I like that idea - thank you @March Hare .

A busy day out and about and hotfooting it back for a zoom meeting this afternoon, and another this evening. Weather bright and cold. Salmon and roasted vegetables for tea.
  • Enough sun, and just about enough air movement to dry a load of towels on the line in the garden.
Well, to almost dry them, enough dampness left in them for it not to be sensible to fold them and put them away immediately, so they are now on a couple of airing racks and will be properly dry before bedtime.

Other than that I got the sewing machine out for the first time in I don't know how long, and tackled some mending.

Off shortly for my third event today. Exercise group, u3a Scrabble group and choir. I’m shattered already. Twelve events in seven days. The dentist has just texted me wanting me to go on Friday instead of Friday next week. No can do.

Two times well done @Roseofsharon !

I'm in a Facebook group called 'The washing line appreciation society'. It's really enjoyable and interesting (honest!) There are 40k members from all over the world. We simply share photos of our washing lines. Mine are under a lean-to, so my washing goes out in all weathers.

I now have a functioning, closed window in the kitchen. Apparently what happened was that the offending gust of wind blew it in such a way that the little catch thingie engaged itself, locking it in an open position, which I was too short (and too short-sighted) to see. He not only managed to close it, but turned it back on itself and cleaned the outside (which had been dive-bombed by an evil-minded seagull some time ago), and wouldn't take any money for his trouble. I'm now looking forward to my electricity lasting a bit longer than it has been of late. :)

He also reckoned the windows would probably last another 20 years at least.

    I love Linlithgow tradesmen!

Once he'd gone, supper was fish cakes with greens and potato salad.
  • If anyone has a good, trusted buttery recipe, I'd be interested to see it.

I've just posted one in the Food & Drink thread for you. link.

I printed it out before going to bed last night and later was dreaming about it!
  • Much less fattening than eating them!
  • A mild and drizzly day in Arkland the Dull, with much Work going on adjacent to the Ark as Neighbour F unloads yet another load of enormous pallets. He has to dismantle them before carting the lengths of timber (by hand) along the walkway to his own Ark.

With the gracious permission of the Owner of Arkland, F is busy extending and repairing the jetty next to his Ark, to make access easier, and to give more space for the storage of Coal...

He's already completed an impressive Shed - a good 16 feet long by about 6 feet wide - with door, windows, and lighting, all for the grand sum of about £100! He jokes about building another floor on top of it, but I wouldn't put it past him.

Co-Op visited for CRUMPETS and HAM, also BEER, and the Office visited to pay the rent, and to collect a parcel. I now have a nice Woolly Hat to keep my pore old bald Head warm  .

Lunch is SALMON FILLETS and a few CHIPS.

A nice day of lip reading class followed by lunch with my husband and then bookshop shift. Between the lunch and the bookshop I mooched round Specsavers with my husband to help him chose some new specs ahead of an appointment later this afternoon. I'm not at all sure he went for the ones I thought suited him.
Tea will be chickpea and swede curry before I head to nearby minster town for a meeting of local environmental groups. It is also said towns Christmas shopping evening so I'm hoping I get time to have a quick look in a couple of shops before the meeting.
Thanks for the butteries recipe @Celtic Knotweed. It sounds far too dangerous a recipe for me to try as I'd probably scoff the lot.

Brrr it's cold. This afternoon I took Captain P to the park. He was romping about with his little friends and not feeling the cold particularly, but I was sitting on a bench not doing anything much, and I was thoroughly refrigerated when we got in. With the aid of warm slippers and a hot drink I am now more or less thawed out.

The day started alarmingly. Husband had been having abdominal/lower back pain for a couple of days, which he thought was a kidney stone (he's had them before). This morning the painkillers weren't making it better, so he betook himself to the Emergency department. Where they did a shed load of tests, if I understand correctly, looking for an intestinal obstruction. Finally they've decided it's nothing more serious than inflammation, and they're sending him home with the treatment. Whether I make it to the orchestra tonight remains to be seen.

