28c now, rising to 30c (feels like 32) later.
We’re ok, indoors fan on through breeze.

The main issue I have as a non-driver is when bus stops are totally exposed to the glaring sun - either because of the position of the sun or because they're the type without a bus shelter. I think I need one of the UV-protection parasols just so I always have some shade. It's still hot in the shade but being in full sun is painful in these temperatures - not due to burning, just the feeling of the heat.

It seems that Wimbledon is not affecting the weather adversely this year. You can normally rely on it to rain several times over the fortnight.

I went to this last night -

    The National Emergency Briefing film.

    Very informative.

A high of 29 or 30 depending on your source, but it’s staying that way until seven or so, although it might feel cooler if we get some cloud (cloud? What’s that?)

@KarlLB Drink in the shade. In Cyprus we found taxis would drive in the shade too, and the drivers would hold the roof on with the non-driving hand,

I'm permanently in the shade at the moment. I can't go outside for more than five minutes or so. Still sweating my bollocks off and constantly too hot.

The major interstate between Eastern Washington and Western Washington is closed because of a wildfire. The area that is burning is known for its cheat grass which burns as fast as spilled petro/gasoline when it catches fire.

Most bus stops in Los Angeles and Long Beach have no shelter. It's nuts. There are several near me that have a canopy, but it's not positioned to provide shade in the right place during the hottest part of the day. It's like they didn't even think about that. The LA Dept of Transportation commissioned a prototype for something they said would provide shade that's laughable -- shade for one small person, sort of, at most, for a few hours.

Most of the bus shelters around here keep rain off if you stand in the right area of about six square feet of a forty square foot shelter AND they are glazed, so no shade anyway. Although it’s open there are “no smoking or vaping” signs, to no avail..

I nearly missed a bus because I was standing in the shade a few feet away from the bus stop. It had a shelter but that was in full sun.

We've had the great idea here to make sure bus shots aren't too comfortable-literally--to make sure the homeless don't enjoy them. This means a max of two walls and they can't go all the way to the roof and all the way to the ground. Oh and very small seats to make sure no one sleeps on them.

And remember that our climate means that we get LOTS of sub-freezing weather and repeated summer weather where people will be vulnerable to heat. So of course besides the homeless not being comfortable in the bus shelters, the rest of us won't be either.

Unfortunately a lot of UK bus shelters have the same idea - often using sloping plastic perching seats that are really uncomfortable and often too high for someone my height to comfortably use without slipping off (because the seat doesn't match up to wear my butt is, but because the seat slopes you can't sit properly on it). Round here the shelters are usually the type with three sides that are open at the side nearest the road - OK if you just want to avoid some rain but otherwise pretty exposed to the elements. More rural bus stops often have a proper shelter (often like a little wooden hut) and bench, presumably because you might be waiting for longer for a bus. Sadly hostile architecture is common in the UK too.

@Ruth a lack of shade for bus stops in LA seems especially crazy. The linked prototype is so insulting, it would take basically no time to construct a basic canopy over the seats shown in the photo.
  • The only bus-shelter in Our Village is right outside the Anglican church, and (perhaps ironically) is shaded by the building, and by adjacent trees...

The 'seat' is a metal bar about 6 inches wide, so people sit on the low stone wall of the church grounds.

Crikey, 33c and it’s past 5pm. I think Pimms will follow the football tonight as we’re forecast 27c at 10pm.
  • A bit cooler in London, 31. Who would have thought of saying that a few years ago?

It’s almost surreal. It’s just been warming up all day and I’m waiting for some ground fires. The No Good Boyos have a reputation for fire starters.

All the Bastille fireworks displays in the department of the Tarn are cancelled by order of the prefect. They can't take the risk of them setting something on fire.

Officially too hot for Pimms on the Patio tonight.

One measure of heat is how long it takes clothes to dry. Note that I do not have a tumble dryer. Last load finished at 4:30pm. When I checked at 9pm, everything was bone dry.

That means it's not so humid there. When it was hot here, some 10 days ago, it was miserable because while 32C/90F was annoying enough the up to 80% humidity pushed it to feeling like at least 113F/45C! We had a few clothes hanging that became moldy instead of drying.

While Embra hasn't been that hot comparatively - mid 20s - it's still felt, on top of the continuing chemozonk, like wear an extra heavy overcoat. However this morning there's the Forth Valley biteback - a heavy haar, and nothing over 17°C.

It's a pity some of the excess heat can't be sent south = it's cold here.
  • sionisaissionisais Shipmate
The heat zone appears to have moved west.. The south and east look almost bearable today.

With the emphasis on 'almost'. We had a longish meeting in the nave of our (ancient) church today. Even there it was warm, uncomfortably warm.
    Oh for some relief!
  • Cooler here in Arkland - about 72F, with an east-north-east breeze - but feeling rather humid nonetheless...
    :disappointed:

Supposed to be cooler today, 32 in our flat, in London. We went for a walk, a bit of a breeze, but still torrid. I know I've been bad, but can my punishment end now?

Thunderstorm last night right over us, and since then grey, wet, cool. We might get to 17C tomorrow…. Anyone want to visit?
  • sionisaissionisais Shipmate
We love a good thunderstorm, just so long as they don’t cause any damage. Our experience is that they often clear the atmosphere and make it more comfortable.

Awful for places like the south of France which is so liable to fires.🙏🙏

Thunderstorms due here on Thursday apparently - can't come soon enough.

@Huia according to my Brazilian friend, El Niño is responsible for the Southern Hemisphere being so cold and wet while the Northern Hemisphere burns. Certainly my South American friends generally are having a miserable winter.
