  • Three syllables?

And you are proud of that?

    'Do not go ...
    Old age should ...
    Rage, rage, ag ...'
  • There is the villanette:

    The little villanette,
    Much shorter than a villanelle,
    Expresses brief regret;
    A single epithet,
On which we do not need to dwell.

  • I'm pretty Good at painting miniatures for historical wargames but less celebrated are my Subbuteo teams. I have painted quite a few for friends and family and they always go down a treat. Mainly 1960s and 70s to avoid horrible adverts on the shirts.

    Dukla Prague away kit?

I hope so - with the goalie wearing (a slightly eccentric choice of) Joy Division oven gloves

Such (gloves) are actually available on ebay, and I know someone who might actually find that funny. Although I wouldn't normally buy my mates a Christmas present, the opportunity seems too good to miss.

Back on topic - I am better at saving old shite in order to make a resourceful if idiosyncratic repair, than I am at retaining a career and the associated income to pay someone else to do it properly.

I have an amazing memory for dates. Play a song or talk about an event and I can probably tell, you which year it’s from

I can relate to that; some of my family have been known to phone me to settle an argument about when something happened, in some cases before I was born.

The other odd thing I'd say I'm good at is cryptic crosswords, and in particular, clues with anagrams: I'm often able to spot the word even without writing it out in a circle (the conventional method of solving an anagram).

I have recently worked out how to stop an imminent sneeze. (in myself that is!) Useful in some social situations!
  • I have a talent for making people laugh.

(Sadly, it is balanced by a tendency to bore people to death when I rattle on about one of my pet subjects,)

I was taught in high-school biology class to place your finger under your nose, as seen in cartoons. Apparently, this blocks the nerve impulse.

I was also taught by a waiter that you can stop hiccups by placing a spoon in a glass of water, and drinking the water with the handle of the spoon pressing against your forehead. I assume this works if you just touch your forehead in the right spot while drinking the water.

    What are your pet subjects?

  • What are your pet subjects?

    Without going into fine detail:

Medieval history (especially 14/15th century England.)
    Railway history.
    Proper beer.

Believe me, I can bore for England on any of these. And if you get me onto my favourite medieval people - well, I can rattle on for hours. So it's better not to unless you are really, really interested.

I'd take you up on that... but anything under 5%, I don't want to drink it... https://youtu.be/awHzXlUCBNM?si=zWJEq0qltBJnzQ4L

I have very little knowledge of all three but would love to chat to you about them...

There is something compelling about listening to enthusiasts on almost any topic. Besides they are all interesting.

  • I am not great at tech, but I am pleased with myself for a) noticing that I had no new e-mails coming through on my phone - I checked on my laptop where there are new ones, and b) ( eventually) resolved the problem. I had updated my BT password on my laptop and needed to do the same on my phone.
I relied on Mr Puzzler to solve my techie problems, so it has been a learning curve.

Do you read the railway thread? That’s full of arcane discussion between consenting adults…

I have made it into an art form.

I’m very good at a sense of place/orientation and a sense of direction . I almost always have a sense of north-south-east-west, even in an unfamiliar place.

And I can generally get from point A to point B with little trouble, again even if in an unfamiliar place. My wife claims to be amazed that we can go to a city we’ve never been to, and I have no trouble getting wherever we want to go. And she doesn’t find “well, I did look at a map on the plane” to be an adequate explanation.

  • I'm very good at recognising people by their voices (eg when a customer phones the library where I work)...which is good because I'm really rubbish at recognising people by sight....if they've changed their hairstyle or got new glasses it's enough to throw me, and if I see someone I'm acquainted with in an unexpected place I wont recognise them.

I'm also rather good at harmonising on the fly when singing...even if the song is unfamiliar and I've never seen the music

I'm very very good at being late but not proud of that particular skill!

There are so many of us, but it's hard to organize club meetings as we never recognize the people who showed up last month.
