The shooter's father has been arrested and charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children. Of the second-degree murder charges the NY Times says, "In Georgia, that charge applies when a person is accused of causing a death while committing cruelty to children in the second degree, which involves criminal negligence."

He gave the gun to his son for Christmas last year.
  • Since Columbine, the US has had 388 school shootings, killing 586 people.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

In the case of the the Alapachee High School shooter, his father bought the AR-15 style rifle as a present.

PBS is now reporting the father has been arrested four four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder, and 8 counts of cruelty to children.

You would think if the FBI had already questioned you about your son's idealization of committing a mass school shooting you might not want to buy him a weapon of war.

  • I could believe that. I loathe blister packs.

Quite off topic to the current discussion, let me also unequivocally echo your sentiments in regards to blister packs. The worst offender? Anti-diarrhea medication! These blister packs are childproof, adult-proof, cat-proof, and possibly dog-proof as well. Good proof against all of the above except for desperate humans (me!) in tears and clawing desperately at the $###* pack for one measly little pill...

Reminds me of the difficulty in parts of Canada of making bins bear proof but still accessible to humans.

A political cartoon on YouTube today had the disconsolate figure of *Uncle Sam* sitting against the wall of a school. The wall is riddled with bullet holes.

The speech bubble above his head reads simply *WHY?*

    Meanwhile, J D Vance's take:

No word from Trump yet? Or is he still busy sending thoughts and prayers?

Bad form to quote oneself, but I've just noticed a remark from Trump towards the bottom of that report from the Guardian. He said:

It’s a sick and angry world for a lot of reasons and we’re going to make it better, and we’re going to heal our world.

Make of that what you will, but I doubt if strict (or even stricter) gun control will enter into his healing process...

We had one in Britain in 1996. It resulted in an almost total ban on gun ownership in the UK.

The ban hasn’t been completely successful, however - we’ve had three mass (not school) shootings killing a total of 22 people (including the three shooters) in the 28 years since Dunblane.

Yes, but it was the right thing to do.

Remind me again why the US can't do the same?

Nah, they're too... phallic. They'd worry it would make them look gay. Same demographic that won't wash their arse because that would be gay.

Wow! I'm guessing they're pretty big at that age?
  • It occura to this outsider, and no doubt has to many others, that for some/many gun-lovers, the gun is a substitute phallus.

About the size of a large dog, like a St. Bernard.

Ha! Did I mention that at that size they’re kinda cute, too?

North American black bears aren’t as naturally aggressive as brown bears or grizzly bears. They generally want to avoid interaction with people, and a loud noise or the like will typically get them going on their way. (The exception is if you see cubs, which means momma is close by. She will be very proactive in protecting her cubs.)

This lack of aggressiveness does not, of course, mean it’s safe to approach a black bear. Sometimes people have to be reminded of that.

Not the same scenario as the shooting in Georgia, but what are teenagers doing with guns in the first place?

You've been posting on this thread since its inception over 6 years ago. Why are you asking this question? Are you that uninformed after all this time?

There is a website I won’t link to here called
    “Trigger Happy Toys,”
which is exactly what you’re probably imagining. ;)
From another company, the Pistola vibrator.

A “gun shape glass adult toy”…

    The “Evolver”…

Oh my goodness. There are a lot of them. Mind you, the shape kind of writes itself, as it were.

Obviously my memory is not as good as it might be, and I have had a few health issues of my own to deal with over the past few years.

I admit that my question was, perhaps, rhetorical, and best ignored. Sorry.

Of course some gay people would be very happy with some of the devices I refer to above. ;) Or even straight guys into
pegging, maybe with some policewoman role-play, etc.

The only way that is going to happen is we have to change the 2nd Amendment or change the interpretation of it. Not going to happen with the current SCOTUS.

Of course the POTUS could just order all guns seized and chucked into the Blatimore Sound then claim immunity for an "official act". Sounds like a great way for Biden to spend January.
  • I have given this matter further serious thought. It may be significant that the father in the Georgia case gave his son the gun at the age of fourteen, the onset of puberty, the threshold of manhood. Setting aside the phallic symbolism mentioned before (though I have to comment that the male organ generates life, the firearm death), the gift of a gun does seem in this case to have been a rite of passage. Given the reported references by some gun lobbyists to the American's 'God=given right to bear arms', and the almost religious veneration accorded by some gun-owners to their weaponry, this appears to give the gun itself almost the status of a holy sacrament. The boy was being given the equivalent of his first communion - but it was. at least for him, the sacrament not of life, but of death.
I can, of course, speak only from report, not of experience, as Ruth has very properly pointed out, and having crystallised my thoughts I am going to shut up, at least for a while, as my wife and I are about to depart on a much-delayed short break/vacation.

Well, in much of the US, hunting is a fairly normal pastime. People who hunt own guns with which to hunt.

In families who hunt, it's normal enough for teenagers to hunt with their parents (or typically just dad, 'cause it's usually dad who is the hunter).

In such families, it's as normal for a teenager to have a gun allocated to their use as it is for a teenager to have a car allocated to their use.

In many states, children are allowed to own guns (they're not allowed to buy them, but they can be given a long gun by their parents). In other states, the gun will be owned by the parents, but allocated to the child's use under supervision of the parent.

  • Tangent Alert: I'm an amateur road cyclist. Last weekend a few gents in my regular riding group were shot at by a couple of teenagers. Apparently it was "just for fun." Law Enforcement was notified, came to the scene, and remains involved, but I'm not sure of any developments since Saturday. No one was taken into custody. Theswe were small caliber weapons -- .22s -- not that it matters.

I now have in my head an extension to Rowan Atkinson's "joyriding" rant in "The Thin Blue Line". Just for fun, indeed! A .22 can still kill someone. In these parts, that's a felony worth 1-3 years in jail.

I can sort-of-understand idiot teenagers taking a rifle and plinking at road signs, telegraph poles, or whatever, without too much thought about what's behind the road sign or the telegraph pole, because teenagers are often bad at thinking about possible consequences if things don't quite go the way they're expecting.

Plinking at people, on the other hand, is obviously a potentially lethal action.

As a kid raised in rural Pennsylvania, yes -- this is absolutely the case, and I did my fair share of "plinking" growing up... with a .22, but never in a million years at people!

I'll post an update if & when one is available.
