  • I was reminded to hope and pray for @Bishops Finger while getting ready for bed at about 2am. While getting my trousers off, without much care, I lost balance, fell forward onto the bed and SMACKED my shin on the metal bed frame!
Leg immediately swelled up, no particular pain as adrenaline kicked in, but because blood thinners, put clothes on off to our local Minor Injury Unit, fortunately just a mile away.
Once in, Mrs Sioni entered my details on the automated triage terminal and the human triage nurse called me in about five minutes, brief chat and she said go and wait, we’ll call you and a radiologist called me about five minutes on. He was very thorough: took X-Ray shots from above, both sides, angles in between and a bit lower down the leg. Sent away to await the doctor.
Doctor checked a few things, swelling is now coming down but pain is increasing! Still, there is no break or bone damage, just a lot of swelling! Go home, it’ll take about six weeks to go down and the bruising to go, take painkillers of choice and all this in two hours.
Thanks be to God and local hero Nye Bevan.
  • Who knows? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Hope you are feeling not too stiff today @Bishops Finger .
I'd love to go and see the Pope @la vie en rouge , yes I'm a Catholic, but he seems one of the few sensible world leaders we have, so I think I'd have gone if I could even if I was still a Quaker.
I had a couple of meetings this morning. One was with a new gallery owner who was showing us pictures of his first exhibition. Our museum curator was there and she was brilliant at suggestions as basically he was hoping the council would help fund it, but we don't have the money to do that. I then headed to the library where I had a brief but useful meeting with the library manager. Then home for soup, I am very much thinking that now it is time for a nap.
  • Sorry to hear of your Mishap @sionisais , but it's good to learn that the NHS working as it should! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I'm still feeling a bit stiff and achy after yesterday's Tess Coe Tumble, but not as much as I feared. No Paint Ing this afternoon, though - just more Restage, after lunch..

Gosh, that was quick of them ... and I hate that automated triage check-in!

Hope you're feeling OK today, that could have been nasty.

I went to see Pope John Paul II from college - what I chiefly remember is sitting in the dark in a field (we got there incredibly early!) and learning the Hail, Mary on the coach since I was pretending to be a Catholic and I'd never done it before! The Pope himself was a distant white spot on the stage, but it was quite fun.
  • I was part of the immense crowd in London's Victoria Street when HH John Paul II was visiting London in 1982 (IIRC), and could just about see him when he came out of Westminster Cathedral to give us a blessing...

At the time, I was wearing my Solidarność (Solidarity) badge in support of the brave people opposing Communist rule in Poland.
  • I hope you @Bishops Finger and @sionisais make a good recovery.

I have had a busy week, with my usual choirs and various extras. I’ve been asked to help out another choir who have an occasional Evensong. The next one features music from a local composer, including a first performance, so not available on Youtube. I went to their practice last night but will have to do some work on my own, in addition to my own choir pieces.

Today my son came and did some gardening. One of his consultancy jobs is being cut back but he has other things in the offing and needs to keep networking. His wife’s work situation has also become uncertain but he is optimistic on both scores.
My daughter went back to hospital for follow up on her finger which is still infected. She was seen promptly and sent for X-ray, but after waiting an hour and a half she left. Being a holiday let owner she had work awaiting.

This afternoon I went to a one-off fundraising event, a team quiz identifying the purpose of various small objects from the past. I knew some, guessed others. It was most interesting. We were joined by a lady aged 92 in a wheelchair, brought by her carers. She said it was the first time she had been out for over a year. She was a mine of information, not just about the objects but about our town which she has lived in for 80 years. To my delight she recalled the newsagents and the hairdressers which distant relatives of mine ran back in the 1930-50ies, long since demolished and turned into a car park.

Tomorrow a group of us from church are going to the wedding service of our young Director of Music. He is getting married in the prestigious city centre church where he has an organ scholarship, so there will be good music.
I suspect he will not be with us very much longer.
  • I’ve been off line for a few days as my iPad died. I now have a new iPad and I’m trying to get the hang of it.