This former-sort-of Canadian is sending you a big wave, Caissa - elbows up! :)

La Vie - hope M en rouge's treatment has the desired effect and he feels better v. soon.

Busy and somewhat interesting day at work; we had a meeting at which the two senior partners announced that from spring next year, they're going to start winding down to retirement. One is a year younger than me, and already down to three days a week; the other (my best friend's husband, whose great-grandfather founded the firm in 1919) is a little younger, and his wife has recently taken early retirement: he's planning on going down to three days a week as well. It all seems to be very well-thought-out; there'll be no sudden "there's nobody running the show" moments, and we were assured that none of our jobs was in any danger, which is comforting!

Supper was Piglet's Pancetta Pasta; it was a wee while since I'd had it, and it was rather nice.

    ETA:

@Sandemaniac - sorry about the rejection - prayers ascending!

@Sarasa - you've just reminded me - it was our Christmas shopping night here too, and I completely forgot about it. It had been a busy, scunnery sort of day, and I'd stopped in to get something finished, so by the time I left I just wanted to get home.

Cold comfort but if that is how they are with people it may well prove to be a lucky escape.

    Will be praying for you.
  • It's all a bit concerty over the next few days. Got the music centre end of term one tomorrow with the kids orchestra I co-lead (the littlest twanglet is playing trombone). Off out on Saturday to see a local lot play the rite of spring. Plus a family trip to a national trust place.
Thai green curry this evening in honour of the middle twanglet returning for the weekend (to help get the festive Dec's up)

I used to have a fat binder and a floppy disc of this stuff when my job-hunting was at its peak. It was a good day when I said, "To hell with this" and threw everything out. Not a trace survives. Memorably, I think there were three PFO letters altogether that told me there had been a reorganisation, and the position for which I had applied no longer existed. I assumed it was the sender's way of salving their conscience.
  • NenyaNenya All Saints Host, Ecclesiantics & MW Host
Very sorry to hear that @Sandemaniac .

I hope M en rouge feels much better very soon. Also that Captain P's recovery continues well.

It seems early to me to have an end of term concert @Twangist but I hope all goes well and you enjoy getting the decorations up. I have mixed feeling about ours as I love Christmas and as this one may be the last in this house I want to make it a lovely time of celebration. However, it looks at the moment as though Mr Nen and I could be on our own on the day so I'm torn between devising ways of doing things differently and making it special and not bothering at all and dishing up Marmite sandwiches.

On a happier note, we spent the day with Nenlet1 and the GrandNenling, who was on very good form.

Drop by any time @Caissa , the kettle is always on. *hands Caissa steaming mug of tea and plate of biscuits*

It was our turn to bake for our church's Drop In and I think we may have finally nailed it. The aim is to have a nice plate of home baking, but usually I spot the negative too late. Today the NE Man made Empire biscuits, and I made a tea-loaf, lemon drizzle cupcakes and chocolate tiffin cut into triangular pieces. So we nailed the variety of flavours, avoided everything being too sweet, nailed the different colours, nailed the different shapes, and nailed the different textures.

Usually I end up thinking "damn! everything's circular!" or "damn! everything is a shade of brown! " but today I think we ticked all the boxes.

Also, there are some things you can't bake because there is an acknowledged champion in the church, and any attempt will be compared unfavourably. So I know I can't compete with Sheila's shortbread, or Fiona's Marshmallow Roll, or Elma's tablet etc etc. And I can usually look at a plate of home baking and know who produced it, because it will include their Signature Bake.

A couple of months ago I discovered that my Tea Loaf has now reached the hallowed status of "best in church" so I had to make one for today as it is now my Signature Bake.

The NE Man has identified "Empire Biscuits" as having no current Acknowledged Best Baker in church, so he's focussing on those. This was his third batch, and the feedback from the last two was that he needed to abandon the glace cherries in favour of jelly sweeties. Today's were duly topped with sweeties, so he is hoping for acclaim. I'm not sure this is quite in the spirit of the thing, as most of the church bakers have produced dozens / hundreds of home bakes over many years, and generally the Signature Bake emerges gradually. But the NE Man is going for a "Work Smarter, Not Harder" approach to success.

