AI generated content

Is this now a rule? I remember the interim ruling being AI generated content could be posted if you acknowledged the usage. I apologize, if I got this wrong or missed a ruling.

May I remind people that the Ship has a policy of no AI generated content.

Sorry - the Admins remind me that if you need assistance to ensure that your posts are grammatical and coherent you may use it to edit something you've already composed. But for most purposes AI is deprecated and should never be used as a source for information.

The two relevant posts regarding this are here and here. The latter is a permission to use ai for post composition as a reasonable adjustment, we would prefer people who don’t need to do this, don’t do it. However, the key point is we would like people to avoid using ai for sourcing because of the high potential for both plagiarism and inaccurate information.

Dafyd was right that a post referencing ai as a source contravenes current policy, even with identification of the source as ai. I appreciate that interimness of this policy is somewhat confusing.

In a work context I supervise university students on training placements, and I have asked the university for additional information on how they manage ai. If any of that is transferable to our context, once I have it, I may come back to Styx to discuss this further.

Thanks, Doublethink. Are there any plans to have a robust discussion of AI policy in the future with the intention of moving from an interim ruling to a policy? I appreciate how fluid and rapid the development of generative AI continues to be. As you know I work at a university, and I am very mindful the universities worldwide are grappling with the issue of appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI.
