore rochet, chimere and white stole. (An assistant rector who also participated wore cassock and surplice, with no stole or tippet.)

    FWIW.

Surplice and stole is just about acceptable, but a stole with rochet and chimere is an abomination that makes the Baby Jesus cry

Hello Nick: Thanks for your suggestion. I wasn't a MW when you wrote your previous report on O'Connor's funeral. I will now go and read it!

Just to clarify, I didn’t write that MW report. I just raised the same question in response to that report.