Sending best wishes for speedy recovery to those suffering from Bumps and Tumbles.
Intermittently sunny and pleasantly warm here today: a nice Autumn day. Work not too busy.

    F&C for supper, because Friday.

Memo to self: get eggs and electricity tomorrow.
  • Thanks @Piglet - those of us who have been Bumping and Tumbling seem to have escaped relatively unscathed (I hope the painkillers are proving effective @sionisais ).

Our Guardian Angels may well have been working overtime, but I'll certainly be more careful with my Trolley next time I go to Tess Coe.

His Holiness was running seriously late on his programme, but we were eventually rewarded with a close up view of the Popemobile for ten seconds or so. He had a lovely smile.

I have now seen the Pope, the late Queen, and a President of the Republic (Chirac, back in the day).
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
Hope the swelling goes down quickly @sionisais and glad that you seem to have escaped lightly @Bishops Finger . The taking painkillers regularly today seems to have helped my hip be not quite so painful so I'm hopeful I'll be able to enjoy my walking holiday even if I'm a bit slower than usual. Annoyingly I seem to be developing a cold, but fingers crossed it won't get worse than it is at the moment. It isn't helping my already extremely dodgy hearing though.
  • On our recent visit to your fair shores, we saw the Popemobile JPII used in Liverpool which is now in the commercial vehicle museum at Leyland. It is surprisingly large!
  • Deleted

  • On the medical front the swelling has gone down but the bruising has come up a treat! One of my best ever.
No pain, unless I stand too long.

How many more do you need for a full house, I wonder?

  • How does two popes ( Paul VI & JP2) 1 king ( Savang Vatthana of Laos) one queen ( E11R), 1 president ( Kwame Nkrumah) &a gaggle of Prince Consorts, stray Princesses & a duchess or 3 measure up?

I saw the Queen at Windsor Castle, presenting a new set of colours to the Irish Guards (my dad had been a sergeant in the Irish Guards, which was why we were invited). During the ceremony, Concorde flew over on the way to Heathrow, and everyone stopped to watch it!
  • Yes, very silly of them to build the castle under Heathrow's flightpath!

ION, another pleasantly Sun-Shiny day in Arkland the Arcadian. Some Paint Ing has been done - there's still a few square metres of Deck to cover, so yet another tin of Paint will have to be ordered. My aim is to complete the work this Autumn - alas! tarring the Hull may have to wait until next Spring (if I live), though it really does look scruffy.

Preparations for The Winter Of Doom™ continue. A tonne of Coal has been ordered, and Neighbour F will deliver it on Tuesday. I've also bought a spare bottle of Gas, though it may not be required for the time being, as the Dragon (once well alight) provides me with Hot Water for the occasional wash - once a month, whether I need it or not...
    :scream:

Lunch is called for. Not sure what's in the Fridge, but I suspect it may be a FISH CAKE or two. With CHIPS n'MUSHY PEAS, of course.

My Royal/Important Personages tally, mostly due to singing in assorted cathedral choirs:

    HM Queen Elizabeth II
HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother
    HM King Olav of Norway
    HRH Prince Philip
    HRH The Princess Royal
    The former Duke of York
    HRH Prince Edward
Her Grace the Duchess of Gloucester (to whom David and I were presented when she visited St Magnus Cathedral the day after we got married)

No Popes, but several dozen Archbishops when the Primates' Conference was held in Belfast

President Clinton - the Cathedral choristers sang when he came to Belfast, and I was roped into helping keep them amused while we waited for him to arrive. All I really remember was that he was inordinately late

    John Major
Margaret Thatcher (who, annoyingly, dozed off during the anthem - unappreciative old trout)
Having a quiet, lazy day, and will toast David's memory with a glass of Malbec later (it's seven years today since he died). :heartbreak:

  • Today I attended the wedding service of our young Director of Music who is Organist at a city centre church. Beautiful music, see Ecclesiantics, followed by meal out with a friend at an Italian restaurant. Friend came back here for a cup of tea and we put the world of choirs and churches to rights.

