Having now watched the whole of the second of Rivals, I reckon that 90% of the last episode didn't happen in the book. They even killed off a character who appears in one of the later books in the series! 🙃
At least there's going to be another series in November.
Having stuck with Rivals for both seasons, I ended up loving it. Particularly the romance between Lizzie and Freddie. I was very disappointed by the death of one of the main characters as I really like them and felt for them in the terrible marriage they had.
This week Cheery son and I watched the Magic Faraway Tree now that it's become available on streaming here. I had been looking forward to this as I really like Nicola Coughlan and Claire Foy as actresses. Reviews from my house are mixed.
I loved the child actors and thought they were great, I didn't quite connect with the dreamy chef Dad, and the clever Engineer Mum. Cheery son described it to me as a tick box film, with all the elements included, modern family rediscovering their imaginations and creating their dreams in the country, grouchy preteen reconnecting with siblings, nasty grandma being defeated, with the magical aspects of visiting the tree added.
I thought the Moonface look was clever, but not quite right in terms of the book and I didn't remember him from my childhood as being such a serious character. I think there wasn't enough time to enjoy interactions with all the characters and son and I thought it would have been better as a TV series in the vein of The Psammead or the Narnia books of the 80's/90's
It was quite a long film, but we both came away enjoying the happy ending but not feeling entirely satisfied. Maybe that's because we were not the target audience, and I suspect younger folk may have enjoyed it.
On the other hand I am enjoying The other Bennet Sister now the plot has departed from Pride and Prejudice territory.
My daughter was enjoying it so much that she binge watched it! I'll check into getting BritBox so I can watch and then we'll very likely have a lot to share about it. I'm looking forward to that discussion!

On Netflix I enjoyed, "All The Light We Cannot See." I had read the book and was surprised that liked the video more. It is historical fiction novel, about a blind girl in Paris and a German boy who joins the Nazi army to escape from his job.
My wife and I enjoyed Wanda Sykes’ new special on Netflix, though I know she and her comedy may not be to everyone’s taste. (And her joke about Lindsey Graham may strike some as “too soon,” though the show was recorded before he died.)
Has any shipmate watched the BBC's 'Ann Droid'? We tried the first episode and didn't much care for how people treated, or spoke to, each other. Clever, but ....
Does it get better in subsequent episodes?
Finally finished watching The Americans on Disney+ last night. Have been dipping in and out of it over the last few months. Would definitely recommend it.
For those not familiar with the premise, it's set in the early 80s and we follow a couple of Russian spies living deep undercover in Washington, when a counterintelligence FBI officer moves in next door.
I heard The Americans recommended on a podcast this week, so I'll definitely be checking that one out!
Today I started watching a new version of My Brilliant Career on Netflix. I am loving the actress playing Sybilla, whe looks and sounds right to me! I don't think I ever watched the movie which featured Sam Neill and Judy Davis. Once I've finished the series I will give that a go for comparison.
I have not seen Ann Droid, but have seen plenty of shorts on the video sharing platform and it did tickle my funny bone. When it is screened here in Oz, I am sure I will give it a whirl!
Other than that it has been Shakespeare and Hathaway for me, as well as Death Valley and I'm working my way through New Tricks, as I had only dipped into that intermittently when it was on TV, so thought I'd like to watch the whole thing and get a better feel for the characters.
I watched quite a bit of New Tricks - I think it started off very well, but somewhere became boring - I would say series 7 time. Shortly before the cast started changing.
The original cast are all brilliant, and made it special.
I recently watched all of New Tricks and would probably agree with @Schroedingers Cat . All the same, I don’t regret watching the rest of the episodes.
The therapy programme was back last night, we enjoy it a lot, and I like Orna, the therapist. It's quite exotic, but I guess that's telegenic. (Couples Therapy).
I’ve very much been looking forward to Lanterns, but due to travel I won’t be able to watch it until September sometime. Ditto the new season of Reacher.

I loved it. Go Mary!
And yes, it looks quite funny. Diane doesn't mind saying the things nobody else will. WHich is ideal.

And Lanterns just started! I liked it.
Ooh. I rather enjoyed the first series, and David Mitchell has always struck me as the sort of guy I would enjoy a quiet pint with, which helps.
Unfortunately I won't get Ludwig S2 in the US until probably late this year.
