Strange Conversations

Have you ever had s strange conversation with someone? Today I was out walking my dog. Someone who lives in my area, but I do not really know, stopped her car by me and asked, "Are you the one who collects food for the food bank?" Me, "No." Her "You are not the one?" Me, "No I think it is a lady named Valorie." Her "So not you?" Me, "No, not me." She mumbled something and drove away.

Are you quite sure you're not Valorie?
  • I was deeply moved by a remark someone made to me at a church I was MWing. The date happened to be May 17. A woman sitting near me said the following: "May 17 - that's the day I was married. My husband has been gone a long time and I haven't thought of it in years. But I still have the best part of it - my son!"
  • The strangest one I had was with my mailman. I was out in the yard when he came down a neighbor's driveway. He called out, "It is good to see you are still around." Huh?
  • I was at a model railway show a few years ago when one of the other exhibitors, well known for his tact, remarked, "I... er.. thought you were dead". I had been somewhat unwell, but it wasn't quite that bad.
  • I once visited a restaurant I had visited often. On previous visits I had formed the impression that the proprietor recognized me.

On this particular day, he greeted me effusely and asked where the rest of my party was. I thought he was joking, as on each previous visit I had dined alone. Continuing what I thought was a joke, I told him that they had all canceled at the last minute. He became very upset!

I soon realized that the proprietor had mistaken me for someone else who had reserved for a large party, and for whom he had taken special pains to prepare.

    That party did eventually arrive.
  • I remember that when I was visiting Nova Scotia, I was walking out of own a short distance to a Tim Horton's, and I met a man coming the other way. He was tall and black, and I thought he was actually from Africa. He stopped and said, "You are a wise man". It was hard to know what to say, other than to be polite.
  • It was a family joke that’s my father would find someone who worked at ICI in Pontypool wherever we went on holiday, even in the Lake District
  • The strangest conversation I ever had was with The Princess Royal, or Princess Anne as she was at the time.
She was opening a care facility I was caterer for, and came into the kitchen for a few words. The conversation started off about the menu - normal enough, but continued, by way of curried eggs, to an experience she had in (I think, Thailand, but that I may have misremembered) when she was given a meal of egg that tasted of iron filings.

To this day I wonder occasionally when she had tasted iron filings to make the comparison.

I'm not sure what you mean here. A google on "ICI" just turns up the French word "ici".
  • Overheard upon entering the staff room at my place of employment decades ago...

FIRST WOMAN: So when I heard that, my respect for her just went...(hand gestures indicating "down the drain")

SECOND WOMAN: But you have to admit, that's pretty good foreplay.

ICI is/was a large chemical company in the UK. Not sure if it's still about now.

A few weeks ago, while on a short hike in the Northern Territory of Australia, I met someone who had grown up in the same small eastern North Carolina town (pop. ≈ 10k) as I did. She even knew my brother.

Imperial Chemical Industries, a British chemical company.
  • A family tradition was that my father had "been around" and knew just about everybody. This became evident after my mother died and I accompanied my father to the stonecutter's to select the gravestone.

As he was looking through the stonecutter's catalog, he began to recognize people's names on the tombstones pictured in the catalog. "Oh, he used to work for so-and-so," "oh, he lived on such-and-such a street for years before they tore down the house," "oh, she taught kindergarten at such-and-such a school."

Whether the names were actually of people he knew, or were coincidentally the same names, I never knew.
