Where is Martin54?

I'm curious. Has he left the Ship?

    Thank you

Coincidentally, I was just thinking about him this morning. Thanks for the post, Doublethink.
  • His three-month suspension must have expired by now, so maybe he's decided to stay on shore. That, of course, is entirely his business, but the Ship seems somehow less colourful IYSWIM without him...

I have also wondered where he is.
  • There may, of course, be some Personal Stuff going on, to which the H&As are privy, but which is none of our business.

That's a shame. I think if I were told I needed to convince the crew I was worth having on board, I wouldn't return, because if I were already considered to have no worth, I wouldn't think anything I would say could rectify that, and it would feel dehumanising to beg my worth. I hope he comes back though.

Sure, but that's you. That Martin54 had no problem imposing sizeable burdens on people trying to decipher his posts and even larger burdens on the crew suggests that he is convinced of the worthiness of his contributions.

The crew had put up with Martin’s disruptive antics for a long, long time, and with remarkable patience. He was given chance after chance after chance, and he returned those repeated chances with regular disrespect to others and regular violation of the Ship’s commandments.

As for “you’re entitled to get in touch and try to convince us that you’re worth having back on board,” I read that to mean he could try to convince the crew that his positive contributions to discussions on the Ship would not be dwarfed by the ongoing extra work and need for attention he created for the admins and mods, or the regular derailment of threads he caused.

Yes, I know that's me - that's why I worded it in those terms rather than assuming to know how Martin would take it. Yours is an interesting interpretation, Ruth, but I'd say there could be a variety of reasons and we simply don't know.

To clarify, I'm not defending or blaming anyone. Just expressing that I personally think it's a shame, as I often enjoyed his posts. And expressing that the wording of the post suspending him might be such that makes it hard to return, and so that might be why he hasn't. I don't know, and I know different people interpret things differently.

I have no love for him as he was personally abusive to me on multiple occasions. He didn't seem misunderstood to me, nor misunderstanding.

If he asked to come back I'd put him on post approval. Work for hosts, but less work than the confusion and hurt he often brought.

It's not him it's his posts that are/were the problem.

Unlike speech, typing gives us thinking time. Martin54 is asked to use that think to prevent confusion and hurt. That's all. Easy if motivated imo.

All societies set their own rules of behaviour, their justifications for those rules, the means of their enforcement.

This is not the place to be commenting on how someone posts, whether or not they were abusive or anything else that would come under the general category of personal comment.

And, there's no place on the Ship to do that about someone who is not currently here to respond.

    So, please stop.

The best part of these discussion fora is the relatively wide array of personalities and points of view that have enough common ground to share and compare ideas.

The worst part of these discussion fora is how so many posters seem to entirely project themselves or a simple external narrative, complete with extrapolation about right versus wrong based entirely on those handy little mental fictions.

"But I like them!" or "You just don't understand - they're not really an asshole" are not meaningful or useful.

Sincerely, I stand before you - an asshole - and un-banned simply because I can follow rules and directions sufficient to make the Crew's lives easier. Or, at least, I don't cause quite enough problems to impair them from floating this collection of narrow-minded badgers who apparently lack the basic affability required to engage with real social media or friends to hash out every random thought that crosses their heads.

What are these things, or beings, called friends of which you speak...?

Seriously, though, I trust that @Martin54 is aware of the fact that some folk are asking after him, and hoping that he is (IRL) OK.

On that note, I think we’ll close this thread.
