  • Very exciting day! A non-profit called Molly's Angels, which serves seniors, is sending a van to take us to the Farmer's Market this morning. A blessing for those of us who no longer drive and a fun get-together with neighbors. No doubt that will be followed by lunch and a longer-than-usual nap. My shopping will stay on budget by the weight of the bags I can carry.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
    Tomorrow:
Unpack ( too tired this evening)
    Essential shopping
    Washing
  • Tomorrow, my monthly farmers' box arrives, so I will be sorting, cleaning, and storing the fruits and vegetables, and thinking ahead about how to use the produce. Next, I will try my hand at activating my new upgraded phone that I have been postponing for a week. I am sure it will be easy since it is a senior phone, but somehow I am nervous about it. I fear that I may deactivate my old phone and fail to activate the new one. Once that is done, I have a list of calls to make.

    Tomorrow: routine appointment with nurse.
Son coming, though it may be too wet for gardening. I’m hoping he brings me some meals!
Ironing, which I failed to do today.
    Sorting of filing cabinets.

A lie in followed by a nice long walk this morning before the rain.
Work emails checked - nothing happening (I work flexibly from home and I am paid to teach my university modules in term time so the summer is very quiet).
To do: complete a piece of work with the aim to submit later this week.
  • A lovely walk and being able to work at home sounds very nice @Heavenlyannie. Was it too wet for gardening @Puzzler?

Today's to do list started yesterday. Remind husband to set alarm for 6 as early appointment today. Printed off hospital instructions with map. Phoned hospital to check re covid precautions. Photocopied referral and cancer centre summary re son. Plastic bag out to pack medications.

This morning up early, reminded son just to take the box of the medication kept in the fridge (it probably didn't matter, but thought it was good to remind him about safe storage).
Got him to take medications and put everything in the plastic bag to go.
Brekky for all and once they left started on my own jobs.
    Shower and dressed
walked cat (long hair nowhere to be seen, so he might have to be done later)
    Loaded dishwasher and turned on
Load of washing done and hung up
    Second load of washing on

Quick chat with husband post hospital appointment. Paperwork put aside with stuff son needs for his test. That can go with him on the day to save giviving lengthy history.

Having a bit of a quiet time now, later on off to GP for eye test in order to renew my licence.
    Might have a nap later!
  • Everything!
We've had two housefuls of visitors for the past 10 days - some for the twins' first birthday party and then a reunion with Swedish friends. Thank goodness for the ironing machine.
  • Ooh @TheOrganist is your ironing machine like a drum one, or is it like a tiny flat ironing board with a large hotplate which presses everything flat. Do you use it for sheets and tablecloths only, or for everything?

My Mum used to have the latter type and eventually she stopped using it, I am not sure why. I suspect the decision to purchase was Dad keeping up with his friends in having one, but in the hot weather I know Mum found it unpleasant to use.

Today's to do list has gone to pot. I got up early and began preparing for an early morning medical appointment only to discover it is tomorrow!!! Cheery son was really lovely about it, "well Mum we've had a dry run and we'll be good for tomorrow"!! I hope so, I was so anxious about oversleeping that I only slept lightly. I'll go and set an alarm for tomorrow morning now, before I forget!

Today likely to be an outdoor day. I should go inspect the garden for the impact of Storm Floris - an awful lot of windfalls I fancy. And finish tidying the front path - which involves a lot of hand-to-hand combat with the cranesbill geranium.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
    Already done a wash.
Hair appointment at 10. Put washing outside if not raining when I get back.
Practise music for Bristol in a week’s time.
    Renew house insurance.
Prepare topic for French group tomorrow.
    Move money around.
    Continue sorting.
  • @Cheery Gardener It is a drum machine, used for bedding, tablecloths, napkins and jumpers. It can be a it of a nightmare for anything with fastenings, especially plastic poppers and nylon zips so those bits need to be finished with an standard iron.

