We saw a cockroach in a trendy bar restaurant in Japan, spotlessly clean premises but a basement bar. I guess it must be difficult in hot humid countries, especially in urban basements. First time I have seen one ‘in the wild’ but seeing it reminded me not to leave my bag on the floor!
We’re someway west and south of our usual habitat staying with my cousin. A lovely couple of days walking in very different countryside has been accomplished along with the drinking of loads of wine on the return to cousinly abode.
We’re heading home tomorrow for a busy few days so it’s been good to take some time out to catch up with family.

After visiting Japan my wife has got into the habit of not putting her bag on the floor at any cafe or restaurant.
Torrential rain all morning has brought a halt to the roadworks until Tuesday. All local roads finally reopened, so maybe we might get our bins emptied today. I predict chaos when schools go back next week.
A bit further away, an overnight night bridge closure on Friday means a long detour to reach our cathedral town/ city where a music festival opens tomorrow. I had fancied going to a late night choral concert but not when it means driving home on unfamiliar routes.
Meanwhile I’m plodding on with sorting my paperwork, but my shredder has packed up.
We're safely home from a couple of days in sunny Gloucestershire. It rained all the way home and it looks like doing the same for the whole weekend. Not great when I'm spending it escorting our guests from our twinned towns around.
It rained in the night/early hours a bit, but it's definitely pretty intermittent showers still rather than more consistent rain (which is what we need here).
I missed art class this morning as I was feeling weary.
But I perked up after lunch. And I spent this afternoon dealing with my small wildlife pond. It's very healthy with oxygenating plants in the bottom and frog bit floating on the top. I've been planting marginals around the edge. Hoping for frogs in the spring! 🐸
Very hot and muggy here. If we're lucky there might be a thunderstorm on the way.
The main activity of the day involved getting Captain P's stuff ready for school. In France you have to provide quite a lot of school supplies, and all of it has to be named (like every last felt pen). You can order printed labels with your child's name on, but it's still quite laborious. Various items of new clothing also needed name labels sewn in.
After that, we made a greengage plum crumble and custard. Available later after you've eaten all your mains (husband en rouge is making vitello tonnato).
It was a bit muggy here this morning, but the rain doesn't seem to have got here yet. I'm hoping for decent weather on Sunday, as there's a classic car rally here, which will be fun if the rain holds off.
Then again, it's a Bank Holiday weekend, so I won't be holding my breath!
Supper was a sort of fridge clearout - chicken and greens in a creamy sauce with orzo.
Is it my imagination, or are the grapes we're getting at the moment a bit rubbish? I had a box of Tessie's Finest, with a die-by date of the 30th (Sunday) and several were mouldy and a lot rather squishy. Anyone else finding the same? 🙃

Here in the Wilds of Wiltshire, we went out this morning to a nearby village (to a midweek church service which was Very Long) and this afternoon I did some proper gardening for the first time in weeks. We had some rain in the night; it was still too hot and muggy out there to stay in the sun for long but there was plenty of shade and I really enjoyed it. Time passes at a different rate in the garden. I went out there at 2.30 and almost before I looked round it was 6.15 .
We had pasta and pesto for tea - supplies are running low and I had no tuna to throw in with it and the required grated cheese was in short supply as well. The earliest I can have a grocery delivery is Saturday, on account of it being a Bank Holiday Weekend when everyone will be Under Siege and there will be World Food Shortages.
Well done @Sandemaniac, and I'm impressed that you spent that long in the garden @nenya. I rarely manage more than an hour in any one go.
We went out to a local Indian restaurant with our Twinning Association and our Ukrainian guests this evening. Said guests were very tired as they only got here this afternoon, and had never had an Indian meal before which led to a bit of confusion. Still a nice time was had by all. We are accompanying said guests on a tour of Sherwood Forest tomorrow ahead of a big Twinning event with our other Twinned towns tomorrow.
We were really lucky. Rain was forecast but we got to and from the restaurant in the dry. As we walked down our road there were a couple of lightening flashes and shortly after we go home the heavens opened and we have one very heavy thunderstorm at the moment. The Internet keeps on dropping out, but I'm not sure if the storm is the cause of that or not.

