Styx: Gadgets for God

I miss Gadgets for God. Is there any chance the website might, you know, bring it back and add stuff to it? It’s been so long… the mystery worshiper thread made me think about this.

(ETA clarify title, DT)

Just to be clear: are you asking the independent SoF forum operators about a feeature on the entirely separate SoF magazine? Or are you hoping that @Simon might hear you and pipe up again?
  • Wait a second, they’re not connected anymore? 😮

This was covered at length at the time. Myself and @Alan Cresswell run Frolicking Leviathan, which runs the forums with a license from Simon to use his intellectual property - ie the SOF branding.

Ownership changed hands three years ago.

Oh my. I knew you guys were running the boards but I didn’t know things were separate like that.

Maybe a Gadgets for God thread in Heaven would be an idea…

Feel free to start one if you would enjoy it :)

The problem with Gadgets for God in later years was that it was becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between what was genuinely tacky and what was being deliberately ironic
  • Well, I don’t necessarily mind either of those myself.

  • Is this something that should go in the new thread?

Perhaps with some clue as to what the link will open, please?

I suppose an entire thread of exclamation marks could be ¡ron¡c comment.

    Perhaps.

But I do think many of us are reluctant to click on a link when we’re given no hint as to what might come up when we do.

Well, not NO hints. Contextually, it feels unlikely that one of the aforementioned Frolicking Leviathans would post dangerous or illegal content on their own property. And, at the very least, you can hover over the link to get the address information.

Blah blah blah, it's a little statue of St. George and the dragon, where the dragon looks like it's getting tickled by George's spear. But really it's George's horse and the dragon that have a multiplicity of awkward interactions. Naughty.

That assumes every reader knows what Frolicking Leviathans is and who its owners are. I doubt that’s a safe assumption, and I think the posts at the top of this thread confirm that doubt.

And, at the very least, you can hover over the link to get the address information.
Which in some cases will give useful information, but in others will not.

But you do know Doublethink's an Admin, right? I'm all for caution in clicking on links, particularly if they purport to come from your bank, or Microsoft, or a daughter you didn't know you had who's lost her own phone - but c'mon, an Admin.

Of course I do. But I don’t assume every single person reading a thread, including possibly newbies, does.

Call me curmudgeonly—you wouldn’t be the only one to—but I think it’s basic courtesy on an internet forum to give some indication as to what you’re linking to. (And though it’s not the topic of this thread, I could add to give threads titles that indicate what they’re about.)

Even though her roles follow her screen name. You're probably right - there's no underestimating obliviousness.

Her role is indeed shown with her username, but as you say, I suspect lots of people pay no attention to that. To be honest, those Admin and Host and Shipmate designations aren’t something I notice unless I have some reason to look at them.
