Essential coursework - Tangents, and how to ride 'em.

(As seen on a CS minute: 'He seems to have gone off on a tandem')
  • It got me going - ordered some Draytons' red, delivered next week. Shows JuanaCruz the great value of the Ship.
  • Is there a Foundation Course that reveals where the emoticons are located, or are you expected to learn that in the Student Union bar?
  • It will include when to use the serial killer emoticon and why there should be a candle emoticon ans isn't.

It’s learned in the bar - and some of the professors frown frostily on their use.

    🤨

  • I feel there should be a module or so in "What to do when..." Including "What to do when called to hell" (options - admit you are wrong, or argue your case more fervently. Or rule out the opinion of the OP who clearly understands less than you); "What to do when admonished by a host" (Apologise and grovel and never repeat); What to do when admonished by an admin (As abovebut even more objectly, with promised of gin offerings).

    ABjectly, surely?
  • There also be a lesson in "forgiving other peoples typos, because they are probably having a shit day"

I have resolved to (try to) freely forgive typos because I make so many. In my defence it is my own that annoy me most. Maybe I need to talk to my personal tutor?

@Gee D I *will* start or resurrect a wine thread if only to continue discussions and avoid clogging up this thread with important WINE matters like HV classics, Henty riesling.

I admit just renewed my long-lapsed Wine Searcher Pro subscription too after this

  • What I'd really like is a module called "Whatever happened to..." which covered all the past heros and villains of the Ship.

And, of course, a whole term would be spent on ‘Who was Erin?’ :notworthy:

Speaking of :notworthy: - a course on the code for the old Ship’s emojis would be essential too.

cancel Why you can't change your mind on posting.

  • I am not sure it has been mentioned* but (maybe a foundation course) on discussion and debate. "Why simply stating your position does not mean you are right. Even if it is 'obvious'".

*Also "Reading the other comments before posting your own".
  • (I don't think this has been mentioned yet...)

"Discuss in no less than 5,000 words the benefits of using the "preview" feature BEFORE posting your comment."

It must be Apple-specific then: it's one of the emojis on my iPad keypad. I've seen other posters use it, so presumably they are using the same source, or one Apple OS will consent to read.

Cross-platform compatibility issues - how much I don't miss them!

Hmm. The candle is a Unicode symbol (introduced in Unicode 7.0 AIUI) U+1F56F which many systems will render. I just can’t remember how to type it into BBCode, or whether I need to do it some other way.

Are they different emojis? Both look the same on iOS devices.

No they’re both the same emoji. The first code is Decimal, and the second code is (indicated by the ‘x’) the same number in Hexadecimal notation.

Ah, thanks. I guess I could have waited to check on a non-Apple device. I’ve noticed that on a PC, I will see a candle emoji that resembles a true votive candle, but when I look the same post on my iPhone or iPad, the emoji looks more like something Jack might have jumped over.

  • BroJamesBroJames Purgatory Host
Yes. There is a range of candle images.

This is decidedly post graduate learning. 🙃

  • If indeed we are looking at post-graduate learning, we should be introducing modules such as "Moderating peace talks within the flower guild".
  • I think MA at least for "how to assist the hosts without junior hosting"

One is reminded of the old quip about how one defends a tiger: you open the cage door and get out of the way.

(hosts not being in cages it's even easier here!)

Good heavens, Mousethief - you're not suggesting that the Hosts are fierce, are you?
  • Well I certainly wouldn't want to argue with a grumpy Valkyrie!
  • Fierce is perhaps to hard a term. Kitten like is perhaps closer. Kittens have claws.
I have very rarely been corrected by an admin. They seem a nice bunch.
How about How many names does BroJames have for Donald Trump or Boris Johnson? Lots of points available.

Touched though I am to be thus mentioned I should point out that anyone who gets a near-to-right answer will rapidly be processed into ready-to-eat meals for said kittens.

Any truly non-edible parts can be prepared for their litter trays.

Some things you truly don’t want to know!

Group activities are called meets and usually occur at pubs.

Or ice cream parlors. (Thinking of the first SF meet, aeons ago, part of which was spent at Ghirardelli's ice cream place. The ice cream somehow gave us flashbacks for some time afterwards. Like weeks.)
  • Or just restaurants in the States, where the British "pub" concept doesn't have much of a toehold. Which is a pity.

I would really, really, very really like to have our emoticons from the Vintage Ship again.

    Hint, hint.

Not all of us enjoy pubs, though the main deterrent for me used to be the smoky atmosphere which is happily a thing of the past. But good socialising in a restaurant is problematic if there are more than about half-a-dozen people.

Choosing a Meet Location should be an elective.

Offering Accommodation to a Travelling Shipmate might possibly be postgraduate level.

Which is why we need another Zoom meet soon!

I've never done a Shipmeet. Combination of my (surprising) introversion and not haivng had one in a location that worked for me.

I could probably manage a Zoom one though...

Different software, they were all gifs that do not work on Vanilla. There are smilies that work, I listed them out here (link) and here (link). Best I can do is  and :star:
  • @alienfromzog and @Gill H - do we want to set up another Zoom meet?
