The government will certainly hope that this week's royal schmooze-fest will make a positive impression on Trump, creating a feelgood factor for the UK.
It's an unusual and carefully crafted state visit. There's a crammed schedule squeezed into a day and a half, most of it dedicated to royal spectacles. Windsor is being used like a royal theme park.

Probably wise, if there is to be any chance of Trump taking any notice if any issues the UK government cares about.
Pictures going round of Trump at the 9/11 memorial looking like he has had a stroke. The right side of his mouth has obviously dropped. He is looking very ill. I would say an intervention is needed. He is supposed to be coming over here soon. I am not sure he will make it.
I wouldn't make this diagnosis based on one picture. He's old, and he's not well in the ways that old people tend not to be well. This doesn't mean he's going to die any time soon. Based on all the old people I've known, I think he could stroke out overnight or his life could drag out for several more years. For someone getting top-tier medical care, the chronic conditions of old age can be managed for quite a while, right up until they can't.
Trump loves all things royal. I think Charles will butter him to the hilt.
You may well be right. Charles III is a little less unshakeably diplomatic than Elizabeth II was, though. There is a slight possibility that he may blurt out what he actually thinks.
Well. we had a visiting family and the sound technician walk out of church today after our pastor, while speaking against the increasing violence rising in our country, also said Charlie Kirk's views were against the teaching of the church. He listed three examples: LGBTQ issues, immigration, and women's rights comparing them to the official positions of the ELCA. I did not notice the family walking out and was told about the sound technician after the service was over. I know the sound technician comes from a conservative background. The division is there.
We are a blue to blueish-purple congregational. No direct mention of the assassination was made in the sermon at our place, but in the prayers of the people we were called to pray for the family and friends of Charlie Kirk, for Tyler Robinson and his family and friends, and for “our American family.”

I understand what you mean. It is not the only one. We do need to be careful yes, but equally this should be investigated closer by the media including over here as we need to be prepared for the visit.
Is it sensible to fly with chronic venous insufficiency?
I find myself unable to care if it is or isn't in this instance, though I wouldn't be surprised if Air Force 1 is able to maintain a higher cabin pressure than is typical if that was the relevant factor.

It has its own medical facilities including a small operating theatre, and there are US medical facilities in the various US bases in the UK, so he’s well catered to in terms of health care, even before you get to UK specific options.

Should it be investigated? It's my understanding that the age and health of the U.S. president suddenly stopped being important sometime around July 22, 2024.
FBI Director Kash Patel, in his closing remarks concerning the arrest of Tyler Robinson, addressing Charlie Kirk, said something to the effect: "We have the watch. See you in Valhalla."
Odd saying, considering Patel is Indian, not Viking.
Two possible explanations. 1) Sometimes used by Marines for a fallen comrade. Problem is, neither Kirk nor Patel were in the military. However, Kirk and Patel were close friends, each of them appearing on the other's blogs or broadcasts.
2) White nationalists have long used Norse Mythology in reference to themselves. Problem is Patel is not Northern European. Kirk, though, identifies as a Christian nationalist.
Maybe it was a combination of both lines of reasoning.
Either way, or not, it is still an odd saying at the end of a speech of a new conference in LDS country.
Well if he knew Kirk would appreciate the comment, then he might well have said it, whatever his socio-religious background. I had a friend who was a pagan, and I would always send him Beltane and Samhain greetings, even though I didn't think those days were religiously significant. But they were to him.

I am guessing that his inevitable death, sooner or later, is not going to make very much difference. He has been nothing more than a weak, self-interested puppet who has served to put more dangerous people in the positions of power that they wanted. In my view, all tuppenceworth of it, that is the danger the USA, along with its former friends and allies, is facing.
Going back to my comment about Rats eating their own.
Tyler Robinson, the alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk, is said to be a member of the Groyper movement lead by Nick Fuentas. . . .
So much for the Radical Left causing Kirk's death, Mr Trump.
And it turns out that “is said to be” was nothing more than speculation and possibly even wishful thinking.
I think that still remains to be seen. If Utah's prosecutors are fished from the same pool as the DOJ we could yet find out that some of the 'evidence' is made up out of whole cloth.
Well, he's here and the military laid on a bells-and-whistles welcome x 2, although it could be that the display by the Red Arrows will have to be cancelled because of low cloud.
Trump looking less rumpled than usual - has he found a new tailor?

It always remains to be seen, which is why it’s never wise to think we know the answers within hours after something like this.
That said, unless they’re manufacturing the relationship between Robinson and his roommate, and the text messages between them, being a groyper seems very unlikely. And it doesn’t take much research to learn how the groyper hypothesis got started based primarily on speculation and the tendency to blame “the other side.” It appears to be the flip-side of Trump’s claims of a violent radical Left.
And my gut is that Utah prosecutors are not fished from the same pool as the Trump USDOJ. Utah Republicans are generally very socially conservative, but at least historically, the LDS influence is the defining characteristic. I suspect local prosecutors are more concerned about being able to make their cases with evidence that proves the charges than Trump’s USDOJ often seems to be.

I think you're right that a lot of us wanted it to be a 'red-on-red' attack, if for no other reason than fear of further attacks on trans and left wing people if the Trumpists were given their Horst Wessel.

I think the most plausible bet right now is that the killer was left-leaning, but with a negligible commitment to any cause or faction, and that his primary motivation was to get some thrills
by acting out a gaming fantasy in real-life. His decision making process in choosing a victim was "Hey, here's a guy I really hate, coming to near where I live. He'll make as good a target as anyone!"

Thing is, plenty of people have good reason to despise the likes of Kirk. The difference is that most of those people were raised in environments that were largely non-violent rather than one that glorified it and gave them access to and training with lethal weapons.

I would agree with the first part—left-leaning. But I think it’s more plausible that his primary motivation involved more than just thrill-seeking.
I note he was shot with a bolt action rifle - which is old tech but presumably they are just more accurate.
Bolt action hunting rifles are incredibly common. The rifle was chambered in .30-06, which is both common, and larger than the 5.56 NATO commonly used in AR-15 style guns. Hitting a target 150 yards away with a scoped rifle in .30-06 is not a challenging shot. Whilst you're right that bolt action rifles can be more accurate (fewer moving parts, tolerances can be tighter, no bolt recoil), making such a shot would not be challenging for someone reasonably competent with a semi-auto rifle.
The shooter apparently described the gun he used as "grandpa's hunting rifle", and it's very plausible that his grandfather owned the gun for hunting deer or whatever.

It was also based on the fact that so many groypers felt confident that Kirk had been murdered by one of their own.

Speculation is pointless at the moment, but I'm going to do it anyway. From what I've seen Mr. Robinson seems to suffer a fairly advanced case of extremely online memerot. Trying to map him onto a familiar "left" or "right" set of beliefs seems as futile as trying to decide if John Hinkley was from the "left" or "right". One of the things that should be remembered by those who closely discuss the details of politics and policy is that kind of close attention to political detail is not commonplace and we should guard against projecting our own obsessions onto the general population.

He didn't even get to see the new cinema that had been set up just outside, or see any of the suppression of free speech with the arrest of the projectionists.

I don’t know what they were arrested for. We do have free speech. The fact it was on private land and is a protected building could be why. I don’t know.
Found more details. The images were projected on the public facing side of the castle from a hotel room opposite. The perpetrators have been bailed. My thought is that they will just get told not to do again or the charges will be dropped

No, he knew other nationalists would appreciate the comment. These are code words. Both sides are doing it. They are like red flags. Here is a recent discussion from NPR's 1A show.