It's deliberately early to avoid clashing with all the things that might occur during the silly season.

I hope this Christmas is truly joyful especially if it marks the end of an era for you.

Today was less busy than yesterday, partly because I cancelled a hair appointment as I decided it could wait another week or so, especially as I now have a dental check-up appointment tomorrow in what was a free morning. This has been unexpectedly brought forward as my NHS dentist is leaving next week. He is going to do private work. I am sad as he is really good.

I walked into town and amongst other things I picked up a meal deal ( £10 for two mains, a side dish and a bottle of wine) from the Co-op but was charged full price. By the time it was sorted I had just missed a bus so had to wait for the next one as my shopping was too heavy for me to walk home.
Choir practice tonight at church, preparing for the Carol Service. Tomorrow: dentist and French conversation group.
  • We have been to an outstanding orchestral concert, preceded by an excellent Italian meal at a nearby restaurant.

I'm just back from a bi-annual meeting of various 'green' groups in the area. It is such a shame that the average age of the attendees appeared to be about 75. A few interesting things came out but I do wish people would make their points succinctly and speak up. The one person I wanted to talk to at the end had been button-holed by someone else but my friend giving me a lift knows him and will get his contact details for me.
Tomorrow I have a load of disparate things to do in own so I've made myself a list so I don't forget any of them.

We've got the local Advent Fair tomorrow: St Pete's is going to be open, offering mulled wine (real or alcohol-free), mince pies and shortbread, and a raffle for sundry alcoholic beverages and a festive hamper. I picked up a few boxes of mince pies in Tessie's at lunch time, and have left all but one of them in to the church. As I'll be there for choir practice before we open, I'll probably end up helping out with serving up.

I'm off on Monday, using up the last of this year's leave, and was happy to leave an empty in-floor for my colleague who does the typing when I'm not there.

Supper was, as usual on a Friday, f&c and very nice. I must put another bottle of WINE into the fridge ...

Sorry to hear of the continued recruitment stress, Sandemaniac.

A productive few days. I had been worried about my progress with my studies (I hadn’t managed to write anything for over 3 weeks due to my marking workload) as I had self-imposed deadline to finish the introduction chapter by the end of the month and had only written 800 words. But I managed to get time to look at it yesterday and realised that I could re-purpose most of my research proposal for the rest of the chapter. So I am now over my allotted word count and just need to reference it all next week.
This morning I did the usual admin, continued ongoing planning with a colleague about a tutorial on young people, practitioners and community, and presented a recorded student mental health tutorial. This afternoon I did yet more marking. I am looking forward to the weekend.
Tea will be a raised pie (pork I think) made by Mr Heavenly yesterday, served with mushrooms and spinach in a cream sauce.
  • All quiet in Arkland the Apprehensive, where today's mild Sun-Shine is due to be replaced by Monday with Storm, Tempest, Wind, and Rain - all 'set to batter the county', as the saying is.
    :scream:

A visit to the village Co-Op will be essayed tomorrow, in advance of the Storm etc. etc., as BREAD and MEAT are required, also MARMITE.
    :yum:

Neighbour F has delivered the Coal, and will unload it from his trailer tomorrow, hopefully with some help from his Sons, and anyone else who can be press-ganged into the work...

A cold, windy day here which I was glad to be able to spend indoors after various outings during the week - not least, obviously, to the hospital on Wednesday to receive a cancer diagnosis.

Started a tricky linocut (lots of thin lines).

Dinner a classic of sole in a lemon cream sauce with asparagus.

  • I am having a lazy week. Only going out for absolute essentials.

Today, my new computer arrived. I was carrying it upstairs when, halfway up, it slipped out of my hands and rolled all the way down to the bottom. Luckily, when I recovered it and plugged it in, it worked perfectly. Phew!

