Spammer banned

Some of you may have noticed a plethora of junk threads started by a new poster - and that the threads have now vanished. I have banned the spammer - and given the massive amount of drek, I chose the option to delete their content at the same time.

    They started around 4pm BST, I and @jedijudy played whack-a-mole with their threads in Heaven before @Doublethink nuked the account. 30 minutes start to finish by my reckoning.

    My only point of sadness at the fast work of our dedicated admin team is that we don't get to see posts with a gator munching a troll as the avatar anymore.

    May I ask, what was the nature of the deleted threads? Were they purporting to discuss typical Ship topics? Or selling something? Or just I coherent nonsense? Or...?

    At best sales spam, but without clicking on them I suppose potentially sales scam spam.

    There were a *lot* of them.

    The latter two (simultaneously). At least the ones in English(ish) were.

    An added problem with posts in, what looked like, Arabic is that we don’t know what they were saying. Which in the current context of world affairs is legally unsafe.

    But irrc it all looked like sales spam, totally unrelated to the forum themes, it was probably a bot rather than a person.

    They appeared to be selling abortion pills. Which suggested to me that they had no idea of the dominant demographics of the board!

    Ah, but the 'gator had refined tastes and wouldn't blunt her teeth on a McD variety spamming troll. She lay in wait for the rare* troll who took some effort to try and appear to fit in, who would skirt the edge of what's acceptable until one day they slipped and let their trollery be evident to all, at which point she would pounce with lethal finality.

    * as in both uncommon and not cooked so much that there's no flavour or texture left.

    I saw a couple of the posts and pasted the text into Google translate -- it was indeed Arabic, and the posts were selling abortion pills either from or to Dubai (I can't remember now).

    As much as I complain about the interference of moderators and the administrator, this was a case where the crew did the right thing. I am surprised SOF is not being assaulted more regularly with this stuff--or maybe it is, and I am not aware of it.

    There would be more of them but admin watches for that and doesn't approve accounts that are obviously spammers.
