"Justice" thread in Hell

I commented there:
This is perhaps a dumb question but why is this in hell rather than purgatory? It sounds like this is more of a debate than just people being upset…

So should it be moved? A debate about capital punishment, both in this specific case and in general, seems more Purgatorial than Hellish to me. It doesn't seem to be a Hellish thread thus far (to me)...

With due respect this not primarily a debate about the merits ( or not) of capital punishment but an opportunity to vent about “ cruel and unusual” punishment in particular when the executioners stuff up the proceedings.

Just by the by the last execution in Oz was close to 60 years ago and went ahead at the express order of the then premier of the state of Victoria despite huge public objection and appeals for clemency.

It appears that for the vast majority of posters that there is no debate.
  • I began the thread in Hell because it seemed to me that everyone involved in the history of the attempted judicial killing must have experienced, or in some cases, created, a sense of hell that resonated with anyone who read about it.

Hell is capacious. Unless a thread is egregiously fluffy, or needs to be in Epiphanies, we let it stay. If you want to discuss something outwith Hell one start a new thread.
  • What @Sojourner said.

Hell at least gives people the chance to use expletives - and this ghastly story deserves them.

Wait, why would a Hell thread need to go to Epiphanies? I mean, it’s Hell.

I would assume that anyone who wanted to debate a position other than “execution for capital crimes is always morally wrong” would see that the thread is in Hell and that, if they were to express that position, they could be instantly personally attacked for holding it or saying so.

It’s not that a Hell thread as such would need to go in Epiphanies. It’s that a thread about “issues where people are personally invested, where academic detachment just isn’t possible, and where issues and identity significantly overlap” should be in Epiphanies, not Hell.

And I would assume that anyone wanting to debate any position on capital punishment would start an appropriate thread for that purpose in Purgatory, knowing that serious debate doesn’t belong in Hell and knowing that the thread in Hell was brought for the purpose of ranting, not debate.

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be much debate on that thread, it seems a pretty classic hell thread, people in agreement about the awfulness of a situation.
