The Changing role of men in society

The last time something like this was started it got high jacked and was more about the patriarchy than about the actual subject. Please can we stick to the subject. The patriarchy is part of it but only part.

The role of men in society, particularly western society has seen many changes. It is not the same as in my grandfather or even my father’s time. What has changed and for good or not.

Maybe you could start things off by telling us what YOU think are some things that have changed?

Oh my. I'm a 54 year-old man, and I'm already struggling with the phrase "role of men in society." LOL. Maybe I should let this thread develop for a while before musing much aloud.

Might want to change the humorous typo in the title.

In an ideal world, the role of men would be the same as the role of women and non-binary people.

But, it's not an ideal world. For too long men have oppressed women and others, we took a position of power over others that we shouldn't have, and used it to abuse others. Therefore, the role of men should be to yield the power we've stolen, and make amends for our sins against women and non-binary people.

But, how that's done is for the women and non-binary people to say. So, with that all men need to shut the f*** up and listen for a change.

I am not even that far. I am puzzling over what is meant by having a "role in society" by itself. For that matter, what boundaries are being put on the meaning of the word "society"? Society as in a neighborhood? A city? A country? A world? Does the military, for example, have a "role" in protecting (offensively and/or defensively) a society from a different society, or just protecting one part of society from another part of society? Depending on the parameters of "society" the parameters of what constitutes a "role" in that "society" might change (the military, for example, may have little or no role in a neighborhood society).

Please do not make unkind remarks about a spelling mistake by a poster who has made no secret of his dyslexia.

I am correcting the thread title.

As a woman, I don’t agree that men need to make amends. I don’t know why every time an injustice is addressed the pendulum has to swing so far the other way that more injustice is being done. Why shouldn’t men’s voices be heard?

As I grew up it was considered normal for men to go to work and for wives to look after the home and family. Children came along, they were not usually planned, and it was the mother who tended to look after them. There were all kinds of things wrong with that, it was not a utopia and I’m thankful that it all changed. People went along with it because it was the cultural norm. Now it’s not, and I’m glad.

In an ideal world the role of men would be the same as anyone else, there I do agree. Cultural change takes time, but when it’s for the better it’s worth it.

Men as men have no role in today's society. But young men seem to want a role, and when the society at large can't or won't give them one, they turn to bad actors like Andrew Tate, spit be upon his name. Are the sexes and genders just societally indistinguishable? This is something we still have to work out, I think.

I’m going to pause this thread here pending consideration. What has changed is not a problematic discussion. I can’t see at the moment how “whether it is good or not” can avoid talking about its impact on women as well, and the issues of patriarchy- which takes it straight into Epiphanies territory.

It is nearly midnight here, and I have a very full RL morning tomorrow, so please don’t hold your breath for developments, unless other Hosts or Admins have time to respond sooner.