The glazed panel at the foot of the stairs, however... Looks like a brick went through it. Luckily, it is within an enclosed porch, but I have still had to contact a glazier.

Phew about the computer @Sighthound, but annoying to have to replace the glass at the bottom of the stairs.
Even though I couldn't eat it your dinner sounds delicious @Firenze. I hope after this week's news it was washed down with a suitable wine.
Glad you've got the coal sorted @Bishops Finger and yeah for getting where you wanted to with your studies @Heavenlyannie.
My morning in town was successful. I got my problem over my hacked card sorted. The bank are great face to face, just a pain that I'll have yet another new card. Due to problems with the arrival the one I got in the summer I think I had about three in quick succession. I also picked up the book I ordered for my husband's birthday, the trousers I had shortened, which are now the right length, and the ingredients for tonight's tea (pasta with harissa pesto and roasted tomatoes with a bottle of red). I staggered home under the weight of my various purchases for a lazy afternoon and evening.

I said a sad farewell to my lovely NHS dentist today. He has got married and is living too far away to continue, but will do a private session on Saturdays. I might be tempted to book, if he is not replaced at the practice.

This evening I spoke to my granddaughter who is kindly going to sort the transport for my guests on Sunday. What a star!
Tomorrow my cousin and his wife are arriving. We are meeting up in the afternoon if their trains are not delayed, but they have booked into a hotel, so I get the pleasure of seeing them but not the work.
  • BREAD and MEAT are required, also MARMITE.

    Most definitely an essential!!!

  • Yes indeed.

As an experiment, I tried Vegemite this morning, but have thrown the disgusting Paste Of Satan in the bin...

One of my Cousins recommended it. I shall have Words with him when he next calls me.
  • How thick did you spread it @Bishops Finger ? It needs only the merest smear. It is one of my favourite snacks on crackers or a sandwich with a strongly-flavoured cheese.
  • There are also supermarket own-brand "Marmites" and a souped-up special Marmite, neither of which I've tried.

Thank you. I hope so too; just can't think at the moment of what it might look like - either by trying to do what we've always done for Old Times' Sake or by trying to do something different.

I hope the birthday celebrations go really well @Puzzler .

Thinking of you @Firenze and of Mr F.

I think I tried Vegemite once years ago. As I never buy it (but always have Marmite in the cupboard) I suspect it was one of those things that I vowed Never Again.

I had a good catch up with some friends yesterday, we had friends over for a meal last night (a very pleasant evening) and am out for coffee later this morning. The rain (heavy in the night) has stopped for now but looks as though it may start again at any moment.

Stir fry for tea because Saturday.
  • Very Marmite household here; Mr Heavenly loves it and I hate it!

Usual Saturday morning totter out for the paper and bits and pieces - including stock pots to feed my soup habit. And Jings but it's raw, finger-numbing, face-chewing, damp cold.

It'll be out with the Madhur Jaffrey this evening and a rip-snorting lamb curry.
  • Thank you all for your concern re my Vegemite experiment, which (thankfully) I survived.

I perhaps spread it a little too thick, but, even so, it was horrible. I suspect that even a smear would have put me off.

I have no intention of trying any 'own brand' versions of MARMITE, which must surely be an Abomination Before The Lord - if I get to the Co-Op this afternoon, they sell only the Proper Item.

Wet and windy in Arkland the Dishevelled, but it's supposed to be drier later today. I did think of trying to get to Tess Coe, but the Saturday traffic in Our Town is silly at this 'festive' time of year. Hah Bumhug.

An early start this morning, as we had to be at the Nearest Town by 8.30 to help put up the Nativity scene. I was of limited use as, apart from a lamb, all the figures were too heavy for me to move. Fortunately there were eight of us, so plenty of volunteers. I ended up litter picking round the area.

The NE Man thoroughly enjoyed getting stuck in. It's the first year we've been involved as it's not the sort of thing the NE Man had time for when he was working.

Great fun and very convivial. It was absolutely freezing though!
