Or just restaurants in the States, where the British "pub" concept doesn't have much of a toehold. Which is a pity.
Not all of us enjoy pubs, though the main deterrent for me used to be the smoky atmosphere which is happily a thing of the past. But good socialising in a restaurant is problematic if there are more than about half-a-dozen people.
Good socializing anywhere is problematic when the group gets too large. Or rather you get good socializing in your immediate vicinity and none at all with others, unless you play musical chairs.