  • No work today as it is my day off.
    Done:
    Daily mental health walk
    Laundry
    Bird feeding in garden
    To do:
Sweep patio (lots of plum windfall)
Read in preparation for dissertation study in September (Dr William Perfect, 18th century case studies on insanity)
    Tidy bedroom cupboard

Day off from work, so I'm doing all those little jobs that build up.
I've been shopping - and chatting to neighbours - and I bought a plant from the sale table of the plant stall on the weekly market, so that's got to be planted out. It's got white bell-like flowers and I've already forgotten the name of it, but it will look lovely next to my dark blue delphinium.
While I'm out there - weeding! My neighbour has ordered a bin for green waste, and I'm going halves with her on it. I'd been putting the weeding off until I could work out what to do with them.
And also I'll be scrubbing my new bench down with sugar soap, preparatory to repainting. (Not actually a new bench - it was given to me, and needs a bit of TLC).

All done with the necessary things on my list...
    1. Visit the Vampires (that's what they call themselves!) for my quarterly blood-letting.
    2. Paid bills.
    3. Made iced tea.
    4. Washed dishes.

    Still to do:
Catch up with streaming some shows.

Thursday is my day to goof off and do random things on my permanent list.

That sounds like fun. I enjoy visiting regional agricultural shows.

    - Morning dog walk: done
    - Apply for 3 jobs I saw earlier in the week
    - Meeting with my job search provider*
    - Continue my start in learning Welsh via the Open University intro course and Duolingo
    - Just started a new chat conversation with a refugee via a chat app where you talk and correct English; we're talking about health (they choose the topic)
    - Look at potential vocational courses that may help employment prospects; I can get a large discount through the state educator for being unemployed

    * mandatory once you've been unemployed a certain length of time down here; they provide help in job searching, resume writing... But mine says I'm doing fine and sessions tend to be brief
  • I enjoyed the fair, but was disappointed in the lack of chicken displays, which is always my favorite. Then I remembered the bird flu and guessed that was why there were none.

Yesterday's plan for post-Floris garden tidy dampened by early rain and continuing cloud, so maybe re-instate that.

Knitting stalled as I wait for more yarn. Crochet going slowly because joining squares with 4-ply uncommonly tedious.
  • Today's plan was to go to various shops in nearby town, then have lunch out.
That was stymied by Tools With A Mission, who Mr RoS needs to collect the current collection of tools from our garage so he has room for more donations promised - and they can only come 'sometime' this morning. Judging by the places they have to go to before they get to us, it will be later rather than earlier.

The next thing that needed doing was watering the plants in the back garden - that has been accomplished. 4 clematis in pots, about 15 tomato plants and 1 runner bean in various containers, 2 raised beds, one of Swiss chard and one of leeks, and a few individual ornamentals - in the ground, and needing the odd bit of supplementary watering just to keep them alive.

I'd probably better use the unplanned time at home to strip the spare bed after last week's visit from my brother & SiL. Not looking forward to the washing as I really struggle getting double bed linen on & off the clothesline, and I need to be sure of a long sunny day to get them dry as they have to be hung out folded. The next few days look promising, so I need to have the sheet & duvet cover off and ready to go in the machine.
I might get the duvet folded and put away in the drawer under the sofa bed. It's a struggle, so that will depend on how much energy I have left after getting the duvet out if its cover.

We might get out somewhere local for lunch if TWAM come at a suitable time.

A fun day today - this morning was Star Trek day, when a friend comes round and we watch a couple of episodes together. We're up to Deep Space Nine season 2 at the moment.
This afternoon, there's a talk at the library about dragonflies.
And then I got an idea for a fan fiction I want to write, which will take me into the evening (it's a crossover between Good Omens and the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch - my first story had Aziraphale going to the Folly to meet Molly, because of their shared love of baking. This one will have Crowley meeting up with Nightingale and a shared love of vintage cars!)
  • @Eigon, what a fun day ahead. I have some housekeeping chores, nothing big, and I am going to try a new art project. As the temperature is predicted to be in the 90s°F, a swim this afternoon is in order.
  • Got the spare bed stripped, but hurt my back wrestling the duvet into a slightly too small vacuum storage bag, so have had to abandon it for a day or two.

