The sign NO TOURISTS did not mean that anyone visiting from another town, country, religion or culture was not welcome.
It simply means that you should not be walking around discussing things or taking photographs when a service is in progress..
As you said the tourists showed up anyway so they cannot have been put off by the sign.
Of course it is difficult if you don't understand the language but you should also remember that the format of the Mass would be extremely familiar to anyone who was Catholic and that they would not need a book to follow.
Hope you saw the relics of St Andrew in the crypt.

Or Anglican, or Lutheran, or just about any Western tradition that cherishes liturgy. The cathedral sounds like a beautiful place. I would love to visit should I ever find myself in Italy.
  • So would I - but I can only walk with the help of two crutches. However would I get into the Cathedral, even though I can understand some Italian, and know the general format of the Mass?

The desire to inhibit casual sightseeing during Mass is understandable, of course...

I don’t know of I’ve misread this, but the reporter’s main gripe seems to be because the regular congregation were speaking in their own language.

I can heartily recommend Universalis. Its an app that has the full text of every day's mass and readings in many European languages alongside the English translation. We regularly use it when abroad - and at home.

  • I've sometimes used Universalis as the source/inspiration for the intercessions at the Parish Mass (though Our Place is Anglican), and found it refreshingly un-wordy.