All things being equal, HC at my own church followed by informal Harvest Festival service at another church in the group. Strangely, the four small churches are having Harvest services, but not mine, though I think that will probably be the focus of Pancakes and Praise this month or next.

Sending loving thoughts your way @Piglet .

Glad you are fairly ok @Bishops Finger and setting yourself up well for the Winter of Discontent. I've got a few extra tins of soup and vegetables in. Also, er... toilet rolls...

Hope the swelling goes down soon @sionisais and the hip holds up for your walking holiday @Sarasa .

I continue to ponder the Air Fryer question. I would always cook a joint of meat in my slow cooker so not sure I'd even need a two-drawer fryer, let alone a rotisserie.

It's been a sunny day here in the Wilds of Wiltshire, which is not really good news as we so need rain and lots of it. Now that it's cooler I'm enjoying being able to get into the garden, though; mostly weeding and trimming. We're considering raised beds along the fence at the bottom of the garden, now that it's been fixed, as the soil is such very poor quality.

Mr Nen has been away overnight, back later this evening, so I have watched Strictly in between doing a few domestics. I think I missed the best dance of the night so will try and catch up on that somehow.
  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
We love our raised beds @nenya, and hope to have some more next year. It's so easy to grow stuff in them. My hip has been much better since I've been taking painkillers regularly. I managed to go for quite a long mooch round town this morning that included visiting one art exhibition and buying a print at a friend's art shop. I also got some euros for our holiday as all the hotels seem to want the tourist tax paid in cash.
Today's problem is that this cold has caused me to lose my voice. I don't feel particularly ill, but it could be tricky tomorrow as I'm supposed to be doing the reading at a memorial service in our cemetery tomorrow afternoon. If it isn't better tomorrow morning I'll have to contact a couple of people to come up with a plan b.
  • We had a day out with Younger Son & family today. Haven't seen them since May, so it was a delight to have a day out with them at Middle Farm (E Sussex), about 1/2 hrs drive from us.

Was underwhelmed by how few animals were to be seen, and the amount walking to get round their enclosures. Of course, the little boys were determined to see them all.

However the farm shop was well worth a visit, and DiL and I had a very pleasant time browsing & buying. We are both particularly fond of condiments, so various pickles and sauces found its way into our baskets. Came home absolutely shattered and unable to move for the rest of the day.
Am currently avoiding having an early bedtime, as that only means I will wake up too early tomorrow.

Had been on the piss out last night for a few ales and a chilli at the King Billy in Nottingham. Very much my sort of place. This afternoon I attended to one of our dining chairs which had become increasingly rickety to the point of collapse and redrilled all the dowel holes and fitted oversize dowels and I'm pleased to note it's now our least rickety dining chair.
  • Hugs to Piglet.

Mr Heavenly needs to service our dining chairs, I live in fear that one will collapse when a guest sits on it. I did try to convince him to buy a (nearly) new set from the British Heart Foundation furniture store but he wasn’t having it.

I was called for my flu jag today, so of course it was absolutely chucking rain. However, with the deployment of a raincoat and umbrella I got there and back without drowning (the health centre isn't quite as far away as I think it is). No ill effects so far.

Laundry is birling in the tumble dryer; I don't think I've ever had to put on boots and a raincoat to go the 50-odd steps from my flat to the laundry before! An ark might have been the desired mode of transport ... ☔

Had brunch of poached eggs, smoked salmon and avocado on TOAST: there can be few combinations more divine, when the eggs are done just right and the avocado at the correct stage of ripeness. 😋
  • I must beg to disagree as I heartily dislike both poached eggs and avocado. Smoked salmon, on the other hand ...

