Holiday Mishaps

One year, the afternoon before Thanksgiving, the refrigerator stopped working. No repairman was available. Thankfully, at the time, I was living in a ski resort, so I packed everything in snow.

  • All set to return to Ontario from New York on Saturday, and late last night- Thursday - the Google calendar announced that we were leaving in the morning. Eh? Checked, and right enough, the electronic ticket said we were booked on Friday. Via Rail Canada actually has friendly, helpful humans on duty late at night and the panic was sorted in a couple of minutes.

Hope the lake effect storms won't impact you.
  • I put lights on an evergreen tree in my back yard. Tested them out...and the top string was not working. I had tested each strand before putting it on, but when I examined the malfunctioning strand, I found a squirrel had chewed through the wiring. Two theories: (1) the squirrel chewed on it while I was putting on the other strands (HIGHLY unlikely) or (2) it was damaged before from last year but the failure didn't occur until I stretched the strand around the tree this year.

In any event, I had a replacement strand that I could use, but replacing the top strand was, of course, the most difficult one to replace. But it is done and the tree is lit.
  • And my run of luck continues. I finally got up my courage to go to the shopping mall (despite knowing it would be overcrowded). I wanted to pick up some items from a specialty store there. Got to the mall, found a parking space--that was just about as far from the doors it was possible to get. Took the hike into the mall...only to find that the store had closed. Now it was there 2 months ago. I saw it. But no sign of it today. So I turned around and hiked back to the car.

Time to come up with Plan B.

We got through Buffalo and thence to home yesterday evening with just a dusting of snow. It's a bit different today!
