S is now on 3 monthly checkup, let us know if you spot any lumps stage, so this is as good as it gets.

A from church is dying from pancreatic cancer and not expected to make Christmas. His partner, also A, is very upset.

Some good news! My last CT scans were good, so I now have to go-ahead to have my chemo port removed.

A died shortly after Christmas. His funeral is next Monday. I would say about fifty and a fitness freak.

  • A minor tangent, but something that annoyed me, as do so many things. The Supportive Care unit at the cancer centre that cared for me has been rebranded as the PsychoSocial Oncology unit. I thought they did a great job of supporting me following the treatment, but this sounds as if has more to do with a nasty new disease - not really warm and friendly at all.

@Stercus Tauri: ugh. Sounds like it didn't occur to anyone to run the proposed new name past patients to find out how it would sound to the general public.

    PsychoSocial? Qu'est-ce que c'est?*

    * French for “What is that?” but also part of a Talking Heads lyric that sprung to mind when seeing this, and “What is that?” is what I think a lot of people are going to be asking when they see that name, so it works on two levels
  • It’s a name which works well internally with the medical staff, as it will be clear to them what it means, but really is a poor choice for the public. It’s not giving off an ethos of patient centred.
  • “Works well for the medical staff”??

    Oh please that’s a bloody eye-roller.

More likely works well for some policy writer with no idea who has never worked at the coal face.

  • Fuckingfuckityfuckfuck.

Mum's just phoned me. Her new man, who has made her human again, has bowel cancer, and is seeing a specialist at 8am tomorrow.

She went through this with Dad, whose oesophageal cancer was found too late.
  • More curses from our direction. I knew my aunt had colon cancer. Parents were over to see her this week. It's inoperable.

The local NHS Trust offered her a phone interview with the oncologist - she has enough hearing loss to need face-to-face, as she can't hear over a phone. She told them this, and so far nothing. :rage: She's got the senior Macmillan nurse chasing it up, reporting back to her tomorrow.

Dad's pretty cut up by this. She's his only surviving sibling, and the other 2 went to cancers...
  • So sorry to read the posts. It is such a cursed disease. @Sandemaniac May your Mom's friend find hope and @Celtic Knotweed Sorry to read about your aunt, prayers that a meeting that she can hear take place.

So sorry @Sandemaniac and @Celtic Knotweed . First of all boo to people who don't understand that hearing loss makes telephone calls difficult. Even with my fancy hearing aids phone calls can be a struggle, and I know if I am stressed what hearing I do have tends to go out the window. I hope the nurse manages to get a face to face appointment for your at @Celtic Knotweed . As for your mum's new man @Sandemaniac, what a total bugger.

Many of you here probably already know from FB that Rowen, whom I’m not sure boarded the new Ship, has been ill for a long time and is now extremely poorly. Her sister posted yesterday that she’s not strong enough to be interacting online much. She and all her family could do with your prayers, I’m sure.

I am asking for prayers for my young friend Diana. She is going for surgery next week. She is the mother of three, and doctors are telling her they suspect cancer. I'm not sure why doctors need to say that until they know for sure, as it adds to the worry.

On the phone to Mum earlier this evening. She and Dad had been to visit his sister in hospital today. Hospice at home for her is being organised, and hopefully will be sorted soon - although they're having problems due to county boundaries :rage:

Might not be long left  The spirit is strong as ever, but the body is not...

My aunt, J, has been discovered to have many secondary cancers following breast cancer a few years ago. She is 86, so her being near death is not a shock. This will, however, mean that my father, A, faces losing his wife (who is nearing death) and his sister, both to cancer, and his closest friend (to other causes of death) within a year, if not a few months.

    Your prayers would be welcome.

  • Does anyone else here do peer mentoring with cancer patients? It can be a useful role, but I was finding that my first-hand experience of treatment was becoming too stale - twelve years ago - and I was also finding that I didn't want to talk to new cancer patients about long term effects when they asked. The immediate concerns of treatment are what need support from someone who has recently been there, and I didn't feel it was helpful to talk too much about the negative stuff or the lingering hangovers that may stay with you.

Also, confound it, I am getting old and not aging gracefully. So I thanked them for trusting me for so long, and stood down. It was interesting and often rewarding. I met some memorable people, and I certainly recommend peer mentoring to others who want to find a way to give back a little of the care they have received.
  • @Stercus Tauri, it is wise to recognize when it is time to step down. Some people continue longer than is beneficial. I am sure many were blessed by your care.

Indeed. Not a job I could do; you should be proud of your work.
  • Yes indeed!
  • After a mastectomy 3 years ago the breast cancer of Mrs Vole has returned as a 25mm lump in the chest wall. Is it a metastasis or were some cancer cells left behind from the original surgery? -we'll never know but she's been told it's not operable. She has an appointment to see an oncologist next week.

Cursing and praying are not mutually exclusive are they?

I feel for her, and you, acutely.

I was at a Breast Clinic myself yesterday. Two mammograms, an ultrasound and a biopsy - I won't know the outcome for several weeks.

So many others in the room, some obviously in treatment, some apprehensive, one woman next to me evidently in shock. And the cheery decor and the burbling TV/radio.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
So sorry to hear the news about Mrs Vole @Merry Vole . I hope the oncologist has a plan when you see her/him.
@Firenze, hope the outcome is good news.
I'd rather like to call burbling radio or any sort of extraneous noise in hospital clinics to hell. As a deaf person I can't hear the music or speech clearly , but it means I'm also not likely to hear my name called over the noise.

Totally agree. I had always to sit as near the door as possible. And get all the various doctors, nurses and radiographers to face me when speaking - not always easy as they're usually looking at screens.

Praying and cursing go hand in hand at times like this, and I am sure most ministers will agree. They both serve a purpose. One of my best moments was when a friend was so angry at what had happened to me that I had to laugh.
  • Sometimes "Fuck!" is the only coherent thing you can say and I, for one, would understand utterly if I was the person you said it to.