Well, I wasn't full-on gardening for all that time! I do a lot of stopping and gazing and thinking, "I could put that there... or one of those there... or dig that up and..."
We've had a couple of very light sprinkles of rain today, which has evaporated off almost before it made the ground wet, but Mr Nen tells me we'll wake to rain tomorrow. I probably need to water a couple of the pots before then. There's a lively breeze but the sun is still very hot.
I've been out this morning seeing someone for coffee. I've been going to a Zumba class on a Friday morning in Nearby Town and she goes as well and we've had a couple of coffees together afterwards. Today's class was cancelled (apparently the teacher often does this on the Friday before a bank holiday :rolleyes:) but we met for coffee anyway and two hours and two coffees later we thought we'd better get up and do something else . We have only recently met and have different tastes and interests but seem to hit it off with each other and agreed that despite our differences we think we can call each other "friends" .
On my return I went into Domestic Goddess mode and got my slow cooker on with a casserole for later. We have our weekly online wine-tasting at 6pm and if I'm not that organised I often have to leave it prematurely to get on with the tea. I am an old lady and eating too late plays havoc with my digestion .
I am also likely to get sleepy even earlier than usual this evening as I had a disturbed night and was up and pottering to and fro from around 3.15am. This had the advantage of being able to observe the various stages of the partial eclipse of the Sturgeon Moon.
I was awake from about 3.30 to 6 am, then slept till 9.30. As a result I am totally discombobulated. At 2 pm I decided I needed to get out of the house, so went for a late lunch at the Wildflower centre, but it began to rain so my walk was cancelled.
We have been experiencing a strange phenomenon where water falls out of the sky. I'm sure I remember this happening in the past sometime...
Why, the same thing is occurring in Arkland the Surprised at this very moment!
The Weather Gods (if such Gods there be) delayed the descent of the aqueous element until just after I'd finished a bout of Scrape Ing flaky paint from the deck of the Ark. This is a Good Thing, as the Rain will wash off some of the dust and debris which I left behind...

Lunch is a nice FISH PIE, with Bread & Butter, and lots of some BEER.
It's been our church's annual Holiday Bible Club week this week. I don't lead it, I'm just a helper. We had about 40+ children each day (Tuesday-Friday) and I think it's been the smoothest ride of every one we've done, the children were brilliant.
Pre-Covid we did 5 days but drew back due to shortage of helpers; this year we probably could have managed it. We used also to go to Barry Island beach on the Saturday but also discontinued that as it was one thing too many to organise; anyway tomorrow's weather forecast is pretty dire! On Sunday we have our closing service and hot-dog lunch.
I am somewhat stressed but not necessarily negatively- we have found an apartment we'd like to live in but it's above our budget. Apparently the owner is open to offers. After a chat with our agent this morning we have just slightly reduced our asking price and now have an EARLY morning viewing of our house tomorrow. Who knows?
Thank goodness our daughter's dog has returned home is all I can say!!

I spent this morning on a tour of a bit of Sherwood Forest, led by a guide dressed as Robin Hood. It was great fun and I think our Ukrainian guests enjoyed it. They and my husband went for a quick tour of the aerospace college at the end of our road which also seemed to go down well.
This evening we have two exhibitions opening so I opted out of the college tour to come home and make sure my speech was OK. I've been faffing round trying to decide what to wear for the lat half an hour but I think I'm happy with my choice.
The rain didn't arrive till we were on the way home from the Forest. I'm hoping it hold off for my walk to and from Town this evening.
A dull, wet day has blossomed into a fine sunny evening. I see the traffic cones are in place and there's a works HQ cabin at the end of the street, so I fancy Monday will see the trenching such as has been going on in the adjoining road. Whatever is going in is being laid deep - one chap standing in the diggings was up to his chest.
Off to do chicken skewers and polenta for dindins.
I'm surprised by how judgemental people here are being about non-churchgoers having church baptisms for their kids. Do you want non-churchgoers in your churches or not? Accepting their children for baptism but then complaining behind their backs seems rather two-faced. I also don't see the problem with people dressing up for it - it's a special occasion! Tbh that comes across as a bit classist. God forbid people have fun at church!
There are different kinds of dressing up. You're right - it is a special occasion, and a lot of people will naturally dress up for it. They might also have a celebratory party, take family photos, and all those things they want to look their best for.
The occasional raised eyebrow is triggered by the people who have come dressed up for the club rather than dressed up for church.
Another warm, close day here; when I went out to get the obligatory f&c for supper, the app on my mobile was saying it was 22°. That may have been a bit optimistic, but it was jolly nice.
Busy day at work: one of my bosses, L, is leaving to pursue a change of career, and is dictating a shedload of notes about the cases she's leaving behind, so I'm being kept out of mischief!
I was wrong about the roadworks waiting until Monday. Eight thirty and the digger is stuttering at the end of the street. This could be a day for working at the back of the house - I have a pile of dressmaking alterations on hand.
Arrived home last night. Very long day travelling. In UK time, I was up at 1am and got home at 10:30. Today will be a day of trying to get over jet lag and catch up on the laundry.
Was very pleased to experience a gentle mizzle upon my return and an absence of the blazing heat the country was in when I left.

This morning we had an official Twinning event in our Market Square with speeches and presentations. Some of us then headed to a cafe for coffee where they were great at putting loads of tables together for us as one of our number couldn't get upstairs where there was more room. That was followed by fish and chips (or chips and mushy peas for me) in gazebo next to the church, I felt we were giving our guests the real British experience as the rain was bucketing it down.
Shortly we're heading out to a pub on a barge in our river for dinner followed by taking our guests round town for an evening of visiting pubs that have live music on. I fancy a large glass of red wine!

