Why not? Anything involving a head of state and sex must surely attract attention...
But even before the war, interest in the Epstein Files tended to ebb and flow, getting most attention after each document dump and subsequent naming, before flickering out.
If anyone interested in or concerned about American politics hasn't seen this week's highlights of Jack Smith's amazing testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, check them out.
What's more amazing is the name-calling engaged in by Repugnican senators who can't even get their facts straight. What would it take to get a Repugnican to say, "Yes, it appears that he did commit some serious crimes, and we can only blame ourselves for not holding him accountable when we had the chance to do so"?
Mr. Smith said under oath that his investigation into the 2020 election and aftermath clearly showed beyond reasonable doubt that Tr*mp committed real and heinous crimes against the country, and that two separate Grand Juries agreed. Republicans just lower their eyes, or shrug, or stammer to redirect and attack him (Smith) personally.
It was painfully obvious that the entire Republican/MAGA machine thought they had Jack Smith dead to rights on perjury and collusion, using a NBA basketball game and his staffers' texts as evidence, but it backfired. Spectacularly.

What intrigues me about this is that I've operated under the assumption that pretty much all congressional Republicans know who and what Trump is and that he's guilty as sin, so must know that they haven't got shit on Smith. Yet they seemed genuinely flumoxed when their play fell apart. Have they really huffed their own farts so much they think Trump's innocent?

I suspect this is playing in tandem with recent warnings from some Republicans that "If the Democrats win in November, they'll put Trump in prison!"
The specific wording I recall now actually used the phrase "...put Trump in prison" as its finale, which is a risky construction, 'cuz it prompts Democrats and pissed-off swing voters to reply with something like "Sounds good to me!". But it's presumably aimed at the MAGA faithful, as a dystopian prediction about what'll happen to their hero if they don't turn out to vote.

They still know Trump is guilty; at least most of them do, I suspect. I think it’s more that they thought they had found something they could use to discredit Smith, which would have allowed them to say “See, Smith is dishonest and Trump is being treated unfairly.”
The play that fell apart is the play that would have enabled their smokescreen.

Yes, I can see that the mid-term elections are Trump's biggest worry at the moment.

Good point, well made. It's not their own farts they're huffing.
