The cleaning hasn't happened yet - although I have bought a shedload of Things To Do It With (the place could do with a wipe round, but isn't too bad); by the time we'd faffed about with trying to figure out the frankly antediluvian electricity meter* and phoned to arrange a quote for a new gas central heating system, time was getting on.

However, as well as the furniture I knew was being left, there's some crockery and cutlery and - hurrah! - a brand-new (still in the box) slow-cooker!

This makes me an inordinately happy piglet.

    * It's a key arrangement that you use to buy top-ups - I think it's just one step up from having to put a shilling in it ... :flushed:
  • Hooray for surprise slow cookers! I how the move goes well.

Yesterday was our anniversary so we had dinner in a posh pub in a Grantchester which was lovely.
I’m off for a walk and then doing a couple of hours study this morning (data analysis, I think). I need to get some chores done, catch up on laundry, do some gardening.
  • Thinking of you @Piglet as the Removal Bloke does his Stuff with your Stuff, into your squeaky clean new abode.

Regarding connections, after my neighbour cut my BT cable (Long story, he cant be argued with) I’ve been stuck with V*rgin who have been dire, recently leaving me for about 10 weeks with appalling service & no refund. I’d love to have a choice, but Openreach haven’t reached here and have no plans to.
  • Yesterday I came home from work to one of the deepest, most profound moments in a man's life.

    My new shed had arrived.

I'm assuming you had honey for tea; I believe they're very particular and won't let you in unless you agree to it.

Yay for unexpected slow cookers and man sheds!

Piglet, have you actually spent your first night in the new chateau yet?
  • Slow cookers (expected or otherwise )are A Good Thing!
  • My new shed had arrived.
Do you now have to erect it?

It is. And it will be pricey, I think. You'll need to get a new contract with an ordinary meter (actually it'll be a Smart Meter). Worth shopping around and also looking for dual fuel options if you have gas as well.

The last time I came across one of those key things was when I was in my twenties and the electricity provider didn't think I'd pay my bill otherwise Managed to get it sorted to standing order. Hope you can get yours sorted soon @piglet. The slow cooker seems a bonus though.
  • A new shed is a thing of wonder and delight....

While a brand new slow cooker is surely the same.

What a lovely weekend so far!

I do plan on having an erection in the garden, once the builder has laid the base for me.

The pub is called ‘The Rupert Brooke’ :)
  • Sandemaniac, did you mean to say that or do I need brain bleach?

This. Key or card pre-pay/top-up meters are hugely more expensive than a normal meter and aren't good for credit ratings either. It might be difficult to get it replaced - you'll need to prove that you're not the previous owner! - but persist. It's only a small thing, though. Enjoy your new home!

If it was an outrageous single entendre than yes, I did mean to say it. I was recently petitioned by a group of lavatories, who felt themselves denigrated by comparison with my sense of humour.

  • Saturday nights after clearing up from the vigil mass I go to a local cafe for a meal. Very good food at prices that would be cheap for average food. Now they are talking of cooking for the homeless.
  • O Merrie England!
    :disappointed:

Good for them, though. They won't get any thanks from the *government*, which is rapidly being shown up for the mean-spirited, greedy, heartless shower of unmentionables it is...

    Do they serve mead?
  • Happily, not; it’s foul stuff. When we do Tudor re-enactment, the brewers make small beer and add elderflower, which is far more pleasant.

Some friends of mine would, I think, consider those to be fighting words.
  • I don't like small beer. There's never enough of it.
  • I don't like beer.

    I like hell weißbier.

    (Hell means light)
  • A friend of mine and his wife were enthusiastic mead makers (is there a specific word for that?). Good friend that I am, I frequently sampled the fruit of their efforts. Different styles, strengths - all really quite good.

    I am so sorry 🕯

Lovely walk this morning, cold and sunny (torrential rain last night). Zoom church to start soon.

    Metheglinologist?

Ah! - So when you say to someone 'Go to hell!', you can claim you actually wish for them to go to the light (of God), to be enlightened - just bilingually.

    Nice. :)

Thanks, from the government, does not come into it. They have not got anything from any of the government schemes and have had to make most of their staff redundant.
  • My point exactly.
  • I don't like beer.

On Jordan's bank the Baptists cry.
If I were a Baptist so would I.
They drink no beer, they have no fun
    I'm glad I'm a Presbyterian!
  • In our hymnbook, the last sentence reads I'm glad I am an Anglican...

    I'll get me cassock...
  • I'm not forbidden beer - I just don't like it.

I do, however, like a good wine or cider. My wife (who doesn't care for beer herself) also likes G&T, single malt whisky, and a disgusting black Hungarian sludge called Unicum ...

You are forgiven, as you otherwise demonstrate Taste, as does Mrs BT.

Unicum appears to consist mostly of Herbs, which are Greens, and therefore Good For You...

The nastier the flavour, the more wholesome the sludge drink?
  • Ooh, Moniack mead!🙃🥂🙂🙃

I'm sorry, but 'Unicum' sounds to me like a trade association, probably for something quite unmentionable. I'll fetch my coat ... :naughty:
Moving in accomplished, and first night spent. The storage heaters don't appear to work, but I've borrowed a fan heater that does, and there's a Gas Bloke coming on Tuesday to give me a quote for installing proper central heating.

I managed to be toasty warm in bed by the simple application of a "teddy bear" mattress protector and (of course) an actual teddy bear. I've been reunited with all my other bears, who are settling in happily on an ottoman in the bedroom.

The slow-cooker has also been deployed: I made a chicken casserole this afternoon and let it cook while I went out for coffee and an amble with my bridesmaid and her husband, and was met by a rather delicious aroma when I got back.

I think I'm going to like it here, especially if I can find a job.

Some years ago a Canadian Minister of Oceans and Fisheries was accused of directing an obscenity at an Opposition MP in the House during a debate about the cod stocks. No no, he protested - he had made a comment about the seals' impact on the stocks. (In French, a seal is un phoque.)
  • I’m glad it went well, piglet. Storage heaters are always a pain; I had them in a rented house in London.

Off for a sunny walk in a few minutes and then to work. Not too arduous today as Monday is my admin and communicating day. I might even fit in an hour of study later.
  • If the storage heaters have been turned off (there's probably a switch by the meter/fuse board), you'll (obviously) need to turn them on. However if they are "off peak" as is usually the case, they'll only start warming up at night.

I don't know what central you're getting, but if it's electric don't go for Fischer as it's ££££.

We have a lot of Wet From Above at the moment - hope it eases off before I take the puppy to the park!

Said puppy is now 14 months old and a giant!

Indeed - I was going to comment that I wouldn't own up to liking a drink with a name like that, but didn't want to be the first to admit to having a mind like a sewer.

Glad to hear you've successfully moved in, Piglet, and yay for slow cookers, chicken casseroles and teddy bears.

While watching Tudor Monastery Farm again on the interwebz, I've come up with a cheese-making pun. Want to hear? No? Whey to go!

I'll get my waterproof fleece jacket. :)