Having snoozed, then rushed about with duster, hoover etc, I'm now waiting while a STEAK marinates for supper, to be joined by mushrooms and what David called "potatoes Orcadiensis", i.e. boiled in their skins and served with indecent quantities of BUTTER.
I'm just home after taking our guests on a bit of a pub crawl. Husband and I opted out after the third pub to leave our town clerk taking our guests on to a fourth pub.
I'm off to bed feeling rather drunk.
Very windy around these parts yesterday and today, so much so that one of our water butts was blown off its stand.
Mr RoS uses that one to tip in the water that otherwise runs down the plughole when we are waiting for it to run hot or cold enough for what we need, but has been taking more out to water the veg than he had been putting in. so it hadn't enough weight to hold it against the wind.
Unfortunately it doesn't collect rainwater, of which we've had plenty today.
It has also been decidedly chilly (well we were, having not yet taken to winter clothing). I had to do a quick change of menu for lunch, shelving the salad/sandwich option and searching out a tin of pea & ham soup, which I boosted with half a tin of mushy peas to stretch it to two of us, and spiced up with a spoonful of mustard.
Dinner was a (planned) cauliflower & chickpea curry with rice.

There are several other points around the house where we could have them and if we're in for more summers like this one we clearly need all we can manage to add.
We also had a united service at Our Place this morning - apparently when there are five Sundays in the month there's a Benefice Eucharist on the fifth at one of the churches and this month it was our turn. A lot of our regulars were away (it being bank holiday weekend and all) and the people who were there from other churches disappeared pretty smartish so there was little opportunity to chat afterwards, which was a shame.
Regarding weather, this "August Bank" often seems to be a wet one. The town where I grew up used to have a carnival on this weekend and I remember more occasions of wet weather than anything else. Also, in that very hot dry Summer of '76, the weather broke at the bank holiday weekend. Some friends of ours got married that weekend, in the pouring rain.

It was supposed to be mostly wet today but is actually dry and rather pleasant.
My neighbour has just been round as the downpipe from my roof next to his garage has moved from its fixture and water is getting into his garage. I offered to get the company back to fix it but he has offered to sort it. Lovely to have such good neighbours.
This morning we skived off church. There was a guest speaker whom we do not appreciate. Ahem.
Instead we went to the exhibition of a Belgian artist who works in the medium of... Lego. It was excellent - some enormous very detailed creations, reproductions of famous artworks (Lego bricks used as mosaic to recreate the Mona Lisa and Rubens' Adoration of the Magi for example) and life size Lego busts of the heads of famous people like Michael Jackson and Elton John. Well worth a visit.
It ended in Captain Pyjamas heaven - a play area with more than one million Lego bricks.
That sounds like a great exhibition to visit @la vie en rouge. How did you manage to get the Captain to leave?
I was feeling slightly fragile after last night's pub crawl and amazed our Town Clerk and Ukrainian guests made it for the breakfast in the Town Hall this morning as they ended the night in a local night club. We have a festival of local artists in our Market Square today and tomorrow and after the breakfast a couple of us went and had a bit of a dance to one of our amazing Town Hall casual members of staff, who, when there was a gap in the programme, went and sang a few songs at short notice. He's doing a musical theatre degree and I predict he'll go far.
I was feeling so tired after that I went home to bed for a couple of hours. I am NOT having any alcohol at the pub dinner we're going to tonight.

Also, in that very hot dry Summer of '76, the weather broke at the bank holiday weekend. Some friends of ours got married that weekend, in the pouring rain.

My neighbour has just been round as the downpipe from my roof next to his garage has moved from its fixture and water is getting into his garage. I offered to get the company back to fix it but he has offered to sort it. Lovely to have such good neighbours.
Instead we went to the exhibition of a Belgian artist who works in the medium of... Lego. It was excellent - some enormous very detailed creations, reproductions of famous artworks (Lego bricks used as mosaic to recreate the Mona Lisa and Rubens' Adoration of the Magi for example) and life size Lego busts of the heads of famous people like Michael Jackson and Elton John. Well worth a visit.
It ended in Captain Pyjamas heaven - a play area with more than one million Lego bricks.
I was feeling slightly fragile after last night's pub crawl and amazed our Town Clerk and Ukrainian guests made it for the breakfast in the Town Hall this morning as they ended the night in a local night club. We have a festival of local artists in our Market Square today and tomorrow and after the breakfast a couple of us went and had a bit of a dance to one of our amazing Town Hall casual members of staff, who, when there was a gap in the programme, went and sang a few songs at short notice. He's doing a musical theatre degree and I predict he'll go far.
I was feeling so tired after that I went home to bed for a couple of hours. I am NOT having any alcohol at the pub dinner we're going to tonight.
