Thank you awesome people

PantsPants Shipmate
I know that lots of people have moved on from when I was very actively posting many years ago, but just wanted to pop in and say to those who were here then and are still now... you're wonderful people!

  • Hi @Pants Good to see you!
  • PantsPants Shipmate
I pop in to read every now and then but there always seems so much to catch up on!

Some 'life reflecting' in the last week or so made me think back of how much I used to enjoy being part of the Ship and the awesome people I met on the boards, in the cafe and IRL, some of whom I'm still in contact with. Such a fab group of people!

@Pants , I just popped in to commiserate about Eurovision . Another one who reads occasionally, posts rarely , but who has happy memories from all those years ago.
  • Nice to hear from you both, hope real life is treating you OK.
  • Hi Pants! (This thread is a great way to draw out all the old timers!)
  • PantsPants Shipmate
    @Miffy You're almost a real person now though. ;)

@WormInTheGrass Were you formally known as something different?

@Gracious Rebel It's fab to 'see' everyone again!
  • No, have always been @WormInTheGrass, but lurked for a long time before I joined, so I probably remember you more than the reverse

Making one of my occasional visits. I just can’t believe that Ms Miffy, (who signed up for the Old Ship but never posted. Think she was trying to keep an eye on her poor old Mum), is now about the same age as I was when I first embarked on this voyage.

Nor can I believe that I qualify for the Elderly Parents thread!
  • heeheehee, good to see you anyway!

Thanks. It’s kinda restful here, no ghastly ads offering you ‘helpful’ advice every five minutes!

Nooo... everyone on here is still in their 20's or so!

Not sure that quite works even if you're counting in hexadecimal.

I joined in my mid-forties and my eldest son had just married so I was at the awkward stage of accepting that I was middle aged but still being 27.
22 years on, and I despite retirement I’m still no more than about 43. I don’t mind getting a pension but one can do that without retiring, so I’m not old.

Despite hanging around universities since 1981, there are times I still feel like the 17 year old working class lad who walked into first year not knowing if he belongs. It still shocks me when I interact with new professors who are young enough to be my children.

Chronologically, I will be 59 on August 25. Mentally I still feel like my own teen/20-something self (or even younger), on lots of levels. The last 20 or more years in particular feel like yesterday. "59" just sounds much older than "58" does to me, for some reason.
  • MiffyMiffy Shipmate
    59? You’re a young thing!😁

Turning 60,ChasMastr, was my most traumatic milestone to date. Turning 59 was a comparative walk in the park psychologically.

My mother said that the year between thirty-nine and forty were the best ten years of a woman’s life.

I found turning 51 and 61 harder than turning 50 or 60, because now I was over 50/60.

  • DoublethinkDoublethink Admin, 8th Day Host
I have found turning fifty somewhat difficult, but I think it’s the combination of perimenopause and elderly parents rather than the number itself.

My mum was 36 for about 5 years.

As it happens, I had almost exactly this conversation with a colleague yesterday. I think people tend to latch at some internal age that they think they "really" are. Certainly we agreed that we each had a point in adulthood that we latched on to as representing our "real selves", and were occasionally surprised when the flesh could no longer keep up with our mental picture of what our capabilities should be.