TWAM came and cleared the tools from the garage in time for us to go out for lunch (Today's 'special' - poached cod in a lemon sauce with courgette, aubergine, cherry tomatoes and mustardy mash).

Followed that with a nap on a hot water bottle to ease my back, and took a couple of paracetamol when I woke up. Hope it's OK by morning, tomorrow's highlight is supposed to be going out to buy a new mattress.

I've just bought the paint (and a paintbrush) to paint the bench I was given for the garden, so that's this afternoon's job, along with finishing the weeding in the top plant bed.
I washed the bench and rubbed it down the other day, so it's ready to go.

Normal Saturday morning outing is just to a local shop, for the paper and maybe an odd or end. But there were prescriptions to collect, so bus into town. Unfortunately, after two stops, the driver had instructions to divert - why I can't imagine, since I walked the rest of the journey and saw no cause.

After the drug drop, over to the main drag - lovely big cherries in the Asian grocery, a wonderful range of jams, honeys and molasses - but no maple syrup. On to the next supermarket, syrup, bread, scones, nibbles, paper. Detour to fabric shop looking for some material to match those Chinese garments you get printed up with historic uniforms - I fancy it's some sort of polyester jersey.

Finally bus and haul shopping home in a strong headwind. Footsore and puggled.

  • This morning I've done some last minute birthday shopping (for daughter's birthday tomorrow). Card and wrapping all sorted.

Ironed tablecloth that I washed yesterday and got it back onto dining table.

Have vacuumed through house and dusted skirting boards.

I'm off to eat lunch and then I'll put the afternoon tea snacks together and make sure I've organised all the tea/coffee stuff and be ready to go.

Rest of the afternoon is going to be chatting with friend and drinking cups of tea in copious amounts as well as dip and biscuits and some lemon myrtle shortbread. I hope that will be tasty!

Slight panic stations as the bus companies locally are changing, so I checked to make sure the early bus would still be running on the morning I go on holiday - and it isn't!

  • Glad you were able to get that vaccination @LatchKeyKid, I must look into one for myself. I hope you managed to get your tax return sorted out.

Today's routine is just the bare bones. Bin and empty cat's trays because it is bin day. Cheery husband and I will have a brief outing together this afternoon, just to potter around our local cafe/nursery/giftshop area and see if there is anything we fancy. I imagine it will be a window shopping exercise. As he's got a week off between jobs, it's nice to have a weekday together.

I'll try not to make it a lengthy outing though as he's done a massive job clearing out our garage over the last couple of days with a couple of recycling and tip runs and he still has trouble with his feet post his ankle surgery and he can't walk/stand for hours on end.

You have done heaps today @Climacus!!! I'm feeling a bit slack in comparison!

At the moment I'm sitting watching other people start their day. That woman in the blue T-shirt has just run a second circuit of the block. The gaggles of schoolchildren have congregated on corners and made their way up the hill.

It is supposed to be sunny, but there's a blanket of cloud. At 20°C+ a blanket is not what you want. It is supposed to rise to 28° (28!) Do I hit the garden, and ferry water to shrivelling plants? A lot are shrivelling because they're Done for this year (having been drawn into early efflorescence by the hot Spring).

Work on the nearing-completion knitting and crochet? Not ideal yarn-handling conditions. Read? Very likely. Futter about on the iPad? Even more likely. Paint? Possibly.

One thing for sure, dinner will be a traybake. I'm having as little interaction with hot cookers as possible.

ETA Blue T-shirt is making another circuit and looking at her Fitbit. Go on, that's enough.