Interesting. I'm becoming more and more keen on the idea of raised beds and we have asked for a quotation for doing them from the Helpful Fence-Fixing Person.

I hope your voice holds out for your reading.

There being no service at Our Place this morning we travelled to Eight-Miles-Away-Town to a church we've been to once before and it was the most lovely service of Sung Eucharist. Two friends of ours also went and we had a really nice coffee and conversation with them afterwards.

It's been several weeks since we've been in together on a Sunday to enjoy our Sunday evening and no work tomorrow meal but this will be happening later; to this end, there's a bottle of white WINE in the fridge.

We have Grey Skies and Actual Rain :flushed: .

I'm with @Baptist Trainfan on the poached eggs and avocado although I'm more "I'd rather not" than "Yuck, no thanks." But smoked salmon and scrambled egg is one of my favourite breakfast treats.

ETA - I also meant to say before now that I'm someone else who really appreciates @North East Quine 's Tales of Life in the North East Household.

I like poached eggs (though would prefer a fried egg with a crispy, lacy edge to it) but hate avocado - my most un-Millennial trait I think. I hate anything with that kind of mushy texture.
  • PomonaPomona Shipmate
Wrt poached eggs - I think I like eggs poached in something (eg shakshuka) more than a 'standalone' poached egg if that makes sense. Unless it's eggs benedict, in which case the hollandaise is the main attraction anyway.

I'm pleased to report that when I went back to collect my dry laundry, it had stopped raining.

If it continues not raining until supper time, I think a Chinese takeaway might be in order: although I'm not feeling any ill effects from the jag apart from a slight ache at the site, I am feeling a bit lethargic*.

    * "no change there", I hear you say ...

We didn't get rained on for the service and the RAF Chaplin was excellent at fitting the reading to the theme of the service, something that I and my deputy who I asked to do the reading as my voice still isn't great had puzzled over. My husband is still convinced the Church of England is obsessed by sheep though.
We're now wandering round the house thinking of things we need to pack for our holiday.
  • A Cloudy day in Arkland the Threatened, with Rain forecast...

I was hoping to do a bit more Paint Ing this afternoon, but it seems prudent to wait for more dry weather - later this week, They say. Never mind - I'm improving the Shining Hour by tidying up my Sideboard, whose three drawers are getting a bit jumble-sale-y.

BANGERS n'MASH with ONION GRAVY for Lunch, because use-by date. Expotition to Tess Coe tomorrow (if I live), as I seem to be getting a bit low on ready-meals or easy-to-cool Stuff. More Polish dumplings (pierogi) are on my mental list, as they come in a pack which will suffice for two meals. I might try frying some Mushrooms with them.

After an extremely dark and wet morning, the day has cleared and there's a bright band of sunlight on the roofs of the houses opposite. I hope it stays dry tomorrow as I will have to trail into town to the audiologist- one of my aids is on the blink. Bummer, as I was intending to cook ahead for visitors on Tuesday. Still, I expect I can get the roasted tomato soup done.

Yesterday was a conventional dinner of roast pork and vegetables, of which the best element imo was the apple sauce made with Irish Pippins from the garden. Tonight will be the spicy grilled swordfish.
  • I went to my usual church at 9.15 for Holy Communion. Only three choir, no organist, so CDs accompaniment. Then a quick cuppa and on to another church in the group for their Harvest. All the preparation had been done by one person, a friend, so I went to support her.
The service was lay led, fronted by the squire of the manor (the patron) with contributions from others including small children, whose task was to bring up various items representing things for which we need to be thankful. One little boy refused to give up his loaf of bread! This church is not normally well supported, but today’s congregation exceeded the numbers at My Place, which is the largest in the group, thanks to the cunning plan of giving various people things to read or do. My friend had also booked lunch afterwards for her extended family, though the men did not attend the service.

I had a lazy afternoon, though my daughter popped in for half an hour on her way to wild swimming ( at a supervised site). I shivered at the thought, though she assured me it is warmer outside than in.
