Trump officially Fucks Trans Kids

There is an ongoing discussion how Transkids are being fucked over in the UK. Thought I would start a similar thread about the US.

Trump henceforth has proclaimed there are only two genders in the US and has signed an executive order to that effect.

No doubt it is going to be challenged if not already.

But, it's not only happening in the UK. We do not have to look beyond our shores. I would say 25 states agree with him. But there are a number of other states that will defend the rights of transkids.

Talk about a dictator for a day.

Here is a summary of the order:

Among its many provisions, the document seeks to redefine gender at the federal level, erase recognition of trans people in government communications, cease the issuance of gender-corrected U.S. passports, bar incarcerated trans women from being housed in women’s prisons, deny gender-affirming medical care to trans inmates, embolden transphobia in the workplace, and block federal dollars from being used to “promote gender ideology.” https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/defending-women-from-gender-ideology-extremism-and-restoring-biological-truth-to-the-federal-government/

Here is a portion of the LAMBDA Legal response:
“These executive orders include direct attacks on LGBTQ+ communities, particularly transgender people, youth, and families whose lives, dignity, and safety would be further jeopardized in this fraught moment when over two dozen states have already passed anti-LGBTQ+ laws since 2022. The Trump administration is targeting, among others: transgender and intersex people, especially youth, denying them access to essential public facilities, school programs, and the same medically recommended health care that is readily available to their cisgender peers; anti-bias programming and protections in the workplace; and transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people who only seek to have accurate identity documents. The impact of these executive actions will be devastating—stripping away health care access, weakening workplace protections from abuse, inviting exclusion and harassment of vulnerable school children, and giving a green light to discrimination throughout public life."

Personally speaking, our daughter identifies as bisexual. Our congregation is open and affirming (known as Reconciling in Christ in Lutheran circles). So we have a stake in this fight.

I mentioned this on the other thread in response to Trudy who was asking about the situation in both the US and UK but it might also be useful here

For trans journalism by trans journalists in the US I usually go to Assigned Media and here is what they say about Trump's inauguration and what they advise:

    https://www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-news/inauguration-day

(They were originally set up by Evan Urquhart. He's on hiatus at the moment but his personal account on Bluesky is worth following
    https://bsky.app/profile/evanurquhart.bsky.social
But you need to be logged in there to see it.

Lots of trans folk were early adopters of Bluesky because of the situation on Twitter and because the moderation and blocking tools there are relatively good ( though not perfect) So it's quite a good place to find trans people talking about this.)

I set up bluesky to see the link. Thanks

Charlotte Clymer is one of the trans writers and activists from whom I’ve learned the most, so I was interested in her thoughts and found this essay insightful as usual (especially interesting to me as she writes from the perspective of a transgender Christian):

Erin Reed is a trans journalist whose work I also enjoy: she has a very detailed breakdown here of Trump’s anti-trans executive order:

    https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/a-line-by-line-analysis-of-trumps

As someone with a young trans family member, and as someone who works in a community agency that serves many trans and nonbinary youth among others, I find Trump’s statements and executive order deeply troubling. I’m not in the US so there’s no direct legal impact on anyone in my immediate circle, but the impact of him saying “only two genders” and introducing this EO so openly is chilling for everyone who cares about trans folks, and of course even more for trans and people themselves.

In the first Trump term there was still a sense that such sentiments had to be soft-pedalled, that there had to be a veneer of saying “well of course we respect everyone’s rights but ….” Now that’s gone and it’s clear that everyone from the US president to the school bully can attack trans people.

I’ve seen the trickle-down impact of these attitudes at my work, where the young people most likely to be Trump supporters (the Maple MAGA crowd as we sometimes call them here in Canada) have made offensive comments about trans people in spaces where some of our trans students have to hear them. I expect those comments to be more frequent and open in the new era of Trump 2.

While those most in danger are in the US, when Trump won I had to help their father find comforting words for a young non binary person in the UK who was horrified and upset - so yes it definitely makes waves round the world and makes things worse for people.

I am hoping that Amendment 14 will be a sufficient defence to this undoubted attack on the human rights of those who do not fit into the binary assertion. Has Trump exceeded his constitutional authority re this executive order?

With any previous Supreme Court in the last 60 years I am sure the answer would be a resounding yes. But not with this one.

I missed the edit window to say "veneer" instead of "vender," but hopefully my meaning was clear.

I think he most definitely has exceeded his authority, but like you, who knows with the current SCOTUS.

That said, I think even with this SCOTUS, he’ll have a hard time with his citizenship EO. The Constitution is clear on that point.

I have multiple queer friends who are literally posting on social media that they think these changes (and the medical ones) will kill them either sooner or later. This is a terrifying time. If you are cis and you have trans friends in the U.S., check on them.

Yes! I was doing just that this evening with a young trans female friend. She's only 22 years old. I'm so worried about her and a bunch of my friends and have been letting them know that I'll be checking on them a lot.

This evil has to be stopped somehow.

  • Finally got a chance to read the actual order. It is shockingly thoroughgoing in its sociopathy.

"Shockingly thoroughgoing in [their] sociopathy" is an excellent description of the GOP right now.

And now he's gone after transgender members of the military. Lord have mercy on us all.

Wanders off to check on a few people ...
  • Jennifer Finney Boylan has a nice personal essay in the Post today, a bit of a reprieve from the general doom and gloom:

  • Bumping this back up.

This past week, Trump got into a tete d' tete with the governor of Maine over Maine's law which would allow transkids to play in a sport of their choosing regardless of sex identity. It is all about the interpretation of title IX of the Federal Education funding. Title IX essentially prohibits schools receiving federal funds from discriminating based on sex. The Maine law states transgender identity is a protected class against discrimination in employment, housing, education, extension of credit or access to public accommodations.

The previous administration said transkids could not be discriminated against under Title IX, the current administration says Maine, and other states too, are allowing males to participate in girls' sports which is discriminatory.

Now. the Trump Department of Education has launched an investigation against Maine under their interpretation of Title IX.

This could lead to a case that could go all the way to SCOTUS.

Anyone want to make a bet on who will win?
